A Rotary Exchange Student’s Story – 45 years later - Krista Warnke

Krista's Bio

Krista is a proud Hamiltonian.  She grew up in the east end and still lives in the neighbourhood of her childhood.  She bought her family home (originally owned by her grandmother) and has been happily living there as an adult for more than 30 years.  Although she is no longer able to climb out of the bedroom window to shinny down the tree in her back yard, she does have fond memories of such athleticism.

Krista likes spending time at her trailer in Orillia, knitting, cooking (not baking – that is an art form she relinquishes to the talents of others).  She does not like green peppers, having her picture taken or talking about her accomplishments.

Krista has spent most of her professional career working in the not-for-profit sector, where dollars are scarce but passion prospers.  A 13-year volunteer position providing telephone support to rape survivors turned into twenty years of employment at the Sexual Assault Centre of Hamilton as a Public Educator.  The work fueled her passion for social justice and equality rights and resulted in Krista receiving a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and a Lifetime Achievement Award as a YWCA Woman of Distinction.

Krista currently works at United Way Halton & Hamilton as a Senior Manager, in the Individual Giving stream of Resource Development.
