WELCOME

President Bill Vermouth welcomed all to the August 30th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held at the American Legion in Brattleboro. (ED NOTE: President Bill improved his bell ringing skills but now needs to work on using the microphone). He introduced Avenue of Club Service Director Dave Twombly who welcomed everyone in perfect unison. Carl Lynde offered a meaningful invocation by quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“What is success? To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch Or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!”

This was followed by the pledge of allegiance.

As a luncheon of ham <ED NOTE: the streak of good lunches has been broken>, baked beans, macaroni salad, tofu, carrots, fried potatoes, salad, bread, and chocolate chip cookies for dessert was being digested, the meeting continued.

GUEST: Julianne Egan, Meg Donahue, and Visiting (Sunrise) Rotarian Lissa Weinmann (speaker)

TRIVIA QUESTION

Which US president made Labor Day a national holiday?
 (Answer below.)

JOKE OF THE WEEK

For our Rotary joke, Gary Goodemote humorously recounted how he is often mistaken for Ray Romano, a guy named Pete and another guy named Brian.  This sometimes can cause an identity crisis and difficulty getting approval to cash a check.

ROTARY MINUTE

For our Rotary minute, Jim Haine reminded us about how easy it is to make-up a missed meeting by visiting Rotary’s e-club.

At our August 6th meeting, Steve Gordon will tell a joke or lead us in song and Jody Haley will offer a Rotary Minute.

NOTE: 2018-19 weekly assignments are posted on club website.
