Weekly Bulletin of the

Rotary Club of St. Catharines South

June 2, 2008

Call to Order : President Elect Greg MacDonald

Anthem : Kris Akili

Toast:   Ron Kozub

Grace:  Matt Taylor

Guests and Visiting Rotarians:   We  welcomed  Mike Simpson, former club member and current Principal of Sir Winston Churchill, Linda Baiano, member and current Principal of West Park Secondary and Tony Bozza, Principal of Denis Morris Catholic High School and their six Rotary Medalists named later. We also had with us several members of the Rotary Club of St. Catharines, the eminent Dr. Don Fraser, Henry Becker, Past District Governor Art Wing and Larry Igulden. Our second group of special guests were the Group Study Exchange Team from Bulgaria consisting of Dragomir Lazarov and Panauot Nikolov both from the Rotary Club of Sofia City, Yana Dikanska, Kataya Kovacheva, Stoyanka Dimova and Svilen Kisiov.

Sergeant-At-Arms: George Fitzpatrick once again outdid himself at collecting dollars from our members and even some of our special guests as Mike Simpson and Linda Baiano were generous in being with us today with their top students. Guest Don Fraser also donated as did many of our own members but the highlight was Ron Kozub parting with serious cash in announcing the medal haul that he took home from the largest amateur wine making contest on the continent. Sounds like some great product coming from Ron's Wine Garden of Pelham. Congratulations to Ron!

Rotary Medals

Committee Chair John D'Ambrosio started the program by welcoming the representatives from three of our sponsored schools and by thanking their principals for accompanying them tpo our meeting. John explained that the tradition is that the two medallists from a school would come up together and introduce their opposite to the audience present in terms of why that person was deserving of a Rotary Medal Award. He then invited the six candidates to come forward one school at a time.

The recipients were as follows:

Dennis Morris Catholic High School       Casey Gazzelone and Caleb Scott

West Park Secondary School                Katelyn Fenwick and Patrick Moldowan

Sir Winston Churchill                            Laura Hughes and Peter Doherty

Thorold Secondary School                     Sania Mian and Cameron Davidson

The students did a marvelous job in letting us know how involved their opposites are in school activities and how well they exemplify the Rotary Motto "Service Above Self. . As always it is so reassuring and inspiring to hear how talented and community minded these young adults are.

Group Study Exchange

The theme for the exchange this year for the visiting group from Bulgaria was appropriate to Niagara as it focused on both Tourism and Wine. We were enlightened to hear the similarities in economies between our two regions as we heard several presentations as to their backgrounds and professions. Dragomir was especially skilled in his language skills, his sense of humour and political correctness as he was tested by some of our members questions. Matt Taylor was contributing as host to one of the team for the week's stay in our area. Art Wing who has relatives in Bulgaria was instrumental in bringing the GSE group from Bulgaria to our district.
