YWCA Niagara's transitional supportive housing program
in our immediate community leading individuals
to self-sufficiency within the time frame of one to three years.
You can walk with us on event day - February 24 - or make the event your own and walk any day in February!

CLUB MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
November 28, 2023

Club President Joanne Serkeyn called the meeting to order at 7:30am and welcomed 12 Lincoln Rotarians & 2 guests, Amanda Laprise & Dawn Cavasin, Habitat for Humanity Niagara
 
Pod 3 member, Sue Foster, offered the Land Acknowledgment followed by her Thought for the Day featuring her experience with Martha Kralt, Gayle Lucas-Roth, & Jeanette Murphy on their interviews with two excellent candidates vying to be Rotary youth exchange students for the long term program in 2024-25. Apropos to this experience, Sue referenced the quote by Robert Louis Stevenson, "Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant."  She then invited all to join her in a toast to the King, Canada, Rotary International & Lincoln Rotary.
 
For his Point of Pride, Pod 3 member, Phil Goodwin, reminded everyone that it was "Giving Tuesday", the world’s largest generosity movement. Everyone has something to give and every act of generosity counts. His pride is rooted in Rotary's generosity throughout the world year round.

Sue Foster welcomed our guest speakers with brief introductions…
 
Dawn has been with Habitat Niagara for 8 years where her role has evolved from fund development to marketing, communications & public relations. She has a passion for helping to build stronger communities. Following 10 years in community relations at Brock University, Amanda joined Habitat Niagara in Summer 2022. She works closely with the ReStores, to recruit, onboard and support over 200 diverse volunteers.
 
In her very congenial style, Dawn began the presentation by highlighting that Habitat for Humanity is finishing off 30 years of grassroots service covering the entire Niagara region from Fort Erie to Grimsby in its MISSION...
To bring our community together to help families build strength, stability and independence through safe and affordable home ownership.

Lack of affordable housing is top concern for Canadians based on results of a survey in 2023…
  • Half of Canadians spend 50% or more of their household income on housing costs
  • Four in ten Canadians are concerned about their ability to pay their rent or mortgage over the next year (41%)
  • 94% of Canadians feel that the goal of owning a home is more difficult to reach
  • 92% of Canadians across the country believe there is a shortage of affordable housing

Prospective homeowners must demonstrate that they are:
  • In need of suitable housing
  • Willing to partner with Habitat
  • Able to make affordable mortgage payments
How Habitat Works
build: Families selected for Habitat homeownership help build their homes assisted by volunteers and community support.
buy: Habitat homeowners pay an affordable mortgage (not to exceed 30%) geared to their income (evaluated on a yearly basis).
reinvest: Mortgage payments are invested into a revolving fund, referred to as the Fund for Humanity, which is used by the local Habitat to build more homes for families in their community.
 
Habitat secures properties for new builds through donations and purchases. Currently, Habitat Niagara has captured enough land to cover new builds over the next 6-7 years. A property, recently purchased from a church in Niagara Falls, has enough capacity for 16 new townhouses.  In 2023, four families in Niagara became new Habitat homeowners. In 2024, build plans include one development in Port Colborne - single detached and two developments in Thorold - one semi-detached & six townhouses. Once completed, nine families will have new affordable homes.
 
Research shows that the majority of Habitat families enjoy improved health, happiness and overall wellbeing.
 
Amanda began her portion of the presentation by explaining that Habitat for Humanity operates a social enterprise called ReStore that sells donated home furnishings, appliances, and other renovation materials to the public at a discounted rate. The first ReStore in Canada was opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1991, and since then, has expanded to hundreds of locations across Canada and the United States, and a thousand locations worldwide.
 
Every Habitat ReStore is different, offering a unique shopping experience for those looking to add something new to their homes. The inventory is always changing as new items are donated by local residents and businesses daily. Consumers can expect to find an exciting wide assortment of items including windows, lighting, hardware, appliances, furniture and more!
 
All proceeds raised at the three Habitat Niagara ReStores stay in Niagara to help families gain access to affordable home ownership. 
Amanda & Dawn concluded their presentation by highlighting the importance of volunteering with Habitat. “Volunteers are integral to the success of Habitat for Humanity Niagara, and our greatest resource, and there are many benefits of joining Habitat Niagara’s volunteer crew ranging in age from 15 to 80+ years.” Currently, recruiting volunteers for the Board of Directors, Grimsby & Fonthill ReStores & Salvage Crew are priorities. Click here to learn about volunteering for Habitat for Humanity Niagara.
