Rotary Club Meeting Recap – July 7, 2026

This week, our club welcomed Jamie Ross, owner of Jamie Ross Photography, who shared her passion for photography, storytelling, and creating meaningful artwork that celebrates individuals and families.
Jamie described herself first and foremost as a connector of people. In addition to owning her photography business, she serves as the Minister of Connections at Marion Methodist Church, is a wife and mother of three teenagers, and has spent more than 25 years behind the camera.
Photography has been part of Jamie's life since childhood. Her father was a lifelong photographer who introduced her to the craft through film photography, darkrooms, and photojournalism. Jamie shared several personal stories and photographs that illustrated the lasting impact family portraits can have across generations, including treasured images of her father before his passing.
Today, Jamie specializes in family and high school senior photography, focusing on what she calls "making families feel famous at home." Rather than simply delivering digital files, her goal is to create heirloom-quality artwork that families can display and enjoy for years to come. She emphasized that printed portraits become daily reminders of family connections, love, belonging, and life's important milestones.
Jamie walked members through her three-step client process:
- Consultation – Meeting with clients to understand their goals, discuss clothing, locations, and identify where artwork will be displayed in the home.
- Creation Session – A relaxed photography experience designed to capture authentic personalities and meaningful stories.
- Presentation and Artwork Design – Helping families select images and visualize finished pieces in their homes before ordering.
Throughout her presentation, Jamie shared examples of senior portraits, family portraits, pet photography, and large-format wall art. She stressed that photography should go beyond simply documenting appearances and instead tell the unique story of each person and family.
One of the most memorable moments of her presentation was a story about delivering a large senior portrait to a family. The image immediately stopped the student's mother in her tracks and became a centerpiece in their home—a perfect example of the emotional impact Jamie hopes to create through her work.
Jamie also discussed the rapid changes in photography technology. While she learned on film and still appreciates the traditional methods, she explained how modern digital equipment allows photographers to achieve exceptional image quality and serve clients more efficiently. She noted that artificial intelligence has become a useful editing tool but emphasized that she relies on AI only to streamline workflow rather than create photographs.
Looking ahead, Jamie is launching a new project called "Simply Seen," which will highlight personal stories that go beyond surface appearances. Working with local organizations such as the Catherine McAuley Center, she hopes to create portraits and storytelling exhibits that celebrate resilience, humanity, and community connection.
During the question-and-answer session, members asked about advances in photography technology, preserving family memories, organizing digital photo collections, favorite photos she has taken, and the areas of photography she enjoys most. Jamie shared that while she occasionally photographs weddings, her greatest passion remains capturing families and high school seniors.
Jamie closed by encouraging members to preserve their family stories through photographs and printed artwork, reminding us that there is never a wrong time to celebrate the people who matter most.
