“The VEGA Project: Recognizing and Responding to Family Violence” Our Guest Speakers will be Dr. Harriet MacMillan and Dr. Melissa Kimber. This presentation will discuss the VEGA (Violence, Evidence, Guidance, Action) Project, which has created evidence-based guidance and education resources to assist healthcare and social service providers in recognizing and responding safely to family violence (child maltreatment and intimate partner violence). VEGA developed these resources with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) in collaboration with 22 national organizations. The resources are comprised of learning modules (e.g., care pathways, scripts, how-to videos), interactive educational scenarios and a Handbook. VEGA is being evaluated through the RISE (Researching the Impact of Service provider Education) Project, which involves eight professional organizations and the universities of McMaster, Toronto, McGill and Calgary (funded by PHAC). VEGA is free and publicly available: visit https://vegaproject.mcmaster.ca/ Speaker Biographies Dr. Melissa Kimber is a clinician-scientist. She is a registered social worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, and has undergraduate and graduate degrees in Social Work, as well as a Ph.D. in Health Research Methodology. Her research studies utilize qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research designs to: (a) understand experiences of violence and mental health challenges among children and adolescents; (b) support practitioners to safely recognize and respond to children’s mental health concerns and their exposure to violence; and (c) develop, implement and evaluate preventative interventions. Dr. Harriet MacMillan is a psychiatrist and pediatrician conducting family violence research. She is a member of the Offord Centre for Child Studies, a Distinguished University Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, and of Pediatrics at McMaster University with associate membership in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact. She holds the Chedoke Health Chair in Child Psychiatry. Harriet’s research focuses on the epidemiology of violence against children and women; she has led randomized controlled trials evaluating interventions to reduce child maltreatment and intimate partner violence and associated mental health impairment. |
