Creation of the Cable TV Channel, the Weather Channel
Oct. 04, 2018 7:30 a.m.
The Weather Channel was the realization of a dream of one incredible man that became a shared vision of a large team of wonderful, courageous and talented individuals that assembled from all corners of the country in many different disciplines to undertake something special and unprecedented. We like to call these unique people the “Weather Channel Pioneers”. To pave that road to success in the early days, we pulled off everyday miracles, overcame many obstacles and changed the paradigms for technology, the delivery of life-saving information and on-air weather presentations all while informing and entertaining our viewers. It was a time and a team like no other. In this book, we immortalize that effort with their personal stories and memories of that incredible journey. |

Habitat for Humanity in the Greater Nashua Area
Dec. 13, 2018 7:30 a.m.
The purpose of Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity is to provide safe, decent and affordable housing in the southern New Hampshire towns we serve. We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that works to strengthen families and communities through affordable homeownership opportunities. We work in partnership with corporations, like-minded community groups, faith-based organizations, and individual volunteers to develop communities by building and renovating simple, decent, affordable homes with hard-working people who are in need. We partner with families whose income is above public housing guidelines and who are unable to qualify for conventional mortgages. Qualified families are given a hand up (not a hand out), and they pay a monthly no-interest mortgage to Habitat. These monies, in turn, go back into building more, simple, decent, affordable homes. Habitat is committed to developing and uplifting families and communities in addition to constructing houses. |

Work on the 2014–16 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa
Jan. 10, 2019 7:30 a.m.
Christine, of our own Hudson-Litchfield Rotary, worked on the 2014–16 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Liberia, and was a co-author on the paper entitled, "Establishing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) diagnostics using GeneXpert technology at a mobile laboratory in Liberia: Impact on outbreak response, case management and laboratory systems strengthening". The Paper describes a model of a mobile laboratory co-located at an Ebola treatment unit (ETU) equipped with GeneXpert molecular diagnostic platform and automated qRT-PCR test for Ebola virus disease (EVD). The laboratory contributed significantly to the EVD response in Liberia, including supporting surveillance, outbreak detection, contact tracing and management of confirmed cases. The laboratory was run by local laboratory technicians as opposed to international experts on short missions, making it a more sustainable option in prolonged outbreaks and early recovery phases. The redeployment and strategic placement of these GeneXpert instruments to complement EVD isolation facilities throughout the country has strengthened preparedness and response capabilities for future EVD outbreaks in Liberia. |
