Stories
September is Foundation month. This is the time of year when all good Rotarians pull out their checkbooks and make a contribution to the Rotary Foundation. The Foundation has two goals for fundraising, at least $100 per Rotarian and something from every Rotarian. Last year our per capita contribution was $219 and every member contributed something. This was most impressive. |

Joseph Raymond Lucero was born in 1977 in San Diego. A third-generation gang member whose parents, brothers, and uncles also struggled with heroin addiction, Joey Ray’s troubles with the law began at the age of nine. He was in youth detention and later California state prison for twelve of his first 26 years.
When his son was born while he was in state prison, Joey made the decision to stop gang-banging. He became active with the 12-step program Criminals and Gangmembers Anonymous (CGA), which became foundational to his efforts to leave his former life behind.
In 2003 Joey was released on parole and had the opportunity to prove that he could make it as a father and contributing member of the community. Father Greg Boyle offered him a job at Homeboy Industries, and he utilized his CGA experience to do outreach and speaking for Homeboy that change is possible. Through telling his story, Joey has been able to help bring awareness to the issues facing the formerly incarcerated.
Joey Ray made his acting debut in the 2006 film Gridiron Gang. He was featured in the 2007 documentary Fr. G and the Homeboys. He has appeared in episodes of the television series ER, The Shield, Cold Case, Criminal Minds, and Shameless. CLEAN WATER FOR KENYACLEAN WATER FROM ROTARY FOR KENYA By Lorine Parks, IMAGE Senior Correspondent/Rotary Club of Downey (Originally published in Rotary District 5280 December 2016 Newsletter) As every Southern Californian knows, there is nothing more beautiful than rain water.
For the past five years, The Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles has been working to provide a reliable source of clean rainwater to the students at four schools and a medical dispensary at the Osongo Primary School in Migori, Kenya. Up to now the community had gotten water from a nearby creek at the bottom of a small valley. This water is not clean and in the dry season it is difficult to find.
Four years ago, the president of the Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles, Peter Lattey, received a plea for help from the President of the Rotary Club of Migori, Kenya, which he posted on the club’s Facebook page. The Migori club was failing and he needed some advice. After some discussion it was decided that the club should find a service project that would raise their profile in the community. Thus was born this WASH (water and sanitation) project. Now the power of Rotary clubs, joining forces, is bringing water to schools and a clinic in Kenya. With Rotary International’s Global Grants of $41,000 in 2013/14 and a $48,000 grant in 2014/15, the project has directly impacted over 1,500 students and hundreds of patients at the clinic. It also affected the families of all the students. Enrollment jumped. Absenteeism due to disease fell..
This part of Kenya gets plenty of rain twice a year, but the groundwater is often of poor quality. The best solution to the water issue at the schools is to collect rainwater from the iron roofs of the schools and store it in above ground tanks. Under the grants, schools receive two, 10,000 liter tanks, a hand wash station and a two door, wheelchair accessible
latrine.
Rotary provides the tanks, the plumbing and any skilled labor. The community digs the 25 foot deep latrine and provides the bricks for the latrine. They also provide materials for the base of the tanks and unskilled labor. This initial project is the result of a year-long collaboration between Peter Lattey and Ben Onam, the past president of Suna Migori Rotary Club.
Ten clubs in District 5280, District 5280, the Slinger Allenton Club, District 9212 in Kenya and the Suna-Migori Club all contributed funds. The Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles contributed $1,690, and LA 5 contributed $1,500.
As soon as the tanks were in place, school attendance and enrollment increased, girls were not missing as much school and the students were spending more time in class. At the clinic they will have more water and they will install a shower for the birthing mothers.
Now a Past President of Downtown Los Angeles Club, Peter has made several trips to assist with the construction and to audit the completion of the project.
“An important benefit of this project, “he says, “is the improvement of the educational opportunities for the girls of Osingo. By having a clean source of water at the schools, the girls will be having a clean source of water at the schools and the girls will be relieved of the task of walking miles every day to get water. They will instead be able to spend that time in school becoming better educated.”
“When you educate a girl, you have educated the whole community.” Numerous studies have shown that educating girls and young women is a critical factor in economic and social development. “This source of clean water will help curb water borne diseases and help eliminate school dropout by girls,” Peter says. The new toilets will also provide a critical facility for the young women to enable them to attend school during their menses.
“After the success of the first Global Grant,” says Peter, “we decided to expand the project into a four phase program with each phase being a project of about 8 schools in a Rotary year. Phase 3 and 4 will be in 2016/17 and 2017/18 At the end of this time we will have provided clean water and sanitation facilities to over 15,000 students in 28 rural schools and at least two rural clinics in Migori Kenya.”

Skid Row Tour with “Angel Cop” Deon Joseph On August 20, 2016, Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles members were given the rare opportunity to tour Skid Row with Los Angeles Police Department Officer Deon Joseph, also known as the “angel cop.”
Officer Joseph has been with the LAPD for nineteen years, with seventeen of those years in the Skid Row community. His approach goes beyond the typical image of policing and focuses on the development of personal relationships with those he serves. He has sponsored outreach programs such as mentoring for children, education safety and self-defense seminars for women, and providing hygiene kits along with drug, housing, and job program information. On a typical day, he is on foot beat, talking to people, providing them with basic needs such as toothpaste, soap, lotion, and information on how to apply for housing vouchers.
Some of the surprising things members learned on the tour were Officer Joseph’s observations on well-meaning donations by the public directly to those living on the streets such as tents, food, and clothes as actually being counterproductive. He said that tents promote illegal activity as the space becomes “hidden.” Regarding food, he mentioned that the missions provide enough free meals to serve the population and providing food on the street creates difficulties with drug dealers prevalent all over the area. Free clothes he warned would end up being sold for drugs.
What he sees as the greatest needs in Skid Row are for additional housing, decentralizing homeless services to other parts of the city so Skid Row becomes less concentrated with those who prey on the homeless, and adjustments to some of the laws that most affect the homeless population.
All were reminded of the dire situation in the neighborhood when Officer Joseph was unable to conduct the full tour as there had been an outbreak of the synthetic drug “spice” in the neighborhood the day before where 50 people were hospitalized and the air was still contaminated a day later. Member Brenda McCabe, a recent transplant to Los Angeles commented: “I learned that homelessness is a result of a complex relation between drugs and crime and victims. I was appalled that this is happening literally in our backyard.” President-elect Louise Oliver, who has for many years served on the board of the Shelter Partnership, offered her reflections on how to combat the homelessness issue: “....no simple solutions, but we need to keep the focus and pressure on.”

Happy Holidays! On December 17, Rotary DTLA joined with friends at the historic Taix Restaurant for our annual holiday celebration. Past District Governor Vickie Radel reminded us in her toast of the beauty of Rotary, which welcomes all no matter what religion or creed we subscribe to - an important reminder during these festive days amidst a world in great need of the hope Rotary brings for peace, understanding, and global fellowship.
As we closed our gathering amidst laughter and gratitude we exchanged white elephant gifts - where the various gifters explained what significance their various objects had to Rotary - some more obvious than others, some downright obscure, but all deeply meaningful!! Holding the flower vase he received, new member Joe Chauvapun quoted the "Object of Rotary," drawing our attention to the important bonds that bind us together.
As we look towards 2016 and all the grand possibilities that await, all of us at the Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles send our best wishes to all during this holiday season and throughout the new year!

Kenya Africa Osingo Water Project is Getting Wetterby Peter Lattey, Past President, Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles The power of Rotary clubs joining forces is bringing water to schools and a clinic in Kenya. The Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles, has spearheaded a project to provide a clean reliable source of water and clean latrines for four schools and a clinic near Migori, Kenya, led by Peter Lattey. This project is the result of a year long collaboration between Peter Lattey and Ben Onam, the past president of Suna Migori. Ten clubs in District 5280, District 5280, the Slinger Allenton Club, District 9212 in Kenya and the Suna-Migori Club all contributed funds. The Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles contributed $1,690, and LA 5 contributed $1,500. This project will provide clean water to the 1,450 students who attend four schools in Osingo, Kenya and to the Ayego Clinic and will benefit many of the 5,000 families who live in Osingo. The Osingo Primary School currently gets water from a nearby creek at the bottom of a small valley. This water is not clean and in the dry season it is difficult to find. The students are the carriers, who must spend time fetching water when they should be in school. This source of clean water will help curb water borne diseases and help eliminate school dropout by girls. An important benefit of this project is the improvement of the educational opportunities for the girls of Osingo. By having a clean source of water at the schools, the girls will be relieved of the task of walking miles every day to get water. They will instead be able to spend that time in school becoming better educated. Numerous studies have shown that educating girls and young women is a critical factor in economic and social development. When you educate a girl, you have educated the whole community. The new toilets will also provide a critical facility for the young women to enable them to attend school during their menses. This $40,000 project is in progress and will be completed by the end of November 2014. The Suna-Migori Club has delivered ten 2,500 gallon tanks, built two concrete towers, poured concrete slabs, placed the tanks on the slabs and installed roof gutters. The parents and students are digging the 20-feet deep latrines. Downtown Los Angeles Club Past President Peter Lattey is travelling to Migori in the middle of October to assist with the construction and to audit the completion of the project. Rotary Clubs and Rotarians, working together CAN make the world a better place. |
Update from Kenya by Past President Peter LatteyIt has been a week now since I arrived jet lagged and weary in Migori Kenya. It has all been good so far. My Rotary friends in Migori have been great hosts. In fact everyone in Kenya has been friendly, helpful and a delight to deal with. Lots of happy kids. I am the tall guy in the middle of the mob. |
Messages from the Field: Our 2014-2015 Global Grants ScholarsMORGAN CURTIS I am currently studying Peace, Conflict and Development at Universidad Jaume I (UJI) in Castellón de la Plana, which is the UNESCO Chair in Philosophy of Peace. My international cohort is an excellent match for my interest in diverse cultures. While obtaining my undergraduate degree in Film Production at the University of Southern California from 2010 to 2014, I traveled to over 40 countries - mostly in the developing world. While I was traveling, I focused a great deal of my attention on photography, filmmaking, and cultural immersion. During this time, I became more informed about politics in the “global village” and the difficulties faced by workers in the field of international aid. The master’s program at UJI will afford me the opportunity to combine my media skills with my knowledge of the international aid community. In addition, I am developing a community development platform that will support Sub-Saharan African refugees and immigrants living in the communities of Castellón and Valencia. My project here in Spain will be enhanced by my experience with photography, journalism and filmmaking. I look forward to sharing my work with the Rotary Club of Castellón as well as those of you back in the United States. |

Vision Screening Opportunity Thursday 1/23/14 at Para Los Ninos ES
RCDTLA is supporting Vision To Learn with a $250 donation as part of a larger Reverse Grant Project. In addition, we have an opportunity to do hands on volunteer work (vision screening for the kids) on Thursday, January 23 between 8:30 am – 2:30 pm at Para Los Ninos Elementary School at 1617 E 7th Street, Los Angeles 90021 (downtown LA). Spanish speakers especially helpful. Club member Angela Fisher has committed several volunteers already. Contact RCDTLA President Kathleen Copus (Kathleen@rotarydtla.org) or Rotarian and VTL Coordinator Nora Maclellan (310-489-0160 cell) to sign up. Remember to wear your Rotary!
Vision To Learn (www.VisionToLearn.org) began operations in March of 2012. Since that time they have provided over 12,300 free eye exams and over 9,300 free prescription eye glasses to elementary aged children enrolled in Title 1 schools and or living in the low income communities in the Los Angeles Area. This month they began operations in Sacramento. Students with vision problems tend to have lower academic performance as measured by test scores and grades. Low income and minority students are disproportionately affected by untreated visual impairments. From a recent outcome study conducted by UCLA on Vision To Learn it was found that having corrected vision children almost immediately are:
· More confident and have better classroom participation,
· Improved attention and classroom behavior,
· Improved academic performance, and
· More ease with homework.

Ginny's Favorite DTLA BlogsBesides getting quizzed about my favorite iPad applications (aka apps), I'm often asked how I find out about the projects that I don't work on, or what's the next big neighborhood development. Speaker for Thursday May 16 2013Join us this Thursday to meet and hear from Carmen Applegren of the Braille Institute. Carmen began losing her eyesight at an early age, yet she didn’t let it stop her from doing the things she loved: riding her bike, skiing, playing tennis, baton twirling and ice skating. When her next love turned out to be show business, she was no less intimidated. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Michigan State University, she acted, sang and danced her way through a successful career in theater. Like so many of her peers, her love eventually brought her to Los Angeles. But as her vision diminished further, so did her ability to pursue her acting career. She came to Braille Institute in 1986 as a student. Before long she became an enthusiastic volunteer, teaching her fellow students how to tap dance. Carmen worked for Braille Institute in Los Angeles as Community Relations coordinator for 21 years. She now has her own business doing technical advisement with the Entertainment Industry teaching actors how to portray a blind person. It should be a memorable evening!

November 10, 2012 - Planting at Mama Hill's HelpPresident Peter Lattey message to Rotarians and friends: The pumpkins are ripe and the weather is getting cooler (well maybe). At this time of year, in most of the country people are getting their snow blower tuned up and cleaning up their snow shovels. BUT, in southern California, we get ready for our fall vegetable planting. We can plant lettuce, kale, brussel sprouts, cool weather tomatoes, and carrots at this time of year for harvest throughout our "winter". (And yes we will be planting broccoli. One of the unique things about broccoli is that when you cut the main head off, it continues to grow secondary heads down the stalk. This is different from caulliflower which only grows one head. Bet you didn't know that did you?) So on Saturday, November 10 at 9:00 AM we will go over to Mama Hill's and pull old plants and weeds, dig, rake, mulch, fertilize, and plant. Some of her students will be there to help and to learn how to pull old plants, dig, rake, mulch, fertilize, and plant. So plan on packing up your kids and plan to be there. This will also give you a chance to admire the storage shed we built for her with several other Rotary Clubs in District 5280. Please RSVP to Peter Lattey at 310-968-3252 or peter@rotarydtla.org. |

Virginia will address why the subject area of Women Studies was created in the 1970's at the universities, how women war correspondents are a good example of why there is such a subject area, and Caroline Severance - who she was, and why she is important in American history. It should be an informative and entertaining talk - hope to see you there!

She spoke two weeks ago at the PETS (Rotary President Elect Training Seminar). Of the many speakers there she was the best and received a well deserved standing ovation. There wasn't a single person in the audience of 700 who wasn't deeply moved. We will be presenting her with a check on behalf of the incoming Presidents Elect from District 5280. It is planting time at Mama Hill's Garden! (DATE UPDATED!)The garden we planted last August at Mama Hill's Help was a great success. It produced a bumper crop of tomatoes, corn, strawberries, basil, peppers and beans with a few cucumbers and even one lonely watermelon. Mama Hill's kids learned about gardening and there was plenty of food to go around. For most of the kids, this was their first opportunity to grow something and to eat fresh, organic vegetables. They loved it. But, seasons pass and the crops were finished. Now it is time to replant for the next growing season. Come Join Us!

Holiday Reunion Party, this Thursday, December 15!
Be there!

Christmas Clothes for SheltersTruth be told, I likely hankered for clothes at Christmas as much as my 20-year-younger brother hankered for my gift to him at Christmas: books. I even caught his and his even younger sister’s complaint that “all you get from Jesse is…blah, blah, blah.” Well, I was in college then and had learned the staying power of books over that of a plastic Prince Valiant sword—hey, light sabers weren’t yet on the horizon. And by the time I understood what Rotary is—and this just recently—I’d learned the value of clothes for Xmas or, if you’re poor, any other time of year. So, at the request of Ruth Schwartz, Executive Director of Shelter Partnership, Inc., on a brisk, December 3rd morning about ten Downtown LA Rotarians joined about 20 folks from other organizations to re-pack huge bins of brand new manufacturers' overruns and surplus clothing into manageable boxes destined for needy people throughout Los Angeles. Rotarian’s tinny-boppers even got into the act by taping boxes together and counting the articles deposited within. It was three hours of pretty intense work well organized and supervised by Ms Schwartz and her staff who kept the forklifts of new clothes coming as we sorted, cut off labels and gently folded men’s, women’s and children’s gifts that I’m confident will prove more useful than even a--finally invented, thank goodness-- plastic light saber and as cherished as a worn copy of Oliver Twist.

Messages from the Field: Our 2014-2015 Global Grants ScholarsDR. BRENDAN R. VAHEY, DDS I graduated in 2014 from the Doctor of Dental Surgery program at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC. During my time in dental school, I established my continued interest in dental surgeries and humanitarian work through various school-related clubs, organizations, and volunteer clinic service. It was through these moments I was given the opportunity by Dr. Kyle Stanley’s recommendation to attend the Federal University of Santa Catarina’s Post-Doctoral Specialization in Dental Implantology Program in Florianopolis, Brazil. As a Rotary Global Scholar Grant recipient, I will attend the Federal University of Santa Catarina-Brazil’s prestigious dental implant program, and through the host club, Rotary Florianopolis-Trinidade, I will be able to create and sustain a local community project: The Smile Project. My hope is to design an afterschool program focusing on literacy and health. Through having young children and adolescents write and illustrate their own health-based books and promoting dental hygiene through education and toothbrush give-away programs, I hope to create and sustain a project that generates and sustains long lasting health for the residents of Florianopolis, Brazil. Without the Rotary Foundation’s endless global support system of local community-based Rotary Clubs, these transformative experiences would not have happened. Please follow my story further, via my website and blog: www.ecosmiles.org.

Sept. 18: CardborigamiJoin us for our regular meeting this Thursday, September 18th, at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Our speaker will be Tina Hovsepian, a designer and philanthropist. Tina graduated from the University of Southern California with her Bachelors of Architecture in 2009. She currently works on global commercial architecture with Callison in Santa Monica, CA. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Tina always had a consuming interest in humanitarian causes, especially the plight of the homeless on Downtown’s infamous Skid Row. During her time at USC she had the opportunity to synthesize this interest with her architectural studies. In 2007 she designed and built a prototype of a temporary shelter made of folded cardboard, Cardborigami. Tina received Second Prize for Most Innovative at the 2009 USC Undergraduate Symposium for Creative Work. That was the first time an Architecture student had won an award in this school-wide category. Currently, Tina has undertaken the ambitious task of starting a non-profit while pursuing her career in Architecture. This has proven to be a challenging yet educational effort. Despite the lengthy journey to fruition, Cardborigami continues to receive overwhelmingly positive feedback for its ingenuity. Within months of public exposure, Hovsepian’s shelter raised interest from 92 different countries, is featured on CNN, the LATimes and KTLA. Rotary Youth Exchange VisitOn Aug. 7, Rotary DTLA members Jennifer Usyak and Angela Fisher led 11 Rotary Youth Exchange students on a tour of downtown. The group included five students visiting from Japan, Spain, and the United Kingdom and the six host family students from District 5280. Courtesy of the Midnight Mission van, the students next moved on to Olvera Street, then to Chinatown for lunch at Ocean Seafood Restaurant for dim sum, followed by a short walking tour of Little Tokyo. The highlight for many of the students was the visit to the Midnight Mission later that afternoon. After a brief tour of the facility to learn about its work as a drug and alcohol rehab center, the students got busy in the kitchen helping Chef Chris prepare and serve the evening meal. Many commented later that it was an eye opening experience for them. The day ended at the Rotary DTLA meeting at the LA Athletic Club. Guest speakers Sally and Jonathan Tiongco, educators and owners of Six Taste Culinary Tours gave an inspirational talk about their vocation as educators linking the five tastes (bitter, sour, salty, sweet, and umami) with their careers and their passion project Six Taste. A long day came to a happy end, and several of the students presented Rotary flags from their home districts for the traditional flag exchange at the end of the meeting! Rotarian and Law Intern in Need of a 2 Month HomestayRotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles Charter Member Tina Olson received the following request recently: "Dear Tina, I am a member of a Finnish Rotary club in Turku, Finland (Turun linna). I am a 27 year old Finnish girl and currently working as a lawyer. I will do an internship in a law firm in LA this fall (from 28th of Octorber until Christmas). The law firm is Clark & Trevithick and it is located at Los Angeles Downtown Office 800 Wilshire Blvd., 12th Floor Los Angeles, CA 90017 I was wondering if I could ask your rotarymembers if a family could host me during my stay. I am very outgoing, social and love to do any kind of sports on my free time and also enjoy cooking. Also movies are close to my hearth. I would be happy to help around in the house. I am willing to help with the garden/cooking, you name it :) I have travelled in the States also before and a couple of years ago I did an internship in Chicago and fell in love with American culture. I am eager to get to know Californian people. I have had some visitors from Chicago in Finland and I would be happy to host my Californian host-family in the future if they decide to travell to Finland. And I do not smoke. Tina, do you think you could ask around? As I am coming pretty soon I hope you could reply as soon as possible. Have a great day, Sincerely Krista Siro" If anyone is able to host Rotarian Krista this Fall, please contact Kathleen Copus, DTLA Club President, at kathleen@rotarydtla.org or 310-722-9779. Thanks.

Downtown Los Angeles - Community Service and FellowshipThis is how the Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles does community service and fellowship. On Sunday, September 15, Peter Lattey gathered up a crew of our Rotary Club members and Mama Hill's "cookies", to weed, plant, and generally refresh Mama Hill's garden. What a sight to see - Rotarians Peter, President Kathleen with daughter Bryce, Brando, Jennifer and Aaron, all in bright yellow "Downtown LA Rotarians at Work" t-shirts, getting down and dirty prepping, planting and watering peppers, peas, beans and more.
On Sunday, September 8, Peter put on his captain's cap and sailed out of Marina del Rey with more of Mama Hill's kids and DTLA Rotarians Mina, new member Kelly, and several other friends and prospective members for a day of adventure. A good time was had by all. Watch for more opportunities to join the Downtown LA Rotary Club in helping to improve communities and enjoy fellowship of other service-minded volunteers! |

Japanese Rotary Youth Exchange VisitFive Japanese high school students from Districts 2550 (Tochigi) and 2620 (Shizuoka/Yamanashi) visited the Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles at their dinner meeting Aug. 15, after a day-long tour of downtown sites led by club members Jennifer Usyak and Brando Parada. The students gave lively self introductions (with two clad in traditional Japanese yukata) and club members enjoyed hearing their impressions of the local area. The day began at Olvera Street, followed by a visit to the Japanese American National Museum and a walking tour of the colorful murals of the neighboring Arts District. We were proud to share the rich cultural heritage of our city with the visiting students! District 5280's youth exchange program with Japan began in 1960 and resumed this year after a two-year hiatus after the March 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami, under the leadership of Past District Governor and Club Advisor Vicki Radel. The Japanese students returned to Japan on Aug. 18 after three weeks of homestays and sightseeing. Their visit to our district had been preceded by the visit of four students from our district to Japan. The nine students formed invaluable friendships and deepened their international understanding. Many remarked it was a life-changing experience, and judging by the tearful farewell at LAX, were not ready for it to end! The Rotary Club of Downtown Los Angeles was thrilled to be a part of this special exchange!

The virtue of small changeAs November is Rotary Foundation Month, the following article
by John Conroy
is reprinted from Rotary International website:
Everyone remembers the horrifying December 2004 tsunami. But what few people know – because almost no media reported this fact – is that nearly half of total relief donations worldwide, $2.78 billion, came from ordinary U.S. citizens. Celebrities and big corporations got press, but not these individual small donors, most of whom gave less than $50. |
