At this meeting we will also have a cheque presentation to Celeste Taylor, from Hamilton Food Share. Because our in person meetings have been cancelled since March, Club members have generously donated their breakfast fees to the club. A portion will go to Rotary International as a part of our committment to Polio Plus and the balance is being presented to Hamilton Food Share. Gustavo Rymberg is our guest speaker. His topic is "Holocaust Education without survivors and Antisemitism". Bio for Gustavo Rymberg Hamilton Jewish Federation’s CEO was born and raised in Argentina, but his Jewish professional journey began in Winnipeg. In 1997, Gustavo Rymberg, his wife Marisa, and their two young children were among the first Argentinian immigrants brought to that city under the Jewish community’s Grow Winnipeg initiative. Rymberg’s disillusionment with his country of birth dates back to 1994, when Buenos Aires’ Jewish Community Centre, known as the AMIA, was the target of a major terrorist attack in which 85 people were killed and hundreds injured. After a five-year stint in Ottawa as marketing and program director of that city’s JCC, and seven years in Toronto heading up marketing, programming, and revenue development for its two northern Jewish community campuses, Rymberg has achieved his lifetime goal |

“The VEGA Project: Recognizing and Responding to Family Violence” Our Guest Speakers will be Dr. Harriet MacMillan and Dr. Melissa Kimber. This presentation will discuss the VEGA (Violence, Evidence, Guidance, Action) Project, which has created evidence-based guidance and education resources to assist healthcare and social service providers in recognizing and responding safely to family violence (child maltreatment and intimate partner violence). VEGA developed these resources with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) in collaboration with 22 national organizations. The resources are comprised of learning modules (e.g., care pathways, scripts, how-to videos), interactive educational scenarios and a Handbook. VEGA is being evaluated through the RISE (Researching the Impact of Service provider Education) Project, which involves eight professional organizations and the universities of McMaster, Toronto, McGill and Calgary (funded by PHAC). VEGA is free and publicly available: visit https://vegaproject.mcmaster.ca/ Speaker Biographies Dr. Melissa Kimber is a clinician-scientist. She is a registered social worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, and has undergraduate and graduate degrees in Social Work, as well as a Ph.D. in Health Research Methodology. Her research studies utilize qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research designs to: (a) understand experiences of violence and mental health challenges among children and adolescents; (b) support practitioners to safely recognize and respond to children’s mental health concerns and their exposure to violence; and (c) develop, implement and evaluate preventative interventions. Dr. Harriet MacMillan is a psychiatrist and pediatrician conducting family violence research. She is a member of the Offord Centre for Child Studies, a Distinguished University Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, and of Pediatrics at McMaster University with associate membership in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact. She holds the Chedoke Health Chair in Child Psychiatry. Harriet’s research focuses on the epidemiology of violence against children and women; she has led randomized controlled trials evaluating interventions to reduce child maltreatment and intimate partner violence and associated mental health impairment. |
