President Joanne Serkeyn called the meeting to order and welcomed 17 Lincoln Rotarians + Guest (almost Rotarian) Jennifer Toews.
Organized by Pod #3 members Dale Hatch, Sue Foster & Bill Wiley, Dale served as registrar. Sue began with the land acknowledgment (now available on a laminated sheet at registration).
Bill’s invocation included a quote by Almon E Roth…
“Our success or failure will not depend upon the machinery of Rotary or its physical growth, but upon the extent to which Rotary's ideals or objectives are translated into positive, tangible results in personal business, community and international life. We shall be known by our works.”
Bill also gave thanks for being together, for the food & the success of the club. He invited a toast to Rotary International & Rotary Club of Lincoln.
For her Point of Pride, Sue highlighted the attendance of 9 Lincoln Rotarians and our outgoing Rotary Exchange Students, Bridget & Wolf, at the 2024 District 7090 Conference held in Amherst, New York, April 26-27. At a recent District-wide Assistant Governors’ Meeting, she reported that our club had garnered attention for its exemplary leadership as a result of our noteworthy community and international projects many involving collaboration with other community organizations and Rotary clubs. Held in high esteem, she proudly announced, “We are rock stars!”
HAPPY BUCKS
Many, many bucks were offered in gratitude and praise for RCL’s celebration at Megalomaniac Winery (April 30) where we honoured three new Paul Harris Fellows - Martha Kralt, Sheila Mowbray & Jennifer Toews. The bounty of food was delicious and the proceedings were well organized & orchestrated thanks to Rob Foster, Barb Mitges & Terry Kotwa, the small but mighty event committee.
And, many expressed their happiness for enjoyable celebrations with their families on Mother’s Day (May 12)

Sue - for a very successful Great Lakes Watershed Clean Up at Rotary Park on May 11. Lincoln Rotarians & community members with help from members of the Rotary Club of St Catharines South picked up 59 kilos of garbage in 1.5 hours.
Lindsay - looking forward to meeting with Nour Hage and his Civiconnect team to discuss the development of an all-encompassing Lincoln Rotary marketing plan
David - for his three granddaughters; the 12-year-old loves to run the zero turn lawn mower
Terry - that his rib smoking skills are improving
Jennifer - for her honour as a Paul Harris Fellow and a wonderful celebration where she & her family & friends met wonderful people
Maria - for her new roof finally completed after six months in the making
Joanne - that Skye is home from Alaska and looking forward to volunteering with Rotary all summer
John M - for the heartwarming support his family felt as they celebrated the life & times of his step-mother, Margaret Maynard, on May 11 at Jordan Station United Church & Margaret A - for her opportunity to have known and worked with Margaret M as a fellow Rotarian and in her leadership role with Niagara West Adult Learning & Resource Centre.

Guatemala Trip (March 2024) in Review & Introduction to Global Grant 2024 Proposal
"SURVIVE TO THRIVE"

Margaret, Alice and Sue shared highlights of their amazing adventure in Guatemala (March 12-20). From their lodging in Antiqua Guatemala, they spent four full days visiting rural and remote communities located at high altitudes in the Western Highlands in Chimaltenango Department. The images included in their PowerPoint focussed on their experiences touring the Health Districts of Paquip & San Martin Jilotepeque where they met with physicians, nurses & other workers on site at several healthcare facilities. In San Martin Jilotepeque, they attended a monthly meeting of over 80 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) who serve in the surrounding communities.
.A full day was spent at the Nutrition & Early Child Development Centre in Paley Centro, a community of about 1000 people. There, we observed early years programming for the children of different age groups and their mothers or caregivers. Located in the Health District of Paquip, including 24 other similar communities, the development centre is a pilot project launched in February 2024. This is the area where 42 TBAs were trained with great success through our first Global Grant project.
You'll find a snapshot of the Nutrition & Early Child Development Centre in Paley at the link below.It is our hope that Lincoln Rotary will support the pre-application process required for a new Global Grant project that will see the expansion of the Paley model to neighbouring communities in Paquip Health District.
For Lincoln Rotary's first Global Grant Project (2020-22) involving comprehensive training for 84 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), the community assessment was completed and paid for by our partner International Needs Canada
For the “Survive to Thrive” Global Grant project, a community assessment must be completed and submitted to Rotary International for approval. Once the project is approved, Rotary International will assign a Global Grant Number and post the online application for completion and submission by the Rotary Club of Guatemala Sur as the host sponsor with support by the Rotary Club of Lincoln as the International Sponsor.
The cost for the assessment is approximately $15,000 USD. It is intended that this cost be split evenly among RCL, Rotary Club of Guatemala Sur and International Needs.
Rotary Club of Lincoln approval is required for the investment of $5000 USD to fund 1/3 portion of costs required for the community assessment. If the club agrees, the next step will be to reach out to the Rotary Club of Guatemala Sur and International Needs to confirm their contributions of $5000 USD each.
Once the community assessment is done and approved we can start the actual grant application process & explore funding opportunities.
