Disease prevention and treatment takes on many forms from supporting studies to helping immunize people to improving drinking water and the sanitation infrastructure. The world relies on Rotary to tackle these global challenges and set an example for others to follow. It is one of RI's seven Areas of Focus - many of us are aware of projects around the world supported by Rotary Clubs and The Rotary Foundation and contributing not only to healthy communities but peaceful communities.

Club Happenings

Tim Carroll, Artistic Director, Shaw Festival, headlined the event with a most enthralling address seemingly delivered 'off the cuff' and with very good humour. Brilliantly, he took the Rotary's four way test and interpreted each question in relation to how he sees it applies to the role of theatre.

Included among the crowd of more than 100 were many "Lamplighters" who have voluntarily participated as playwrights, producers, directors, actors, stage designers, costume makers + to enable the phenomenal success of twenty productions of the Lamplighter Tour - a unique project that brings local history to life while nurturing artistic expression with the direct involvement of community members of all ages. Since 2004, the revenue generated from the annual tour has enabled Lincoln Rotary to invest substantially in building community through special projects that foster civic pride and enable cultural and economic development in the Town of Lincoln. In 2024, Lamplighter was paused while a group of club and community members collaborate and determine the journey forward for this much-loved production.

Also in attendance were two very special Rotary District 7090 leaders...

Immediate Past District Governor Scott Marcin, Member of the Rotary Club of Amherst South, was our 'roving reporter'. With tripod and mobile phone in hand, he and President Joanne chatted with many members of the crowd to get first hand comments on what this special event meant to them - a podcast in the making.

District Governor Dave Alexander, Member of the Rotary Club of Welland, brought official greetings, which he thoughtfully delivered with the following remarks...

I am a fan of theatre and short speeches, but I am also a fan of people who make a difference, or that person who is different because they see possibilities instead of ‘that’ll never work’ or ‘there’s nothing we can do to help’. In a way, being a Rotarian and the act of performance from the stage is to give all you can. There is a sense of belongingness and friendliness in both as we make sense of what it is to be human.

I bring greetings on behalf of Rotary District 7090 - that is the 30 Rotary clubs in upstate New York and the 30 clubs in this part of southwestern Ontario. Congratulations are in order to this partnership and to those that have organized this event.

Rotary is a service organization that can be found in many communities. We are your local humanitarians - providing support to people and agencies in need. These needs can be met in partnership with other local organizations or together with another one of the 35,000 Rotary clubs elsewhere on the planet - in 220 countries worldwide. We are an active network of doers who do an astonishing range of projects that help people, our environment, and our communities. Our work is a very real act and anyone is welcome amongst us.

Joining a Rotary club is a big step. Just like getting up on stage. But once you are there you will find you instantly have new friends, a great place for your ideas, and together you will help your community.

Much credit is due to PCL Pod #3 members for organizing the event with special thanks to Rob Foster for seeding the idea & his assistance in bringing the whole RCL team together for what was a most memorable community gathering.
