With five club members and five guests participating, the cleanup of the Sunnynook Footbridge site was a successful and satisfying event.

Club members Peter Lattey, Kathleen Copus, Jon Smoller, and Alex and Ginny Brideau brought guest volunteers and got down to work picking up trash that had gathered in this soft-bottom region of the Los Angeles River located just south of Los Feliz Boulevard. Among the litter found were beer bottles, caution tape, a mangled shopping cart, and way too many cigarette butts and plastic bags.

In addition to helping with the cleanup, kids were given the opportunity to create watercolor paintings. REI and the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council had booths set up to provide information and giveaways.

While the flood walls of the channel are coated in smooth or textured concrete, the river bottom itself is full of rocks, trees, plants and other vegetation. Additionally, several different species of birds call this area home. Cleaning up the river helped clean their environment and helped Rotary move a small step closer to one of its goals: clean water for all.
