This past week, I read an article in the New York Times that brought to mind a quote often shared by our Club’s Co-President, Jon Smoller: “80% of life (success) is showing up,” originally attributed to Woody Allen. The article, written by Melissa Kirsch, explores the significance of follow-through and discusses how, “it has become a common comedic refrain among busy people of my acquaintance to declare how much they love it when someone cancels plans.” She includes a quote from Jon Mulaney: “Percentagewise, it is 100 percent easier to not do things than to do them. And so much fun not to do them! Especially when you were supposed to do them.”

 

Within our Rotary Community, showing up is at heart of what we do—it is the cornerstone of building a true community. Consistency is the foundation upon which success is built. When we show up, even if we lack motivation or results are slow to materialize, we show our dedication to the cause. Through regular attendance at meetings, participation in service projects, and ongoing engagement, our Club can improve and grow. By being present, regardless of the circumstances, we open the door to fellowship, networking, and gradual progress toward our shared goal of serving our communities.

 

Take, for example, athletes, artists, or professionals who excel in their fields. Their accomplishments are rarely the result of one extraordinary moment. Rather, they are the product of relentless practice, preparation, and the commitment to show up—even when it would have been easier to give up. Real success is like running a marathon — it is reached by individuals who stay determined, advancing steadily and consistently with each stride.

 

Ultimately, showing up is about embodying the qualities of commitment, reliability, and perseverance. Success tends to favor those who are present, who keep pushing forward, and who understand that achievement comes from steady effort. By consistently showing up, we lay the groundwork for future success, build meaningful relationships, and prove that greatness is achieved through small reliable actions. On the journey to success, choosing to be present is often the most powerful step we can take.
