Our deepest condolences to the family of
PDG Dato Balwant Singh for the demise
of their beloved patriach.

Details of the funeral ceremonies as follows:
Wake will be held at No 2 Jalan 5/31 Petaling
Jaya from 7 pm Friday 3 Feb till Sunday
5 Feb 2017. Cortège leaves at 12 pm Sunday
5 Feb to GUI YUAN crematorium Kampong
Tunku, Petaling Jaya.

PDG Dr Paul Lee knows him well. And this is what he has to say about the man:

"Allow me to share some thoughts on our late PDG Dato’ Balwant Singh.
I was the Club President of RC Pudu when our late PDG Dato’ Balwant Singh was our District Governor in 1984/85. The then RI President was Carlos Conseco from Mexico and the Rotary International theme was “Discover a New World of Service”. Amongst our batch of Club Presidents included Beh Lye Huat (PDG Dato Beh) from RC KL, Sen Gupta from Gombak, Kok Wee Kiat (Dato) From RC PJ, Singarajah from Klang etc. At then, there were only 5 clubs in the Klang Valley!
Dato was elected District Governor by the Rotary club of Seremban. Thus he was the first Governor from Seremban. He later resigned from RC Seremban and joined RC Bangsar.
His District Secretary was the ever efficient Maurice D’cruz from RC Port Dickson.
Governor Dato’ Balwant was a simple man who exude great leadership of love and compassion for the less fortunate. Under his leadership, the clubs carried out many humanitarian services.
As stated by PDG Les, we had our District Assembly at Kuantan and the District Conference at the MUI Ming Court Hotel at Port Dickson.
A true Rotarian who has lived the life true to his calling. We will always remember him."

The late PDG Dato Balwant Singh is an Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Bangsar.

This year is the Year of the Rooster. We are advised to wear purple, as the Chinese believed that purple will appease the god Tai Sui. The rooster as we all know is a proud bird, very productive and looks after his brood of hens well. So don't offend Tai Sui.

PP Gary Lim will have his Open House on the first day of CNY at his house in Bandar Damansara from 6:30 pm onwards. Likewise, President Sandy Soh will hold her Open House on Sunday 5 Feb at her house in Rawang also from 6:30 pm onwards.

So guys, go purple.

On 9th December, our sister clubs - RCs Hong Kong Harbour, Mandaluyong (Philippines), Singapore West, Songkhla and Dhonburi (both in Thailand) - came in full force; 70 of them in total.  Our Logistics guys under PP Gary Lim did a wonderful job of meeting them at the airports - both KLIA and KLIA2 - take them to lunch and ferry them to VE Hotel in Bangsar South.  And in the evening they were ferried to the Unique Ballroom in Petaling Jaya for the Fellowship Dinner themed "Superheroes." All of us had to wear a Superhero T-shirt of some description while others did the whole works.

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year, everybody.  Pudu had a good 2016 and hopefully it'll be just as good in 2017.  We delivered better financial assistance and incentives to our scholars at all levels from secondary schoolers to undergraduates; and with effect from this year to post graduates. And we continued to work comfortably with with our partners-in-service namely St John Ambulance, Sungei Wang and Autorr Foundation together with our supporters the Interactors and Rotaractors.

We had a good AGM tonight to approve both the accounts for RY 2015-16. There were 21 who came to the Unique Seafood restaurant for the meeting which started just after 7:00 pm. Even members who said they were not coming, came.  Well done, it shows that you do care for the Club's future.

The BoD line up for RY 2017-18 under Jeffery Yap was also announced.  The core members are: Jeffery Yap as President, CT Heng as PE, Patrick Lee as VP, Mohan Raj as Hon Secretary, Laura Lee as Hon Treasurer and Sandy Soh as IPP.  The Directors line up are still fluid.

On the night of the 10th December, 2016 we had the Gala Dinner to commemorate the 50th Anniversary celebration.  Our sister clubs from Hong Kong Harbour, Mandaluyong (Philippines), Singapore West, Songkhla and Dhonburi (both in Thailand) came in good numbers -- 70 of them.  Our District 3300 clubs were also well represented. In all we had 59 tables which meant that we had almost 600 people at the dinner. Our Guest of Honour was PRIP Bitchai Rattakul, who was also our PDG when we were in District 330 of the 1960's, 70's and 80's. He is a nonagenarian and reminisced about the good old days.

We have our own nonagenarian as well, and that is Tan Sri Soong Siew Hoong, who turned 92 on 9 Dec 2016.  We honoured him with a birthday cake-cutting ceremony for both him and the Club.

And in honour of him being the Charter member still active with the Club, a Bursary was named after him.  Thus the Soong Bursary was funded with RM 10,000 by the PRCCF (Pudu Rotary Club Charity Foundation) for a post-graduate student researching in Agricultural Science. Why Agricultural Science? Because the Tan Sri loves farming and is promoting Urban Farming in a big way.

The winner of the Soong Bursary is a lovely lady by the name of Nor Ilya bt Mohd Zaki, a Masters student in Agricultural Science from the UPM (Universiti Putra Malaysia)

L to R: PP Kumar Tharmalingam (OC Gala Dinner) Tan Sri Soong Siew Hoong (Charter member) Sandy Soh (President RY 2016-17) Cik Nor Ilya bt Mohd Zaki (recipient Soong Bursary 2016) and PP Dato Muslim (OC Scholarships and Bursary awards 2016)

The Guest of Honour was HE Mr Constantin Nistor, Ambassador of Romania (who is also our Honorary Rotarian.) 165 students from six schools represented by their principals or teacher/Rotarian advisors accepted the cheques worth RM 58,050. Three undergraduates from UMP (Universiti Malaysia Pahang) got RM 1,500 each with eligibility to claim for two more years at RM 1,500 per year subject to improved CGPA and good semester reports.
The highlight of this event was the award for the Fraser & Neave bursary worth RM 5,000 to a post graduate student student, Cik Amanina Amani who is doing her Masters programme research in Food Engineering at the UPM (Universiti Putra Malaysia.) This is a new RM 50,000 bursary award programme for post graduates (Masters or PhD) introduced this year for the next 10 years.

Today, I attended the graduation ceremony of No 18 intake of under-privileged girls that were accepted by the Vocational Training Opportunity Centre (VTOC) a training centre of the YWCA since 4 January 2016.  President Sandy Soh, PDG Dr Paul Lee and Rtn Laura Lee the then OC Vocational Training were there too. The Guest of Honour was Tengku Natashah, the daughter of the Sultan of Selangor.

What astonished me was the confidence, elegance and poise these girls have mastered when just less than one year ago they were timid, shy, not communicative and generally miserable looking. VTOC have done wonders in transforming these girls most of whom came from not so well to do families with not much hope for the future. It is certainly different now.  They have been trained in the vocation of their choice be it cookery, tailoring, secretarial, hairdressing and beauty care or early childhood education.  RC Pudu placed 50 girls sourced from all over the country and we are pleased to note that none of them fell by the way side. It is indeed a pleasure to be able to make a difference in their lives.
Well done girls. We are proud of you. And well done the committee under Rtn Laura Lee who painstakingly sourced and brought together these girls to the VTOC, an opportunity centre, for them to seize the opportunity.

Today, Tuesday 15 Nov 2016 the tri-partite committee of RC Pudu, ERA and
Autorr are pleased to bring into reality our show farm on Urban Farming.
This endeavour is to encourage the senior citizens to indulge in something
useful, beneficial and absorbing hobby in organic and hydroponic farming.
For urban dwellers living in small houses, flats or condos we have some
suggestions for them.  Experts in the field will be made available to help with
the "showhow of knowhow." Some 40 people came to the launch and
a whatsapp group has been created so that we can keep in touch.
Ideas and thoughts are being fermented to further enhance this effort.
And one of them is the Rotarian Action Group.

This MoU brings back F&N into prominence with RC Pudu. It was
Douglas Fraser, the GM of F&N in Kuala Lumpur who was the
founder President of this Club which was chartered on 5 Dec 1966,
some 50 years ago.  Our Tan Sri Soong, the only founder member
still active with the Club recalled with fondness how Doug Fraser
recruited him. And today 14 Nov 2016, F&N signed an MoU with us
to create a Bursary where annually, a Masters or PhD student
would be granted a bursary of RM 5,000 to help him/her through
with research in Food Technology that could eventually be commercialised.

for the next five months or so because Shangri La is undergoing a major
renovation and the function rooms are not available.

We had our first formal committee meeting today, attended by just four members, three of them our new members.  Nevertheless, we managed to discuss reasonably thoroughly the various aspects of the exhibition, thanks to PP Michael Tung's experience in running a big event - the Rotary Family Open Day (RFOD) - last year.  This is going to be a big event too with the launching of five other events piggy-backing on it.  And it's over a five day period from 6th to 10th December, 2016.  A committee of 30 members has been identified and hopefully the 2nd meeting on 15 Sep 2016 will see a bigger membership attending.

Monday 27 Jun 2016 was the last meeting of the Rotary Year 2015-16, that I presided. It has become the "tradition" that the President would do his thank you and present his Board and Board appointees with a memento. I chose to present every member a photobook of events during the year being what I think would be of real value if they care to look it up in later years. Even the AG, who is not a member of the Club, got one.

I also announced the recipient of the 5-Avenues of Service citation to PP Michael Tung and the special award of the "Extra Mile" plaque to our 90 year old Charter Member PP Tan Sri Soong Siew Hoong. Both of them will receive their awards on the Installation night 16 July 2016.

Likewise our sole Rotaract club also won the citation.

I went to the MBS Interact Club's IU Day today at the HGH Convention Centre in Sentul. From Pudu, there were five of us -- PE Sandy Soh, PP Gary Lim, PP Michael Yeow, Rtn Wong Shu Yi (the Interact Chairman 2016-17) and myself. The event started at 9:00 am and lasted until 1:30 pm.

It was really impressive indicating the ability of these boys to put up such a big show and having a big audience (800+ attendees from 27 schools) at a big convention centre. That's a display of good leadership, teamwork, talents, choreography and marketing skills. These boys really could think big and dream big.  They were, by the way, the recipient of the Best Interact Club Project award for RY 2015-16.  I hope they'll win again in RY 2016-17.

Our last event of the year was a smashing success.  It was the Employer-Employee Night on Monday 23 May 2016 when we honoured our members' employer or employees with an appreciation dinner. At the event we also gave away a Vocational Service award to an employer or employee in recognition of their services to Rotary. This year it was won by UPS.

The event was also made more interesting with a "get-to-know your Rotarian friends" fellowship. We made it into a joint meeting of Group 10 clubs (Bukit Bintang, Damansara, Titiwangsa and Tropicana) and next year's Group 12 clubs (Puchong Centennial, Kg Baru CC, Bukit Jalil and Gombak.)  Besides that we also wanted our Pudu members to know that they have daughter clubs (Ampang, Kajang, Cheras, Metro KL) and grand-daughter clubs (Bukit Bintang and Central Damansara.) And not forgetting, of course, our mother club (KL Diraja.) Almost all of the said clubs sent their reps and we had some 130 pax at the event including some very senior Rotarians. Our 90 year old Charter member, Tan Sri Soong, sent his regrets.

Our Speaker for the night, Rtn Sarkunan who is into Property, gave a talk to an audience that he never expected to be of that size (he had 4x the normal size at a Rotary talk.)

The Organising Chair, Michael Tung and his committee did a good job to make it a fun evening by adding in Raffle draws and games with attractive prizes.  Everyone enjoyed themselves. I was thus obliged to give them a rather expensive durian party!

At the District Conference, I took the opportunity to promote the setting up of the Rotarian Action Group (RAG) on Urban Farming.  Tan Sri Soong was helpful and asked Jay one of the Urban Farming Association stalwarts, to bring something to exhibit.  He did and the vertical wall of plants and vegetables on display caught the attention of quite a few Rotarians, in spite of our booth being at an obscure part of the area.  I had quite a few contact details which I'll follow up in the effort to initiate the RAG by District 3300.

PP Rizal Saadon of KL Diraja asked lots of questions

Last weekend 13/14 May 2016 we had the 81st District Conference acronymed Discon 81. Some 14 Pudu Rotarians attended among them a couple of new faces.  It was a great event and Pudu did pretty well under the new format of data driven District Awards.

Rtn Laura Lee receiving the Vocational Service award trophy

RI Director, Peter Offer, presented me the 100% EREY Club certificate

PAG Mohan Raj receiving the Polio Plus contribution certificate

MBSS Interactors receiving the trophy for Best Interact Project 2015-16

PESS is the Best Interact Club in the District 2015-16

Youth Service Management Award 2015-16 thanks to PP Gary Lim (Youth Director) and Angela Cheong (Interact Director)

We won two awards and three recognitions, namely the Vocational Service award for the Vocational Training of Under-Privileged Girls; the Youth Service Management of Interact clubs award; the TRF awards for being a 100% EREY Club and Polio Plus contributor (above USD 1,000) respectively. The Presidential Citation recognition is yet to arrive from RI. Two of our Interact clubs won the Best Interact Club award for 2015-16 (won by PESS - Pudu English Secondary (Girls) School) and the Best Interact Project award SCARS was won by the MBSS - Methodist Boys Secondary School.  For the Youth Service, this is the first time such awards were introduced to encourage the growth and vibrancy of the Interact and Rotaract clubs.

14 of us here, short of three to beat RC Melawati.

9th April – The 40th Interact Leadership Seminar was held at SMK (L) Methodist, KL with a total attendance of 181 persons, who consists of Interactors (113), teacher advisors (4), Rotaractors (4) and Rotarians (24).

The detailed breakdown of the Interactors as below:
Cheras – 6 pax
PESS – 23 pax
Kuen Cheng – 4 pax
MBS – 38 pax
VI – 13 pax
Dato Onn – 12 pax
Confucian – 8 pax
Sri Sentosa – 9 pax
Puchong Batu 14 – 10 pax

The event was successfully organized with the help of 24 Rotarians, who were from the Rotary Club of Pudu and Rotary Club of Puchong Centennial. We were honored to invite the Incoming District Governor Darul Abdullah as the Guest of Honor of our event. On top of that, the Incoming Assistant Governor Lim Poh Huu was also present as one of our guests.

The event was kicked off with the arrival of our Guest of Honor followed by the singing of the Patriotic and Interact songs. After which, Youth Service Director Rotarian Angela Cheong delivered a speech officiating the event. A second speech was given by Incoming President Sandy Soh. And finally, a few words by our Guest of Honor.

One of the highlights of the event was the “Leadership” motivational session led by our Rotarian Iswaran. He added a twist to his session by inviting 6 interactors from different schools on stage with an interactive ice breaker. However, it did not only bring laughter to the crowd, the nervous Interactors started to feel comfortable on stage while being in front of the crowd.

The Rotarians played very important roles in the event by conducting the Leadership Training workshops and leading the case study sessions with the Interactors. The objective of the workshops and case studies was to equip the Interactors to be future leaders and to enhance their social and leadership skills. During the workshops, the interactors were divided into their respective avenue of service for training.

Besides training, this was also the event where 16 awards were presented to the schools for their achievements of RY 2015-16. The winner of the Best Interact Club of RY 2015-16 is Pudu English Girl School (PESS), followed by 1st runner-up Methodish Boy School (MBS), KL.

The event ended successfully at 2:45 pm after taking the group photo by the respective schools' Interactors.

Despite living in the 21st century, the people of Sarawak interior do not have access to electricity, thus limiting their sources of light to candles, kerosene lamps, gas lamps or gen-sets. Although effective, it poses a hardship for them to perform basic activities such as cooking, eating and studying. Thus, solar lamps serve as the best option of lighting for the interior villages due to the unavailability of electricity, a basic necessity taken for granted in our towns and cities.

After consideration by the Board on how best to support this request, due to funding issues, the President finally decided to support the request on 6 Apr 2016. So yesterday, the cheque handover ceremony to Ms Aimee Liew was held in the presence of DG Siti Subaidah and AG Teoh KS.

District 9930 New Zealand has echoed my view (telepathy?) that our RY 2016-17 theme logo is too America-centric.  Hence they've designed an alternative one as shown above.  What do you think?  Please respond to the online survey that they have created on their website. Every year around this time (April) we'd be doing our ILTS (Interact Leadership Training Seminar.)  And it's always handled by the Incoming Youth Director and Interact Chairman.  This year it falls on Rtn Angela Cheong and Rtn Wong Shu Yi respectively. It was held at the MBS Kuala Lumpur and attended by Interactors from eight clubs under our sponsorship and also Interactors from RC Puchong Centennial; numbering about 100 including Resource Rotarians. It was successfully done with Rtn Shu Yi our youngest member at 25, showing great organizational and leadership skills.

We have had problems with our bank account when some people write cheques to us in the name of "Rotary Club of Pudu."  These cheques would not be accepted by the bank because our account is in the name of "Pudu Rotary Club." This is because when the Club was registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) back in 1966, we had it as Pudu Rotary Club.  And upon checking ROS recently as a result of them going digital and in Bahasa Melayu (the National Language) our Club name is noted as "Kelab Rotary Pudu" and when translated it became "Rotary Club of Pudu." A genuine mistake, but never mind as that will solve our problems with the bank henceforth; subject to us making the necessary amendments with the bank, of course. And below is the picture of the new Registration Certificate bought from ROS for RM 10 a copy. I bought two.

We have just qualified for the Presidential Citation.  Thank you PP KH Low for transferring your excess contributions to two of our new Rotarians who are now brand new PHFs.  This proves that the system actually wants brand new PHFs to qualify; top up PHFs contribute to the 100 USD per capita giving instead. With another PHF top up by PP Tan Sri Tay Ah lek, we'd have another goal achieved ie the 100 USD per capita giving. Phew. That was really a cliff hanger because the cut-off date is just one day away.

Every year we would have some fun with the Rotaractors and Interactors.  This year it was organised by the Rotaractors and held at MBS school padang.  It was quite a hot day but not too hot to be unbearable. Several games were played with prizes as well.  In the end packed food was distributed coupled with soup jagung that was not such a favourite with the kids.

As usual PP Gary Lim, would have some tricks up his sleeve.  He organised a competition to drink up these soup so that it won't go to waste.  Even the Rotarians present had to participate in the competition; but without the prize money.

RC Pudu fielded seven teams to the RIDC which was held at the HELP College of Arts & Technology over three days and two nights from 11-13 March.  Each team cost RM 750 and all of them were funded out of the generosity of our Rotarians. Below is the report from the organisers, PP Richard Jacob of RC Damansara.

The RIDC concluded with much success and fanfare. As expected 30 Teams participated 4 rounds of Asia Parliamentary Style each on a 3 on 3 contest. Our youngest contestant who was a top 10 best Speaker was in Form 1 and the eldest participant was in Form 6. Of the 30 Teams, 8 qualified for the Qtr Finals and had a good representation from the Klang Valley and Outstation. The  schools were:

1.      SMK Damansara Utama, Damansara
2.      Kolej Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban
3.      SMK Assuntha, Petaling Jaya
4.      SMK Victoria Institution, KL (sponsored by Pudu)
5.      SMK Sri Hartamas, KL
6.      ELC, Sierramas, KL
7.      SMK St. George, Taiping and
8.      SMK St. Michael’s, Ipoh.

This 1st RIDC Championship was won by SMK Damansara Utama and the 2nd Prize went to SMK Sri Hartamas. With this success the RIDC might be adopted as an annual event.

Sincere Congratulations to the Winners and all who participated.  Special thanks to DG Siti and DGN Mano, AG Teoh and Pres. Dato Muslim  who graced the Semi Finals and Finals and gave awesome words of motivation. Thanks also to Presidents and Rotarians who attended the event over the 3 days.

Our World Community Service (WCS) Project was started last Rotary Year 2014-15 as a tri-club project between RC Dhonburi (Thailand,) RC Singapore West (Singapore) and RC Pudu (Malaysia.) Each club contributes USD 1,000 to make a pool of USD 3,000 to be donated to the recipient for the year as chosen by the host club. Last year it was Pudu acting as the host club.

This year it was Singapore's turn to host. A group of us -- PE Sand Sohy, Rtn Laura Lee, Incoming International Service (IS) Director Sannice Soh and her daughter, current IS Director PP Alex Chang and his daughter, and yours truly - attended the event on Saturday 5 Mar. RC SW had arranged for us to visit three families who are members of the RDSS (Rare Disorders Society Singapore.)

It was really a very moving experience to witness first hand how the parents coped with their infants and toddlers who are suffering from these rare diseases.  The family that we visited had to make hospital calls with the kid twice a month costing them some S$10,000 per visit. The mother had to quit her job to look after the kid 24/7.  They obviously needed help and the RDSS fortunately is there to give them a helping hand. And we Rotarians were most glad to be able to offer something to ease their concern.

Today, Saturday 27 Feb, we had our second computer class.  Five new students, who are completely unfamiliar with the keyboard, took up the challenge to learn this "new" technology.  The old man on the right is 85 years old and he is an MM2H (Malaysia My 2nd Home) guy from Hong Kong. He heard about our services to the elderly by word of mouth. Wonderful.

Our first computer class started today at the Lab that was commissioned by YB Chew Mei Fun on Thursday 21 Jan 2016.  Five students ie two in their 70's, two in their 60's and one in her 50's were thrilled to peck the keyboards and end up producing a letter inviting their children to come home for their father's birthday party.  The only man in the picture came all the way from Putra Heights.

I also had two volunteer instructors to help me. And Faith Lum, the Foundation's Admin Officer, was especially helpful. It was so nice to see the happy faces of these people at the end of the 2-hour class.  They have eight more hours before the end of the course.

The next class will be on Saturday 27 Mar from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.  I was told seven people would be coming. This time some Rotaractors are also coming to help as volunteer instructors.

As we celebrate 111 years of Rotary Service, we reflect on Paul Harris’ words, which today is a realty.

We are passing our tenth milestone now. May our happiness increase with our usefulness. What Rotary will be 100 years hence, none living can imagine. There is nothing impossible to Rotary now.”

Rotarians are ordinary people doing extraordinary things, and there is nothing impossible to Rotary now. We do good, we enjoy being a Rotarian and it is the happiness that brings us together to be useful to others.  Rotarians are truly a Gift to the World.

Happy Birthday Rotary and Happy Birthday Rotarians. Be Rotary Proud!

There will be three events in March, all requiring money to be spent. Hopefully, the Rotary motto of "Service above Self" is foremost in the minds of our Rotarians.
  • Firstly, there is the "Tri-Club WCS project" with RC Dhonburi and RC Singapore West at Singapore. It will be from 3-5 Mar. Singapore is an expensive city but hopefully we'll still have good representation at this event.
  • Secondly, there is the "Childrens Voice for Peace" event at Alor Star on 5 and 6 Mar.  Some 500 kids -- orphans and the under-privilged -- from Sungai Petani, Kulim and Alor Star will enjoy the ETS train ride into Alor Star together with Rotarians from Kuala Lumpur and towns along the way.  It is a "Celebrate Rotary" occasion endorsed by the District. Some money to be spent; but not much. So, fellow Rotarians do come forward and supprt this event.  The organisers have also ensured that those above 60 will enjoy their senior citizen discounts.
  •
  • Thirdly, there is another District endorsed event for the Interactors.  It's a debating contest between Interact clubs on topics from the Rotary's six Areas of Focus. It will be held at HELP College of Arts and Technology, Fraser Business Park, Kuala Lumpur for three days and nights from 13 to 15 Mar.  No money required from members except from those that pledged to sponsor the teams that we are fielding. Do come on any of the days and support your Interactors.

To all our Chinese brethren, we wish you a Happy New Year of the Monkey. The monkey is a curious, mischievous, clever, intellectual and creative animal. Looks like we will have quite an interesting year this year; it being our 50th Anniversary year as well.
And as a recently developed "culture" there will be many "Open Houses" to welcome friends and acquaintances. As usual PP Gary Lim will have his Open House on the 1st day of CNY 6:30 pm onwards; and our President Elect Sandy Soh will have hers on Sunday 14 Feb 2016 from 11:30 am. Let us all meet for good fellowship.

As usual we presented our RM 3,000 cheque for the upkeep of the home and some goodies and ang pows for their CNY cheer.

We also had a good turnout of some 17 Rotarians who came with their spouses and friends.  The Rotaractors were there too. Thank you guys.

Following the successful Rotary jamboree cum fellowship and Memebership Development Seminar in Langkawi some months ago, the District decided to have another one hoping to attract more participation from clubs in south and central Malaysia.

It started in the morning of Sat 30 Jan with a clean up of the picnic area called Burmese Pool in the Taiping park. School children were mobilised for this event organised by the three Rotary clubs in Taiping. It was very well supported. In the afternoon, we had the Membership Development seminar, as per the programme below:

We did it once again! Fund raising activities were carried out by the Rotary Club of Pudu and funds were raised to provide scholarships and grants to the secondary education and undergraduate students. The event was held at SMK Methodist Boys School and we were honored to have our guest of honour, the Past District Governor, Datuk Dr Mohinder Singh among us. For the past 28 years, Rotary Club of Pudu provided financial aid to the recipients of the scholarships who were deserving students who were selected through the recommendation of the Principal of the respective schools.

For this project, under President Dato' Muslim Ayob, a total amount of RM 53,200.00 was awarded to 122 secondary students from SMK Cheras, SMJK Kuen Cheng, SMK Dato' Onn, SMK (L) Methodist, SMK (P) Pudu and SMK Sri Sentosa and 3 undergraduate scholarships. We believe these scholarships and grants are contribution to the students and will help them to be one step closer to their dreams.

We are most grateful to Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun for officially launching the Computer Lab at Autorr Activity Centre.  This lab is meant to encourage the target group of senior citizens to enjoy the benefits of technology and stop wondering why the typewriter is no longer in vogue and the shorthand or trengkas typists are no longer a vocation.

Our Rotarians too may wish to advance themselves beyond emails and whatsapp now that Rotary International wants us to communicate with them via My.Rotary and look at our performance as a Club via the Presidential Citation Dashboard. The Lab will try to accommodate all your desires.

We had a good project launch on Saturday 9 Jan 2016.  The event took place at the VTOC-YWCA premises in Jalan Hang Jebat (formerly Jalan Davidson) in front of the Stadium Negara. A very congested place now with the building works for the MRT station going full steam.

Our Guest of Honour was YB Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, the Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Women, Family & Community Development.  The right person indeed.  After the usual speeches and photo ops sessions, she toured the facility where our students -- aged between 16 and 25 yeras old -- coming from Sabah, Sarawak, other states in Peninsular Malaysia and, of course, the majority were from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, were at their work places.

She also shared with us her Ministry's plans for the uplift of women economically, especially the single mothers and under-privileged women.

And, upon hearing of our project with the senior citizens, she also mentioned the Ministry's concern for the senior citizens, who too need assistance, not so much to make them dependent but to make them productive and enjoy their golden years.  Thus she expressed her desire to visit Autorr Foundation sometime soon.

Monday, December 28th - This day, i believe, was truly a milestone on my journey as a Rotarian. As a newly inducted member of the Pudu Rotary Club, this was the first AGM I have had the pleasure of attending. Over the past three months of socializing amongst the other members of the club and learning the ropes of this organization, I have learnt a lot. But few experiences have come close to that of my first AGM, and here is why.

First, let me put things into perspective. Prior to this, all the events and functions I attended were more casual. There were dinner parties and charity events, meetings, talks by working professionals and other social functions. This was the first formal meeting I would attend. Though attending only to observe, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I did have a tingling sense of excitement walking into that dinner - you know that feeling when you're finally allowed to sit at the grown up's table.

The AGM itself was, for lack of a better word, enlightening. Observing simple procedures that were evidence of the rich history the club has made me realize what an honor it was to be a part of. It also gave me a sense that there is much more to learn and I'm lucky to have more experienced members to guide me. Overall it was a great night and an even greater experience for a young Rotarian and I am grateful for the opportunity.

The Webmaster/President/Secretary is taking this opportunity to wish all RC Pudu Rotarians and readers of this website a Happy New Year 2016.  The year 2015 is behind us practically, but in memory it is still very much with us. A lot was done during the last half year and a lot was achieved.  And for that I am truly grateful for the support given -- in whatever form -- by all members.  For the negative bits, don't worry.  They can be overcome or have been overcome.

Now is the time to look ahead. But just don't look. Join me again to do something worthwhile. Let's make things happen; and not wonder what happened.

Today 29 December, 2015 our venerable nonagenarian, charter member Tan Sri Soong Siew Hoong organised a visit to the Genting Higlands Urban Farm at GohTong Jaya. It has all the market garden vegetables and exotic fruits including strawberries, figs, passion fruit etc.  It's a 10 acre site and you have to be quite fit and a farming enthusiast to cover the whole area. I gave up after a while and went on to do a bit of shopping for strawberries and figs and some refreshments.  All the sales people are Indonesian women, judging from their accent. From RC Pudu, besides the Tan Sri, PP Quah SC and PP Ray Choo, wife and kid; and myself went.

The Tan Sri also treated us to lunch at a nice Kepala Ikan curry house. Well, those who were invited to go but didn't go really missed something.  Anyway, after lunch we left for Autorr Foundation in Ampang for the launching of the Computer Lab.  The lab already had some enthusiastic seniors trying out the keyboards and enjoying their "creativity and productivity" with Word and PowerPoint; and even with Excel.  And a young lady volunteer instructor was also there with the seniors, flitting from computer to computer, helping out the seniors.  Looks great.

Every thing works so we officially launched the lab by my handing over the cheques to Mr Andrew Tan of Nexcell Solutions.

It's very seldom that we have the birthdays of Prophet Mohamad and Prophet Jesus almost coinciding.  And this year we have it - Prophet Mohamad's birthday or "Maulidur Rasul" on 24th December and Jesus on 25th December, celebrated as Christmas every year based on the Gregorian calendar.  The Muslim calendar is lunar-based hence the "Maulidur Rasul" will keep on moving forward every year - without readjustment unlike the Chinese lunar calendar. It'll be a long time yet before we get this opportunity for a twin celebration.

Our Computer Lab at Autorr Activity Centre is coming up nicely.  Installation started on Friday 18 Dec and will be will be going through a full technical checkout.  It's a 5-seat system based on the OfficeStation thin-client concept.  This Lab is partly funded by TRF District Grant of USD 1,000.

Our first course would probably start in January 2016, with the Pudu Rotarians - particularly Board members and appointees - desirous of knowing ClubRunner more fully.

On Thursday 10 Dec night we had our 49th anniversary dinner.  It was well attended and I am very pleased to see that everybody enjoyed themselves and really showed good fellowship. But the most pleasant surprise of the evening was when AG Teoh came out to announce that we are now a 5 star Club having lifted ourselves from 3 star when we started the year.  Apparently he was observing us intently for the last six months and was fully satisfied that we are of 5 star world class standard.  Wow, that's indeed most pleasant.

I tried to work out how we did it.  Then I realised that I had this poser staring at me from the left panel of this home page. So, here are the answers:
  1. Fun and energetic - yes. We even have a songbird with her own group called "Glitterama" entertaining us and encouraging us to join in.
  2. Stand out - yes; excellent sustainable projects caring for the senior citizens this year, the under-privileged girls this year also, scholarship grants for school children since 1972 and the unfortunate old folks since 1989.
  3. Identity - we are already having good public image.  We will be better known when we complete our branding exercise soon.
  4. Signature activity - yes.  Caring for the young and the old in a sustained manner made possible by a healthy capitalised fund.
  5. Diverse membership - yes.  All races, foreign nationals, men and women, youngest being 25 and oldest 90 years old.
  6. Open to new ideas - yes.  Will be going CLP soon after 10 years.
  7. Involved - yes.  At the recent Rotary Family Open Day we had 30 members out of 46 involved in the organising committee.  Our Rotaractors and Interactors were also involved.
  8. Is it everything I want the Club to be? - not quite, but we are getting there moving along the right path
  9. Vibrant - yes.  The feeling is there.
Having managed to reclaim this status that we used to enjoy many years past, the leadership will now have a big responsibility to maintain if not improve this lofty status.  We already have a good slogan "Continuity of Service through Effective Leadership" that places the success of the Club as dependednt on effective leadership.  Hence, the emphasis on leadership, always.

Now, I have another catch phrase "Jaga Standard" which is very Malaysian and fun to say; but has such deep meaning that it even embraces the 4-Way Test.  Think about it.

And think about this too.  Our challenge now is "how to manage success."

The Rotary Family Open Day yesterday that we worked so hard for the last couple of months, is over.  It was successful, in spite of some hiccups due to changes in arrival time of the Guest of Honour. Nevertheless, we all adjusted well and the rest of the programme progressed smoothly.

I am particularly grateful to our venerable Tan Sri Soong Siew Hoong, who is also our charter member - meaning he has been with the Club for all its 49 years - to have attended the event from morning till late afternoon.  He is truly a role model for all members of the Club, especially the PPs; and the younger ones, of course.

Our former Rotarian PP Chow Tain had a stroke some months ago.  Many of his friends from the Club have visited him.  And now arrangements have been made for him to do the necessary therapies like talking and walking.  He is responding well with zest and determination.  We wish him well and hope to see him back to normal as soon as possible. (Story related by PP Quah SC.)

An evening well spent learning about ClubRunner! I am amazed to see that our club has such an amazing platform to receive information from this website, and I strongly believe in many years to come, this website will serve an important role to future members in viewing the history of the club.

People come and they go, and so will our memories fade. To some, technology is a threat~ There will always be two-sides to a coin; rather than looking at technology as a negative impact to the world, so let's make full use of its potential- technology is advancing and evolving each second, and we must be mindful to have a bigger vision than today! So let's learn more about ClubRunner and bring a closer Rotary Club of Pudu and other International Rotary Clubs.

We had the 5th meeting regarding the RFOD - Rotary Family Open Day - last Saturday 14 Nov at 11:00 am, this time at the Autorr Foundation premises.  The idea of having it on location is to ensure that members of the committee are familiar and have "the feel" of the place where we'll be having our major event for the year. Imagine getting lost on the actual day. It'll be quite embarrassing, Waze or Google map notwithstanding.

It was a good meeting and we decided to have two more meetings at the place on Sat 21 Nov and 28 Nov, same time.  These would be rehearsals for the actual day Sunday 29 Nov, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

After that we had lunch at the nearest Aeon Big mall. Thank you all for attending, and we expect more to make it for the next two meetings as mentioned above.

I am in Manila, arrived this morning by MAS.  Checked into the Sofitel where the Manila Institute for Zones 6B, 7A and 10B. We are in Zone 6B. The opening ceremony is in the afternoon, The delegates, about 1,200 Rotarians and their spouses filled up the hall.

At night we had the Welcome Dinner. Very impressive show indeed with wonderful display of Philippine culture -- song and dance in particular. Tomorrow we'll have some important Rotary stuff for seminar discussions in the afternoon.  In the morning, I am going to Tagaytay some 65km on the coast where our sister club, RC Mandaluyong is having their RYLA do. They invited me for the event for some fellowship and to see how they do things. The President, John Lam said the sights along the drive would also be interesting. So I got curious and decided to go. He promised he'll return me to the Sofitel after lunch.

This afternoon, we had the installation of two units of Hydrotherapy Foot Spa equipment installed at Autorr Foundation facility in Ampang.  These units are quite expensive, thus were jointly donated by Tan Sri Soong, Madam Lin Chua and Datin Paduka Yong Dai Ying. Two more units of Full Body Spa will also be installed later after suitable renovations are done at the Gents and Ladies restrooms to accommodate a long bath each.

The Steering Committee of the ARE-3R project met for the third time yesterday at the Shangri La hotel, soon after the Club's regular meeting which ended at 2:15 pm.  The meeting was chaired by Dato Muslim; all committee members were present including Alex Lee from ERA.  We finally got the 2nd draft of the MoU done. It will now go to respective Boards for approval. The signing ceremony and launch of the project is scheduled to be on 29 Nov 2015 in conjunction with the Rotary Family Open Day (RFOD) where the MP for Ampang, YB Puan Hajjah Zuraida Kamaruddin will officiate.

ERA organised a lunch at the Nyonya Restaurant in SS 23, Petaling Jaya yesterday.  This was to welcome the new members that joined ERA during the year.  As a new member I also attended, but came late because I had to attend the RFOD (Rotary Family Open Day) meeting at the Lake Club earlier.

We all had to introduce ourselves; and I took the opportunity to tell them what RC Pudu is doing in collaboration with ERA and Autorr.  And a bit of marketing as well about our RFOD on 29 Nov 2015, Sunday at the Autorr Foundation Centre in Ampang. Hopefully, some of them will turn up and have a good time.  Tan Sri Soong who is going on 90 in December, also highlighted the importance of this partnership in the interest of helping senior citizens remain useful and productive members - rather than a burden - to family or society.

In spite of all the apologies for not attending this meeting, a sizeable number turned up at the RLC Buttery today at 12:00 hrs.  Well done guys.  However, please note that we only have 4 weeks to go to the actual day 29 Nov, 2015.  So even if you can't attend, your inputs (not just apologies) by way of email, whatsapp etc are needed to indicate that you have duly actioned your assigned tasks. But of course, we'd prefer your actual presence.  Do make an effort; especially when we do our meeting(s) at the Autorr Foundation Centre itself since many of you have not been there.  We don't want you to get lost finding the place on the actual day, do we?

We have now revised the 100 Percenter's Dinner scheme by introducing a more meaningful criteria ie good attendance at Club meetings (including makeups) and good attendance at Club events/activities and District events; and even Zone or RI events.  It's a point system with appropriate weightage given.  The idea is to encourage Rotarians to be really active and supportive of the Club's activities besides showing willingness to learn and enjoy fellowship at District level.  Willingness to attend the Zone or RI Convention really means the Rotarians are truly committed.

We had our October Board meeting last night at the new Rotary Centre in Kelana Jaya.  It's a bit far for some of us but quite close for those living in PJ / Subang Jaya.  However, at that time of day - 6:30 pm for the meeting - most people didn't make it due to traffic congestion.  So we had to start anyway at 7:00 pm. But three turned up soon enough making the total of nine attendees (out of 13.)  Cost of hiring the place is only RM 50 with deposit of RM 100 as insurance for breakages, forgetting to switch off lights, aircon etc.  The concept is bring your own food and drinks. No problem there; we had nasi lemak, kueh and teh tarik, coffee etc brought as usual by our thoughtful Club Service Director.

It's a nice place though with the necessary facilities but just too inconvenient for most of us.  So we've decided to go back to our usual place at the Royal Lake Club as from next month's Board meeting.

The Steering Committee of the ARE-3R project went to Klang today to see an Urban Farm in operation.  This farm is the effort of Mr Chew Song Kong of ERA.  Mr Chew, by the way, was the President of RC Port Klang some years ago.  The farm is certainly very innovative and practical for anyone living in terraced, linked, semi-D or bungalow houses with a small plot of land at the back or side of the house.  Water is from the rain duly piped to a collection pond and worked by solar pumps. Seeing is believing and what we saw was certainly convincing.  I believe it would help to occupy the idle times of the senior citizens, the target group of our project with Autorr Foundation.

Top picture shows Tan Sri Soong explaining to us about the rain water harvesting technique. Bottom picture shows Mr Chew SK explaining to us about the vegetables planted in a reject container he obtained from a chemical factory. The centre tubing shows the way to feed fertilizers including creepy crawlies like worms etc. Shown in both pictures are Tan Sri Soong, Mdm Lin Chua, Ms Jenny Soong (Asst Secretary of ERA,) VP Rtn Jeffery Yap and wife, Mr Chew SK, Datin Yong (President of ERA) and yours truly.

Our Club's major project for the year is the "ARE-3R" an acronym coined by the Steering Committee for the collaboration work of the three NGOs namely Autorr Foundation, RC Pudu and Expertise Resource Association.  ARE of course are the first letters of Autorr Foundation, Rotary Club of Pudu and Expertise Resource Association.  The 3R stands for "Rejuvenate, Relax and Reconnect."  Thus this new acronym replaces our 1Club DCCA project name.

This collaboration will be manifested by our launching of the project at the "Hari Terbuka Keluarga Rotary" or Rotary Family Open Day on Sunday 29 November 2015 to be officiated by the MP for Ampang, YB Puan Zuraidah Kamaruddin.

The topic about the visit to Old Folks popped out many times in the Whatsapp groupchat. Initially I didn’t want to promise to go but 2 weeks prior to the visit, I've made up my mind and replied to the chat room saying, “Please count me in.” At the same time, I decided to extend this meaningful event to my family members by posting it in my family group chat. My mum and sister immediately agreed to join me. However, a week before the visit, a good friend of mine texted and reminded me that she’s leaving to Manchester on the same weekend. I was like…..oh crap! Since I’ve promised to join the visit, so I have to rearrange my schedule. Hence I quickly checked the train ticket to Ipoh hoping to get the right ticket. Voila…..I managed to get it and left on Friday night, returning to KL on Sat evening. Thank god, luck is with me this time. If I didn;t manage to get the ticket, I would have to drive all the way to Ipoh, then it would be a superb tiring week.

RI have a new attendance requirement.  In addition to the weekly meeting attendance criteria, members are now to record or have their attendance/participation at Club/District events and functions duly recorded. By doing this, the Club now have a better picture of its members' commitment and support for all its efforts to be of service to the community.  This will also help the District to "measure" the vibrancy and activeness of the Club.

On that note, I am pleased that attendance at yesterday's outing at the Old Folks' Home in Jenjarom was well attended by some 25 people inclusive of family members, Rotaractors, and a French youth exchange student.

I found this while surfing the eClub One website recently.  It certainly is "food for thought" if you care to think about it.  Let's hear your views but not in here.  We are going to start a "Letter to the Editor" page soon in the eBulletin.  So do participate and let's share your bright ideas.

Fresh Look at Rotary Meetings

  1. A major problem to be addressed in the pilot is “weak and unattractive weekly meetings that are perceived to be designed by silly old men for silly old men.”  This includes:
    1. the out-dated sergeant's fine sessions,
    2. long-winded reports from committee chairs,
    3. singing corny old songs from the Edwardian music hall era,
    4. boring guest speakers from charities who simply come along to ask for money,
    5. meetings that run beyond their allotted time because of poor chairmanship,
    6. high cost of meals,
    7. menus of "Rotary comfort food" for the over 70's, and
    8. failure to acknowledge the needs of younger men and women who may need to drop out of meeting attendance due to a sick child or other household emergency.
  1. Also, there is concern that thousands of older Rotarians are focusing on 100% meeting attendance and writing a few checks, but are not interested in actual volunteer service work.

Sandy and I went for our sister club RC Singapore-West installation on 30 July 2015 at the Jen Hotel in Tanglin Singapore.  Sandy's daughter Vone Kwan came along; likewise our former Rotarians - PP Shirley Thum and Patrick Lee - attended as well.  Singapore-West is an old club, older than us by six years.  And like us, they have similar problems.  Would you believe that their President Wee Leong How is also their first recycled Past President; just like me. And that he too was a military man.  What a coincident; we had a lot in common.  Hence, when we spoke about our WCS project, the synergy was immediate.  That's nice.

We had a good meeting today, the third meeting for the new RY and first after the fasting month (Ramadan.) Attendance was good at 36 pax but four short of our 40 pax obligation to Shangri la.  That means we have to waste four pax worth of money.  Imagine if we drop down to 20 pax; meaning we'll be wasting 20 pax worth of money (and that's RM 35 x 20 = 700 smackeroos to the Shang.)  Do you get my drift?
We also had a good talk on "Italian Cheeses" by Mr Riccardo Ferrarotti but as you can see from the picture above our guys seem to have poor attention span.  Maybe it's the new smartphone culture that's bugging all of us now.  I am also guilty of that some time.  So what's the solution?  Literally switch off the phones and put them away in your pockets or handbag.

Good meeting Mohd Muslim Ayob 2015-07-26 16:00:00Z 0

I am so pleased to learn that we have 100% attendance for the July 13th meeting.  Well done guys.  See, it's so easy to have 100% attendance if only you know how.  Usually, it's done by way of make-ups. Here's how:
  • Make up at another Club's meeting - 14 days before or 14 days after your own meeting.  It's a good practice because you get to meet the Club members at close quarters.  Nice to observe how they conduct their meetings; how they welcome (or ignore you)  and to taste their food (simple few dishes or full spread meals like ours.)
  • Make up on your overseas trips - much more satisfying to observe as per the local clubs. Don't forget to bring our Club banners on your overseas trips so that you can exchange them with the clubs visited.  And to say a few words about your own clubs. Those guys probably don't even know where Malaysia is.
  • Make up online at an eClub - try it.  Just google for an eClub and access the website.  Stay for a minimum of 30 minutes, browse the various features, events and activities of the eClub, answer a few questions and you've made up. A make up card will be emailed to you.
  • If you go on leave overseas and don't think you could include Rotary meetings in your schedule, then you must put in for LOA (Leave of Absence.) Strictly speaking you must apply to the Board for LOA.  But in this day and age, we have to trust you with the 4-Way Test. Just enter your leave dates in ClubRunner under the Leave of Absence module.  By doing so, you'll not drag Pudu's Attendance record down.
  • Honorary members -  Their attendance at our regular meetings are counted towards Club Attendance record.  So do invite them once in a while to attend and keep up with the Club's activities and progress.  Honorary members are, of course, not obliged to attend at all and their attendance at other clubs are not considered make ups.
  • Exempt or excused members - We have many of them in RC Pudu (being a 49 year old Club.) They are not obliged to attend regular Club meetings.  But one or two have taken advantage of this fact and had 100% non-attendance record.  Please note that their attendance are counted towards the Club Attendance record.  Again, do encourage them to attend our regular Club meetings and help us move up to 5 Star status.
  • Don't know where clubs meet - No excuse really.  But for the ill informed, it's in this website; left panel under Other Links >Club Finder.  For smartphones, you can download the Club Finder app from both Android and iPhone services. The District also have similar info under "Where Clubs Meet."
  • Banking your make ups -  This is also possible.  Check out ClubRunner or RI website or your mentor for the rules governing this.

It was a hectic weekend indeed for me and members of the organising committee for the Club's 49th Presidential Installation event on 4 July 2015.  Four out of five sister clubs sent their representatives to join us in the event at the Shangri la Kuala Lumpur. They were met by the transportation committee at KLIA or KLIA2 on 3 July and sent home on 5 July.

Our Guest of Honour was the Romanian Ambassador, HE Constantin Nistor who is also our Honorary member. Other VIP guests were YB Senator Admiral (Ret'd) Tan Sri Anwar Mohd Noor, the Deputy Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Dato Seri Kamarulzaman and Madam Lin Chua with whom the Club will be associating to do a long term project for a "Day Care Centre for the Aged." The DG was represented by AG Teoh Kwan Swee.

Our own songbird Rtn Tenny Lee and a local band entertained us soon after the formalities of the installation of the President and his Board of Directors were completed. The dinner was of Chinese dishes and all 20 tables were taken up.

"Hello everybody, my name is Sam, from the Rotary Club of Pudu.  P.Y. was our past president and honorary Rotarian.  An Honorary Rotarian is the highest honour that can be bestowed by a Club on an individual.

Our Club has lost a great Rotarian and a good friend.  His family has lost a great provider, a good husband and a loving father/father-in-law.  Society has lost an outstanding lawyer, extraordinary fund raiser, and a substantial tax payer.

I’ve know P.Y. for over 30 years.  On the year I joined in 1984, P.Y. pulled me and many others on a rubber boat-ride down Klang River to raise funds.  That was the beginning of many to come.

He organized the Mount Kinabalu Climb for rehabilitated drug addicts in early 80’s.  He did the law conference after that and in 1992 he led the club to do the biggest fund raising ever.  "The Platters" gala charity show at Shangri la and the Club netted in nearly RM 400,000.  This was followed by other amazing shows like Skeeter Davis, Lobo, Johny Tillotson, Damai Orchestra, Tribute to Bee Gees and many others.

Today Pudu Rotary Club has very substantial Bank Deposits, thanks mainly to P.Y.

We are truly indebted to him for his vast contributions, his leadership and we all will miss him very dearly, miss his smiling face, his humor, his wit, laughter, always having a kind word for everyone.  ADIOS, MY DEAR FRIEND, WE WILL CHERISH YOUR LEGACY.

May he rest in Peace."

This is the Eulogy by PP Choo Jee Sam. The Condolence tribute is on the next page.

As from 1 July 2015, we will have a mentoring system in place.  This is to ensure new Rotarians are well informed about the Rotary movement, the running of this Club and what's expected of them as Rotarians.  Senior Rotarians will be assigned something to mentor on and they are expected to be the subject matter experts on the particular assignments.  This is also to bring them into the loop and avoid the tendency of becoming RINOs.
The guide book is available for download (see Download panel on the right column.)

We made another visit today Monday 25 May, to AUTORR Foundation.  This was done soon after our weekly Club meeting (this time at Hotel Sentral Pudu.)  AG Teoh of Gp 10 clubs came along.  It was a good visit with Rtn Sandy Soh (our Incoming PE) suggesting quite a lot of ideas to make the place vibrant and generating income to support more activities.  In particular, the 1,800 auditorium should be maximised in its usage by corporate, government and NGO organisations like us Rotary.

However, the facility still needs quite a bit of equipping and this is where we could do a lot by way of fund-raising, donations, know-how and show-how. Dato Muslim got some ideas on this and hope to see this materialise soon enough. As a starter, he presented a digital camera complete with accessories to Mdm Lin Chua for use by them to document, in pictures, their activities. This is also to lay the foundation of the partnership that we hope to forge, for mutual good to benefit the target audience -- the senior citizens.

We had a good turnout.  After a hearty meal of Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai and Kuey Teow, we sat down for a PowerPoint presentation by Dato Muslim on the 1Club DCCA project.  This is the first time the Board has seen this presentation since Dato never had the opportunity to present because of restrictions imposed by the restaurants where the Club used to have the meetings. What followed was a round table discussion on the project for which everyone was supportive.  The presentation ppt file is available for download by all Club members. It's under the Download panel on the right of this homepage.

From time to time we have to go on leave for holidays or business overseas.  But your obligation as a Rotarian to maintain your attendance is still there. The solutions are many, namely: makeup at clubs overseas, makeup online at an eClub, or take leave of absence (LOA.) To obtain LOA you must apply in writing to the Board. Invariably the LOA will be approved.  However, to make things easier with the application of the 4-Way Test, you can just register for LOA in ClubRunner. See screenshots below:

On Monday 18 May after our weekly meeting the Incoming Board members were taken on a visit to the AUTORR Foundation with whom we are going to partner to carry out our sustainable 1Club project for the setting up of a Day Care Centre for the Aged or DCCA for short.  Mdm Lin Chua, the philanthropist owner and Chairman of the Board of Trustees greeted us and took us round to view the facility.  It's obvious that this lovely facility is under utilised thus fitting in well with our idea of setting up a DCCA. All we need to do is equip the facility with the necessary equipment for the needs of the seniors. Eventually it'll be a thriving place for these seniors for R&R, make new friends and enhance their unfulfilled life with new knowledge to enable them to perhaps write their biographies or memoirs, novels, blogs etc. I am also pleased to say that ERA (Expertise Resource Association) - another RC Pudu initiated outfit headed by our Charter member Tan Sri Soong Siew Hoong, will be coming on board to partner us. Thus we'll have a tri-partite partnership scheme to make this project sustainable and successful.

Address by

K.R. Ravindran
RI President-elect

When I spoke to you on Sunday night, I spoke to you about our ambition and our ideals. I spoke to you about our role in Rotary, and about being a gift to the world.

But my role as your president, and your role as district governors, is not only to inspire — it is to be sure that Rotary functions at the highest possible level, in every respect. Today, I want to talk to you about the very important role that all of us will play next year, as administrators of this organization.

And I will begin by saying that I ask and expect you all to approach the practical duties of Rotary administration with the same zeal, and the same standards, you apply in your professional lives.

My Rotary Friends,

Today is a day of pride and happiness to all the 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide in over 200 countries, 34, 558 clubs, 537 Rotary districts as we celebrate the 110th Anniversary of Rotary International. It was on this very day that the first Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Chicago was chartered.

Rotary's 110 year track record of professionals joining together to use their skills and passion to make a difference in their communities is one that fosters pride in Rotarians worldwide.  These values have been captured in various guiding principles and other statements over the past 110 years. To carry out Rotary's mission, it is important for us to be constantly reminded and be familiar with them to truly understand the history of commitment to professionalism and service which is Rotary's legacy.

Why are we having ClubRunner?
And as of 1 July 2014, we migrated to a new “cloud-based” website hosted by ClubRunner. This is to allow members of the Club to participate in its information update.  The intention was for the webmaster to not be the central figure for the authoring of its content.  With ClubRunner, Club members, especially Club officers, are empowered to post  stories/news, documents, pictures etc into the website.  Thus the longevity of the website would be assured.

Are we achieving this aspiration?
Not really. Some 45% of members have not even bothered to access the website. See statistics below.

Dear Fellow Rotarians

Yes the RY 2015-16 theme speaks for itself - Be A Gift To The World ....and it may not just something that we do for one year but for as long as we are Rotarians and are committed to the cause, Rotary is here to stay for a very long time.

It was a proud moment for me today, as stood on stage is our PDG Rotarian Dr R T Arasu and Dr Kamala, recognized as one of Rotary International Trainers at the RI Assembly. PDG Arasu was facilitating the DGEs sessions while Dr Kamala was facilitating the DGE's spouse sessions throughout the 5 days.  It is an honour to our District and an inspiration to all of us.  These are some of the Rotary moments we should all be proud of.  This augur well for our District and we should unite as Rotarians to raise our flag even higher.  There is so much out there to be done and we can only do it in one voice.

See you back home soon.........missing the curries and nasi lemak!

Regards

I would like to extend my warm greetings and best wishes to all my fellow Rotarians and their families, as we usher in the New Year.
I know that the Year 2014, we are leaving behind has been a very trying and a challenging year for all Malaysians. We have witnessed the unprecedented tragedies in having to lose a total of 537 lives in both the MH 370 as well as the MH 17 flights and lately again the Air Asia Indonesia flight QZ 8501from Surabaya to Singapore has claimed the lives of its passengers and crew members. While, our thoughts and prayers are with all the bereaved families it is our fervent hope that they are able to withstand the agony and pain that they have gone through.

The flood in Malaysia this year is very bad; almost like the big one in 1972.  At this time of writing the number of evacuees have gone past 120,000 souls.  All states are hit but the worst is experienced by Kelantan followed by Trengganu and Pahang.  Relief efforts have been hampered by bad weather and impassable roads and railway; and landing pads for helicopters.  The government have allocated 1/2 billion Ringgit for the relief efforts; with more and more donations pouring in and NGOs (including Rotary) and good samaritans doing their best to help with cash and kind.

In Rotary, we mark August as Membership and Extension Month. There is a good reason why we remind ourselves of the importance of membership early in every Rotary year: because the job of growing our membership is one that we can never begin too soon. It is also a job that we can never stop working on. In order to keep serving, Rotary always needs to be growing!

This year, we must finish the job.

Almost three decades ago, we Rotarians made a choice to give something far more important than money. We chose to give our word – our word that we would eradicate the poliovirus and create a future free of the disease.

But we haven't yet kept that word. We haven't yet made the earth polio-free. And in the words of Henry Ford, "You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do."

I would like to wish all of you Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Happy Holidays. It is a quiet Hari Raya this year as the nation is gripped by the doom and gloom over airline disasters and Sabah incursions. Added to that, the choking haze has dampened the Hari Raya celebrations and lessened the fun for many who vented their frustrations in Cyberspace. However, Pudu Rotarians had an enjoyable time at PP Dato Muslim’s open house on first day of Hari Raya.
