I graduated in 2014 from the Doctor of Dental Surgery program at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC.  During my time in dental school, I established my continued interest in dental surgeries and humanitarian work through various school-related clubs, organizations, and volunteer clinic service.  It was through these moments I was given the opportunity by Dr. Kyle Stanley’s recommendation to attend the Federal University of Santa Catarina’s Post-Doctoral Specialization in Dental Implantology Program in Florianopolis, Brazil.

As a Rotary Global Scholar Grant recipient, I will attend the Federal University of Santa Catarina-Brazil’s prestigious dental implant program, and through the host club, Rotary Florianopolis-Trinidade, I will be able to create and sustain a local community project: The Smile Project.  My hope is to design an afterschool program focusing on literacy and health.  Through having young children and adolescents write and illustrate their own health-based books and promoting dental hygiene through education and toothbrush give-away programs, I hope to create and sustain a project that generates and sustains long lasting health for the residents of Florianopolis, Brazil.  Without the Rotary Foundation’s endless global support system of local community-based Rotary Clubs, these transformative experiences would not have happened.  Please follow my story further, via my website and blog:  www.ecosmiles.org.
