About the Speaker:
The Ambassadorial Scholarship Jean received allowed her to research reading and deafness and receive her Master's Degree from Nottingham University in England. Not only has Jean been teaching reading skills to deaf children from preschool through Grade 12, but she also coordinated a grassroots effort that led to the passage of state-wide Nevada legislation making testing of hearing mandatory before a baby leaves the hospital. Nevada's ranking moved from 36th to 8th in the US for children tested at birth for hearing loss in just two years after this bill passed, resulting in the early intervention that is so critical to language development. Jean has received many accolades for her work including the 1992 International Reading Association "Reading Teacher of the Year," the 2004 Reno Gazette Journal "Best of Education," and the 2009 Rotary International "Service Above Self" awards.
