No club meeting this morning, instead we are holding a Club Social at Pho Asparagus, one of the "new kids in town" in Hamilton's expanding restaurant scene. Our hosts will treat us to some complimentary appetizers with members responsible for drinks or food ordered. 2 weeks ago (a 5 Star rating!)
This week I made a second visit for a meal with friends. The staff are kind and make good recommendations for those not familiar with the menu. Like the other comments - delicious food, generous portions, great value and excellent service.

Mar. 04, 2020 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.
Hello, Rotary Club of Hamilton AM!
I am delighted to be your guest speaker. I will present on a very timely topic: a book about navigating the long-term care system with an elderly parent.
My sister Pat and I designed this book to help families find their way through what is often a very complex and frustrating bureaucracy.
It’s called: “Proactive and Prepared - The Indispensable Survival Guide to Ontario’s Long-term Care System: Practical tips to help you and your family”.
The book was inspired by a feature article that I wrote for The Spectator earlier this year after the passing of our Mom, Verna, in long-term care.
It was about our family’s journey through the system, and what a roller coaster ride it was.
Here’s a link to a version of the story in The Peterborough Examiner … (The Spec has a paywall up.)
I strongly - strongly - believe that many baby boomers are completely unprepared for the journey they will soon be going on
with their elderly parents. The long term care system is incredibly complicated and such a huge bureaucracy. We felt so ill informed, and ill equipped
to make the decisions we had to make for our Mom.
We’re expecting that the book should be released in October - or possibly early November.
I feel that my mission is to get this survival guide to everyone in Ontario who might benefit from it - and to help families so that they won’t have to struggle
the way ours did. My intention is to do a tour of Ontario, and to speak to as many baby boomers and seniors as I possibly can so that they can spread the word.
Speaker's Bio - Karen Cumming Karen Cumming is a freelance journalist, heath promoter and teacher who worked for years in local media at CHCH-tv and CHML Radio in Hamilton. She was a general reporter and a news producer on television, and a newscaster and talk-show producer on radio. Karen now loves to help people manage their stress. She writes about mindful living, meditation and self-care on her website, karencumming.com. She is also one of “The Mars 100” – 100 people from around the world who have made it to the final round of astronaut selection in a legitimate mission to colonize Mars. Her new book – co-authored with her sister – was written to make life on Earth less stressful for baby boomer children and their elderly mothers and fathers heading into long-term care. Karen Cumming

Cynthia Jansen and Marcel Mongeon from the Hamilton Tonic Club will present on their club's unique "Rotary Advisory Program". The Rotary Advisers Program Is your community organization the best it can be, or is something holding it back? Gain free, professional advice through Rotary Advisers, Hamilton’s newest Rotary outreach program. Whether your organization is brand new or has a long tenure, there may be governance, strategic or operational challenges that impact your team’s ability to deliver on the organization’s mission. Rotary Advisers is a team of experienced professionals who are members of, or affiliated with Hamilton’s newest Rotary Club – Tonic: Rotary After Five. What is Rotary Advisers? We can provide free, no-obligation advice on:
Please note, we strongly recommend that organizations we work with agree to discussions in all three areas because they are interlinked. The scope and focus of the project will be determined in the diagnostic meetings. What’s involved? To become a Rotary Advisers project, your organization must be willing to:
Frequently Asked Questions How long will we work together? It varies depending on the needs of the organization. Projects we have completed so far range from three months to one year. Will this mean a lot of extra work for my senior team and board? It will mean some focused time. You should expect a time commitment of approximately four to eight hours a month, understanding that some months will be more active than others. Rotary Advisers will be as flexible as possible on timing, and fitting into your existing meeting schedule. What are our obligations on receiving your professional advice? Acting on the recommendations of Rotary Advisers is at the discretion of the organization. It should be remembered that Rotary Advisers are not there to take on projects or carry out the recommendations – only to advise. We just finished a strategic plan. I don’t want to get into that again but I would like help with operations and/or resource development. We would expect that you at least provide us with an overview of the planning process and an understanding of how the strategic plan is influencing operational decision-making. Who will we be working with? The Rotary Advisers team is confirmed on completing the diagnostic of your organization, including the project scope and goals. It will be approximately three or four people from Tonic: Rotary After Five Club, or affiliated with the Club. Team members are chosen for their professional knowledge and experience in areas relevant to your organization. Interested? Find out more about Rotary Advisers by contacting Marcel Mongeon, Team Lead for Rotary Advisers, Tonic Rotary After Five: 905-390-1818 or marcel@mongeonconsulting.com. Tonic: Rotary After Five is part of Rotary International, a global service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services. Cynthia Janzen's bio Cynthia Janzen is a retired public relations and marketing professional. After beginning her career as a journalist she moved into PR in the health care field, at the former Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals where she was director of the PR Department. After many years as a consultant at a local agency she returned to the hospitals as Manager of Stakeholder Relations at Hamilton Health Sciences, a position she retired from last June. Cynthia is a long-time Rotarian, having served 15 years in the Rotary Club of Hamilton, after which she became founding President of Tonic: Rotary After Five in 2016. She remains very active in Tonic, particularly in its key project, Rotary Advisers. Marcel Mongeon is less well-known in Hamilton and local Rotary circles than he thinks he is. He has held so many different positions and jobs that people are starting to wonder if he can hold steady employment.
He currently acts as a mediator, and arbitrator and has recently been putting his online skills to work assisting members of the legal profession to get "online" for client consultations and other meetings. He is also the principal instructor of "easy CPD", a website business that provides training to lawyers.

At this meeting we will also have a cheque presentation to Celeste Taylor, from Hamilton Food Share. Because our in person meetings have been cancelled since March, Club members have generously donated their breakfast fees to the club. A portion will go to Rotary International as a part of our committment to Polio Plus and the balance is being presented to Hamilton Food Share. Gustavo Rymberg is our guest speaker. His topic is "Holocaust Education without survivors and Antisemitism". Bio for Gustavo Rymberg Hamilton Jewish Federation’s CEO was born and raised in Argentina, but his Jewish professional journey began in Winnipeg. In 1997, Gustavo Rymberg, his wife Marisa, and their two young children were among the first Argentinian immigrants brought to that city under the Jewish community’s Grow Winnipeg initiative. Deeply appreciative and impressed by the role played by the Jewish Federation in his family’s integration into Canadian life, Rymberg embarked on a career path that would take him, by way of Ottawa and Toronto, to Hamilton, where, as the leading Jewish professional in this community, he intends for Federation to have a similarly positive influence on Jewish life. Rymberg’s disillusionment with his country of birth dates back to 1994, when Buenos Aires’ Jewish Community Centre, known as the AMIA, was the target of a major terrorist attack in which 85 people were killed and hundreds injured. After a five-year stint in Ottawa as marketing and program director of that city’s JCC, and seven years in Toronto heading up marketing, programming, and revenue development for its two northern Jewish community campuses, Rymberg has achieved his lifetime goal |
