Program - Fishing Derby Planning

Our 2025 Fishing Derby Leaders:  Wendy Bagley - Derby Chair; Bill Kaik - Co-Chair

Bill Kaik will be the Derby Chair in 2026.

Wendy asks, "If you had to pick one thing you would change about the derby, what would it be?"
  • There wasn’t enough communication earlier about ticket sales so they could be utilized for Christmas presents. Vendors complained that they weren’t there early enough. Wendy suggests sending out an email blast in September, letting people know tickets are on sale in October. Bill reports that tickets are immediately sold whenever an email blast goes out, sometimes 300 at a time. We sold 4,500 tickets last year for a net of $70,000 this year.
  • Let people knowing the brochure and email blasts; they can win cash prizes even if they don’t fish.
  • We need to let the club know the budget details for the Derby so they understand the expenses.
  • We can reduce brochure printing by doing more email blasts. We can also sell tickets right up to the start of cash prize drawings.
  • Maybe not put a date on all the merchandise so we can sell it the following year.
  • Encourage design contests with schools. The winning design goes on merchandise. Proceeds can go to school for scholarships.
  • Perform more marketing at the hockey tournament and sell derby tickets. Offer free coffee or snacks. Focus on the prize money.
  • Kids fishing board. Bring in their fish and win tickets to Fun Spot or something similar.
  • In years past, we were questioned whether we were a derby or a game of chance. Do we need a dual license?
  • Online sales vs. mail. By mail, 450 tickets.
  • Do we get sponsorships to offset some of the expenses? Non-profits only can make sales at Heskey Park. Pepsi was a sponsor until someone got hurt and sued the derby and Pepsi.
  • Can we ask for donations along with the tickets? Or a donation bucket with proceeds going to us or Fish and Game? Maybe add a choice at the end of the ticket form for the donation amount?
  • Do we need to have three police on duty for the derby?
  • Can we add a choice for ticket purchasers on the form/website to cover the 3% credit card fee ($1.20 per $40 ticket)?
  • Put posters up in the summer and have tickets ready for sale.
  • To relieve pressure on Donna for data entry, we could potentially add a new position to enter paper tickets on Friday or Saturday night.
  • For weigh-ins, if the Rotarian accompanying the fisherman could check the Derby ticket and NH Fishing license, it would speed up the weigh-in process.
  • Wendy is looking at realigning the jobs and creating backup people for jobs.
  • Go out and do cash pick-ups from vendors more frequently.
  • Please send photos of Rotary members to Wendy about performing their volunteer duties.
We are awesome!

The meeting adjourned at 7:15 PM. President Wendy led us in the 4-Way test.
