President Betsey started with an amusing 'mystery incident' story that involved Ray Moritz; Craig Wiggins welcomed Art Ellis back to the Club; Richard Gerken spoke about the fine work being done by CASA volunteers (like himself and Bob Davis) who intervene as advocates for neglected kids. Richard offered information about a CASA of NH event on Saturday October 13, 2018 @ 3 PM, when a 1K 'race' will start at Prescott Park and finish at The Frog Rock on Main Street. Carl Johnson pledged participation but planned on starting and finishing at The Frog Rock! Carl also reminded members of the upcoming TIGER youth concert in Plymouth, starring his talented son Tim (who was terrific). Betsey was excited to announce that Mike's daughter was getting married! Bob K reported that his golf obligations were winding down and we could expect to see more of him; Ted Fodero was pleased to share anecdotes about his Improv program participation.

The Program

Bonnie Hunt introduced guest speaker Kevin Donovan, Chief Executive Officer/President, LRGHealthcare

Mr Donovan brings tremendous experience to his current assignment, and considering the array of challenges the hospital system faces, the arrival of his considerable talent is proving to be extremely timely and welcomed.

Considering that Medicaid/Charity constitutes a high 13% of the payer mix, LRGH faces major operational/ financial hurdles. When past physical plant expansion decisions were embarked upon, the magnitude of the problems were compounded. This situation is evidenced by a comparison of LRGH debt to 323 other hospital systems: the best 20% hospital systems carry 27% debt, the average hospital systems carry 34.9% debt, the bottom 5% systems carry 49% while LRGH currently carries 84%! Significant Birth Center cost over-runs led to a decision to partner with Concord Hospital moving forward as a Family Birth Place. LRGH will continue to provide prenatal and postpartum services locally while coordinating with Concord Hospital obstetricians for baby deliveries

The good news is that new LRGH leadership has been delivering strong, positive decisions which have clearly stopped the financial hemorrhaging and righted the LRGH ship. By focusing on the community's greatest needs: our community hospital is providing excellent general medical/surgical care, top rated emergency room care, in addition to Orthopaedic, psychiatric and outpatient services, while exploring Partnerships/Affiliations with others. In closing, Mr Donovan proudly pointed out that LRGH was awarded with Leapfrog's Hospital Safety Grade A level, as well as attaining a coveted Certified ISO designation.
