The Brattleboro Rotary Club awarded $12,000 in scholarships to six local high school students who will be attending college this fall, and honored past recipients at a special dinner hosted by Brattleboro Memorial Hospital on August 2, 2012. The scholarships are funded by The Gateway Foundation, a tax-exempt affiliate of the Brattleboro Rotary Club.

This year’s recipients, who each received $2,000, include: Kayla A. Farace of Jamaica, Krista A. Gay of Athens, Timothy D. Gringeri of Hinsdale, Moses R. Jaenson of Guilford, Melanie A. Smith of Hinsdale, and Soren A. Pelz-Walsh of Dummerston.

According to Scholarship Committee Chairman John Mabie, "We are happy to be able to offer these scholarships, and hope the assistance will help lead each student a step closer to his or her goals."

The Brattleboro Rotary Club established the Gateway Foundation in 1986 to create a fund to support scholarships awarded annually to local students pursuing college. The Foundation, which is a nonprofit and tax-exempt organization, has awarded over $400,000 in scholarships to area students. It is funded by Rotary Club and individual contributions, and is a local chapter of the National Dollars for Scholars program.

Applications are accepted each spring from graduating seniors at the following high schools: Brattleboro Union, Hinsdale, and Leland and Gray, as well as the Austine School. Criteria for the awards are academic achievement, financial need, and community service, all of which are weighed evenly.

Founded in 1950, the Brattleboro Rotary Club is an active community service club of 90 members. It engages in community and human service projects locally and internationally. The club has weekly meetings on Thursday at 12:15 p.m. Summer time meetings are at the Brattleboro Country Club and the fall, winter and spring meetings are at the VFW on Black Mountain Road in North Brattleboro. The public is welcome to attend meetings by contacting a Rotary member.
