2.) Rotary intentions for 2021-2022 year
Rotary International requires us to present our club list of Rotarians by the end of a
previous Rotary year – last day of June. We are asking all members of the Rotary Club of Grimsby to confirm their intentions to the club secretary, Marie, no later than June 20
th, 2021.
In the past, some members who did not return to our club did not make us aware of their intentions until into the new year. The result was that our club had to pay their RI and district fees even though those individuals were no longer part of the club.
Let’s make sure we do not have that unnecessary drain on our operating budget, and please confirm your intentions regarding membership in the 2021-2022 year with Marie as soon as you can.
3.) Dues for 2021-2022 year
The membership was advised your dues for next year will not be changing. They will
remain at $260 payable once by cheque or eTransfer or using the 2-payment method.
According to our constitution, the Board of Directors, through our Treasurer, will present the operating budget to the membership at our June 3rd meeting and a motion to vote on the budget will be presented. If you are unable to attend, please contact Secretary Marie to set up your proxy.
UPCOMING MEETING
Rotary Gives Back Locally – Upcoming meeting - June 3rd, 2021
Though we haven’t been able to generate as many funds to help the community as we might normally, we have helped out in a select manner, within our current means.
Some of the community recipients are joining us. Representatives from The FORT, The Grimsby Public Library, Rose Cottage and Gillian’s Place will give a short update on their programs and how we have helped.
Please continue our support of these wonderful organizations by letting them see you at our virtual meeting on June 3rd.
Seeing our friends at a distance - Last meeting of the year!
We need to see each other, at least at a distance, once during this 2020-2021 year of Covid-19. Here is what we are planning.
A See Rotary in Niagara Car Rally. We are still working out the details, but the general idea is to follow a ‘fun’ car rally route that will include two special features. 1) Seeing Rotary sponsored sites at various locations around the Niagara Peninsula (ie. parks, structures), as well as
2) drive by’s to wave and honk your horn to Rotarians from our past who can’t drive anymore but would love to see your smiling faces.
The event will take place on either our regular meeting night – Thursday, June 17th or another day or evening that suits the majority of club members (but before June 30th, 2021).
Other Rotary clubs, including our sister Rotary Club – Lincoln, have had successful car rallies, so we hope this will be a fun way to end a year of social distancing. We will be abiding by all government suggested distancing protocols in effect on the date of the event.
We would love to have you join the planning and marshalling team. Are you available and willing? We will have a meeting to discuss specifics over the June 5-6 weekend. Hope you can join us! Contact Liz at
evfisk5012@rogers.com to be added to the volunteer list.
MAY 20th MEETING
Paul Harris Fellow Recognitions
One of Rotary’s most well-known recognitions is the Paul Harris Fellow. The honour is bestowed on Rotarians and non-Rotarians who exemplify Rotary’s motto – Service
Above Self. The Rotary Club of Grimsby traditionally honors the recipients at a gala dinner, and they receive a special certificate, a gold pin, and a gold medallion on a blue-and-gold ribbon.
This year, the Rotary Club of Grimsby pivoted to an on-line virtual recognition event honouring three community members and one Rotarian. Over one hundred individuals, locally and from around the country, attended the event via Zoom.
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition event was a combination of pre-taped presentations and live testimonials and acknowledgments. Due to the lockdown, presentations were filmed separately and outside, ahead of the event. A video compilation of the recipients’ backgrounds and the community service they were being honoured for was edited by Grimsby Secondary School communication students. Both videos were played for each recipient and then the recipients had the opportunity to share their comments and thanks live on Zoom.
This year’s community recipients are Ken Boichuk, for his leadership with The Grimsby Author’s Series supporting the Grimsby Public Library; Tony Joosse, for his leadership in supporting the redevelopment of the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital; Bruce Mackenzie for his leadership in developing the former Biggar Sewage lagoons into the community-accessible Grimsby Biggar Lagoon Wetlands. Rotarian and Assistant District Governor for Area 5, Jeanette Murphy was honoured for her service in that role and her years of support to Rotary’s Youth Exchange program.
President Liz was the MC for the event and acknowledged the group effort necessary to produce such an event. The student videographers and editors, local volunteer video team members as well as the presenter, recipients and the Paul Harris Selection committee, Shirley, Wayne, George and Liz contributed to the event’s success. Thanks to Roger for the invocation.
These four individuals in their special ways have contributed to the high quality of life in Grimsby and the surrounding community. It is an honour for all Rotarians to recognize their accomplishments. Bruce, Jeanette, Ken and Tony have put community service above themselves, and we know the community will benefit from their commitment for years to come.
Link to presentations and background videos in the members only section of the website. Thanks to Mike Williscraft at News Now for profiling our recipients with an article.
