🕊️ President's Message

🍎 One Bad Apple Spoils the Bunch 🍏

We all know the proverb: one bad apple spoils the bunch. A reminder that when harmful behavior goes unchecked, its influence spreads. In Rotary, this raises an important question: when concerns arise, are we dealing with a systemic issue — or simply an individual whose conduct is affecting the whole.

This matters - when we hesitate to hold individuals accountable, the problem inevitably becomes systemic. Silence allows frustration to grow. Culture begins to shift. And members become reluctant to speak up — not because they lack courage, but because they fear social consequences, misunderstandings, or being labeled as disruptive.

Rotary’s strength has always come from compassion, community, and principled leadership. Yet within our ranks, there are individuals who thrive on division. Their hostility is not rooted in service; it is rooted in self‑glorification. When this behavior is protected instead of corrected, the entire bunch is at risk. Research shows that:

Division gives people a sense of power

Conflict creates an instant hierarchy: us vs. them. For certain personalities — especially those who are experiencing insecurity — stirring division gives them influence. They become the “voice” of a group, even if that group exists only because they created the conflict.

  • Division is a fast way to gain followers.

  • It creates emotional intensity, which feels like momentum.

  • It lets someone position themselves as a protector or truth‑teller.

Rotary is uniquely structured to fix this because its culture, governance, and mission already favor unity — we just have to activate them intentionally.

One bad apple can spoil the bunch. One courageous voice can preserve it.

Onward!
