Rotary Club of Lincoln Meeting IN-PERSON

President Brenda welcomed 17 Rotarians and 2 guests, Sarah Ane & Madison Dalley, to the meeting. Thanks to Phil Goodwin who was the registrar for the club’s second in-person meeting since the latest COVID lockdown protocols around indoor gatherings were lifted.

In his invocation, Bob Groh gave thanks for the beautiful spring morning and good fortune for our safety with family & friends in this troubled world. He also gave thanks for those who are making a difference in our world. "We can all do gestures of goodwill to invoke peace and a positive change." He invited all to toast the Queen, Canada, our Club & Spring.

Sue Foster offered her Point of Pride, which featured news of her involvement with Katie Appleyard with District 7090's Public Image Committee. She gave a 'shout out' to Katie for her social media initiative with Lincoln Rotary's "Put a Face on Rotary Campaign", which is receiving rave reviews from District leaders.

For the first time in more than two years, the deck of cards was pulled out of hibernation for the LUCKY DRAW! Our guest, Madison, had the lucky ticket but unluckily pulled the 8 of spades.

ROTARY PARK UPDATE

Sarah Ane, Associate Director Recreation & Culture, Town of Lincoln

Madison Dalley, Landscape Architectural Designer & Lead, Rotary Park Project

President Brenda introduced Sarah and Madison. She noted that Sarah's involvement in community extends well beyond her work at the Town of Lincoln through her volunteering as a board member of Parks and Recreation Ontario; mentor through Brock University’s Sport Management Mentorship Program; & other roles with Pathways Mental Health & Niagara Children's Centre. While Sarah has been employed by the Town for more than four years, Madison joined the Lincoln team in July 2019 following her employment as a landscape design consultant in the private sector.

Rotary Park’s development on the 3.66 acre parcel of parkland adjacent to the Fleming Memorial Arena (Fleming Centre) in Beamsville has been a multi-phased project. The park began with the Phase I skatepark and pump track which was completed in the Fall of 2020. Phase II broke ground in the Spring of 2021 and was completed in the Fall of 2021. In partnership with the Fleming Foundation and Ontariogreen, the remainder of the Val Fleming Butterfly Garden will be planted in the Spring of 2022. An official grand opening and community event will be held in the park on Saturday, June 4, 2022, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Lincoln. In addition to Lincoln Town Council’s commitment to building Rotary Park, funds were also received from the public and private sector, and community members, who will be formally recognized at the grand opening.

Rotary Park is the first parkland development project to break ground since Town of Lincoln Council approved the Town’s first comprehensive Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan (PRCMP) in 2019. It is the Town’s second destination park and offers a variety of active and passive park elements including:

Action sports amenities; concrete skatepark and asphalt pump track. It is notable that Rotary Park's pump track is unique in Niagara Region.
Accessible play area with junior and senior play equipment, fitness equipment, rubber surfacing, seating, and a large shade structure with table seating, lighting, power and water hook up
Walking loop and trails, with lighting along main trails, seating, garbage/recycling receptacles, bike racks, entrance planting and park signs
Irrigated open lawn area with an adjacent shade structure with seating, lighting, and convenience power
Butterfly garden with a pergola, seating, trails, native pollinator plantings, and informational signage. The remainder of the butterfly garden will be planted this spring
Outdoor learning area with a shade structure and open space
Parking lot with lighting and a bioswale buffer
Drop-off & pick-up lay-by parking
Traffic calming and safety measures - crosswalk from the park to the Fleming Centre, speed humps along the driveway to the Fleming Centre.

The total cost of the park is $3.7 million of which $750,000 has been raised through contributions from external funders including Rotary Club of Lincoln, Fleming Foundation & federal/provincial government funding programs. The naming of Rotary Park was approved by Town Council in Summer 2019.

Sarah and Madison explained that Rotary Park is there for all ages and abilities. Once the park is fully functional later this spring, they shared some of the programming that will be there for all as well - Morning Walks; Adult Fitness; Music; Movie Nights; Butterfly Garden Presentations +++ Information on these programs is available on the Town of Lincoln website - www.lincoln.ca

Our Coldest Night of the Year West Niagara 2022 event officially raised $66,767!!!

Oh my goodness! How amazing is that?! We definitely surpassed our $60,000 goal. With such a crazy year already, we have a lot to be proud of. We did it! At the YW, we are so grateful that you showed up for all of the women, children, and men who are at risk of becoming homeless. You made sure that they have a home and access to supports so homelessness isn’t their reality. Thank you!

Your Rotary Club of Lincoln team did a fantastic job! You raised $7,965 this year! Did you know that since you started supporting the YW and this event in 2017, your team has raised $22,425 to help people experiencing homelessness?! You’ve changed a lot of lives!

I am still celebrating our success and hope you are too! Thank you for being a part of this incredible, successful and fun event. On behalf of every single person, who will get the support they need to get to a better, healthier, more sustainable place in their lives, I thank you for supporting the people in the YW’s West Niagara Affordable Housing and for cheering all of us on!
