Vaccines Work For All

World Immunization Week (April 24-30) brings together a diverse coalition of partners to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease. Immunization saves millions of lives every year, and it is recognized widely as one of the world’s most successful and cost-effective health interventions. However, there are still nearly 20 million unvaccinated and under-vaccinated children in the world today.

Thanks to Bills and Melinda Gates Foundation your contribution to Rotary's Polio Plus Fund will be tripled.

Bob Gowans with the help Lois was the inspiration for the Fantasy of Trees which is now a firmly established community event, open to all free of charge. Proceeds from the raffle and auction are directed to local charities.  This event has been held for 20 straight years.

World Polio Day

Posted by Jim Howden on Oct 24, 2019
story-thumbnail
In support of World Polio day on October 24 a flag there was a flag raising at Town Hall.  Thanks to Mayor Jordon and Councillor Dunstall ( left of picture) and a group Rotarians for supporting the recognition.

Rotary has been working to eradicate Polio for more than 30 years and has helped to reduce polio cases by more than 99.9%. Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) are celebrating a major milestone this World Polio Day: confirmation that a second type of the wild poliovirus has been eradicated, which is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of a polio-free world.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), announced the historic feat in a video address during Rotary’s Global Online Update on 24 October. He said an independent commission of health experts certified the global eradication of the type 3 strain, which hasn't been detected anywhere in the world since Nigeria identified a case of polio that it caused in November 2012. The type 2 strain was certified as eradicated in 2015.

“That leaves just wild poliovirus type 1,” Tedros said. He also commended Rotary’s long fight against polio. “Everything you [Rotary] have done has brought us to the brink of a polio-free world.”

Tedros balanced the good news with a note of caution, saying that the biggest enemy of global eradication is complacency. He encouraged Rotary members to redouble their efforts.

Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries.

Breadfruit trees is one of the highest yielding food plants with a single tree producing up to 200 or more grapefruit-sized fruit and is a staple food in many tropical regions.

This is a wonderful project as these trees will improve the environment while providing food for a local population in a very poor country.

Mike Hahn- Migrant Farm Workers Project

Posted by Jim Howden
The speaker at our meeting on February 2nd was Mike Hahn who is very active with the Migrant Farm Workers Project which is operated out of St Albion Church in Beamsville.  The Migrant Farm workers is primarily directed at the 600 Spanish migrant workers that work on the surrounding farms and greenhouses but migrant workers from other countries are also assisted. The initial program focus was providing donated bikes to the workers so that they have a means of transportation. The bikes are refurbished before being provided ,together with helmets, bike lights and reflective vests, to the workers.  The program now offers suitable clothing to new arrivals, a volunteer driver pool, ESL training and other programs. Church Services are provided in Spanish and community Sunday night meals are provided together with transportation in order to address issues related to a feeling of isolation. The program receives considerable support from various local Partners and Sponsors.  The local farms and greenhouses are an important driver of the local economy and the positive impact that these workers contribute goes largely unnoticed.
In addition to being a passionate supporter of the Migrant Farmworkers Project Mike is a Rotarian . He was a member of this club for many years and is now a member of the Rotary club of Lincoln since relocating to Beamsville.
Pictured above is a group of volunteers unloading donated bikes for refurbishing.

World Polio Day October 24,2016

Posted by Jim Howden
story-thumbnail
Since 1985, Rotary has contributed nearly $1.2 billion and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries.    The disease remains endemic in three countries -- Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan -- although other countries remain at risk for imported cases.

A highly infectious disease, polio causes paralysis and is sometimes fatal.  As there is no cure, the best protection is prevention. For as little as US 60 cents worth of vaccine, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.  After an international investment of more than US$9 billion, and the successful engagement of over 200 countries and 20 million volunteers, polio could be the first human disease of the 21st century to be eradicated.

Polio crippled tens of thousands of Canadians until the Salk vaccine was introduced in 1955. Last known cases of Polio in Canada occurred in 1959.

Pictured here is our President presenting a cheque for $1,000 on behalf of the Club to Karen Oaks of Rotary Polio Plus at the Rotary District Conference on October 24,2016. Rotary donations for Polio eradication are matched 2 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The couples efforts in restoring the 220 year old Nelles Manor over 40 plus years and turning it over to a Trust for the enjoyment of future generations exemplifies the Rotary's Motto of "Service above Self". Both Barry and Linda Coutts  have been active in many community organizations since moving to Grimsby 50 years ago.

THE TEAMS ARE BACK FROM A FUNFILLED ADVENTURE TO MADISON WISCONSIN TO CURL AND SHARE THE FELLOWSHIP OF ROTARIANS FROM BOTH NATIONS.

The picture is a bit blurry but know it was taken by someone else other than our group but is recorded as another special moment in our clubs history.
The winning club was a Peterborough team that won on the last rock of the last end. Certainly a memorable moment and a ticket to Aberdeen Scotland this March to partake of the Rotary World Championship.
We have a team already enrolled and excited about the upcoming competition.

ClubRunner secures all your private information using the latest security technologies. Hosted in a world class data centre with redundant power, Internet backbones and 24/7 security and monitoring, you can rest assured that your club data is safe and protected. Your members' contact information is secured behind unique logins and passwords. Access to information is also restricted, for example, a member can only view the list of members, but can modify his or her own personal information.

Data on the server is protected by TCP/IP filtering, firewall and anti-virus software that protect against any unauthorized intrusion. Backups of data are made daily and stored off-site.
