Mike gave fines to Dell and Art Clough for leaving us for far too long, but felt guilty and paid them (but then Art paid too!) He also fined Dave for the loud whistle that he asked Dave to use instead of the missing bell, which Dave thought hardly seemed fair, but Dave paid anyway. He also fined Vern because his son inherited Vern’s youth gene.
Ed is grateful for the service of our Veterans and asked them all to stand in honor of Memorial Day. The club thanked them with a round of applause. Dean had an enjoyable week in Nag’s Head with the kids and grandkids. Kevin’s team is bad at golf but great at winning raffles and they won an outing. Mike is happy that Kevin used the joke he gave him so that Mike could win and also for all of the hard work Heidi did as scholarship chair. Jim M. has a lot less nerve after he had a nerve removed from his foot and is happy that his sister had her last chemo treatment and that the tumor is just about gone. Ben sent out a dress code memo and is glad Mike got it.
CLUB ASSEMBLY
Betsey-Major Projects They are meeting tonight to discuss the pavilion and will report next week. Please bring any project ideas to the committee.
Dean-Rotary Youth Exchange Dean thanked his committee members for their work. Alex and Emmanuel has a successful year with excellent marks in school (though there was some struggle with English, but hey even we struggle with English.) Both played three sports and were very involved at school. Rick Goodby and David Reid were their counselors. Dell Clough is the counselor for Brianna Krauss who will be returning from Romania to major in Robotics. Will Williams is acting as a counselor to Nate. Dean is still looking for a host family…we are one short. Sending one short term student to Italy with Wendy as counselor. Thanks to Art and Dell for reviewing applications. The club thanked Dean and his committee for all of their hard work.
Rick Goodby-Four-Way Test Invitations are sent to Inter-Lakes High School and Moultonborough Academy though this year all four students came from ILHS. They were not screened in advance so no idea of what their topics would be or quality of speeches. Committee thinks they need to work with them in advance to improve quality. The winner is supposed to commit to go on to the semi-finals but did not go.
Bob Davis-Environmental Folks did a great job cleaning up after derby and some kids helped out as well. Hesky Park currently needs some attention. If anyone has any ideas for a project please let him know.
Heidi-Scholarship Heidi thanked the committee and reported that it was a difficult decision as all the applicants were high caliber. There were 26 applicants and $29,000 in scholarships were given out. 15 it ILHS and 11 to Moultonborough Academy. Six non-traditional scholarships were awarded for $4500 but only two had taken the money so far.
Gary Dehnel-Interact Rick Goodby and Brian are on this committee. Forty-one members but fifteen or so show up for the meetings. Next week is the joint meeting with Interact and he will save the report of their accomplishments for then. Rotary Foundation $3000 donated this year by members. Go to rotary.org to donate. 50% of money comes back to the district. Interact contacted Meredith Police to do a training session on the dangers of substance abuse with sixth graders “Too cool for drugs” ten-week program. $1000 from Interact and $1000 from a district matching grant. Interact will be assisting in the program.
