The Rotary Club of St. Catharines South announces the 2008 recipient of the Howard Etherington Award

The Howard Etherington Memorial Award, (including $2,000 donation), was established in 1991-1992 in honour Howard Etherington, a chartered member who was most dedicated to solidifying the Rotary Club of St. Catharines South as a rock solid community service organization in the city of St. Catharines. At the time he was a practicing pharmacist, committed family man, a WW2 veteran and he embraced the principles of Rotary with sincere enthusiasm and served as club president in 1976-77. His many initiatives generated substantial funds that allowed the club membership to disburse monies to numerous worthwhile causes in our community as well as allowing the club to contribute significantly to world community service. He died of Alzheimer's in 1991. He is dearly remembered for his unyielding support of the clubs initiatives and was often heard saying. "If it's OK with the directors - it's OK with me".

This year's recipient of the award is the Folk Arts Council and Multicultural centre of St. Catharines to facilitate the operation of two newcomers multicultural youth summer camps, one for 6-11 year olds and one for12-18 year olds. "It is extremely important for the children and youth from newcomer families to successfully adapt to the Canadian culture milieu," said Rick Rochon Executive Director for the multicultural centre. The funds will be directed to help pay camp counselors, program materials, snacks and field trips.
