Next week meet on Wednesday!
DO NOT FORGET to meet at SRHS's pool on Wednesday, July 25th, instead of at Jackson Cafe on Tuesday July 24...to celebrate our support for the canal kids graduating from water safety/swimming lessons offered through Make a Splash.  Join us for burritos with them for lunch!
Next read our Breakfast Assembly notes and then our Happy News for the week.  Susan Lundy, filling in for Jaime Ortiz.

Summary of Assembly Meeting breakfast July 17, 2018
Most of the meeting was spent discussing the year’s schedule; to meet weekly for breakfast, to meet semi-monthly for breakfast, or to vary.  Final decision/vote was to meet weekly for breakfast with occasional date changes for community service and/or social meetings.  First such scheduled date change remains next week, where we meet on Wednesday at SRHS pool at 11:30 am to celebrate the “Make a Splash” graduation of the pre-k youngsters from the canal who have learned water safety/basic swimming.
Second change is definitely the week of October 16 where we meet with our SHHS Interact CLUB for lunch on the 17th.   The tentative annual calendar, revised, was presented by Brigette.
The rest of this article is details of the discussion, with points made by each Club member who spoke.
John is not in favor of 2 x month meeting only.  He thinks we like to get together for breakfasts.  He feels we will lose retention.  He finds lower participation if we don’t meet here.    He prefers weekly  meetings with the President able to move it occasionally with ample advanced notice.
Jim remembers when he was President and he learned that we lose momentum if we go dark.  Also, he cannot always make community projects on mid-day.  He works.
Helen says she is also is old school…needs weekly meetings.  Helen believes we should also do community service in addition, and occasional social meetings (particularly around holidays).
Stan said he was not really aware that we have been doing community service  weekly (Interact).   Stan likes one community service project a month.
Judi likes going to meeting for breakfast!  She likes flexibility, too.   She presented the idea of the person who sets up being responsible for food as well, but the old timers all said “been there/done that/doesn’t work/don’t even think it” so…we will probably only bring our own food when we have so many folks that we need to do a continental breakfast.
John thought we went to quarterly pay because it was easier to keep accounting, but Cindy said either was fine.  Also, John worried if it affected Barbara’s income; SL explained she now works for Whistlestop and no, it doesn’t, as Barbara is a full time Whistlestop employee and on Tuesdays, she just gets off earlier thanother days.
Jim said he really wanted us all to have MAJOR attendance at Community Service projects (as we did in the Farmer’s Market project)  To do this, we should announce the project 3 or 4 months in advance, get volunteers and sign-ups, etc.etc.
Brigette suggested that we are attempting to give notice 6 months in advance, because it is her job to set up a project and if onlyy 3 people show up it wastes her time and discourages her.
Bev…some community projects are done several years in a row:   Parking for seniors in late Oct.   Canal thanksgiving food pantry; Coastal Clean-Up;  Bowl for Kids Sake, Jimbalaya, Dictionaries, Bocci Ball, Joint Interact meeting, etc.  We should continue with these signature projects and build from there.
Brigette doesn’t like coastal cleanup because she doesn’t like picking up garbage.  She would rather teach people not to litter.  (? Susan unclear but Brigette got cut off a bit).
Bev suggested Preparing meals at St Vincents …2 x year.   Stan..training for serving (? Susan unclear where..Whistlestop’s Jackson café which asked us to volunteer serve or somewhere else?)
BELL RANG …meeting adjourned.
Happy News and announcements
July 17 2018
BELL RINGERS  (A "bell ringer" means at least $100 was donated):     Jim Carriere described Rotarian Erik Elsea's Mississippi River Shelterbox Expedition (see attached story) and said he was trying to raiser $225k and change.

Other Happy News:
John Bottari was happy that spouse Theresa's youngest daughter (and final empty nester) is now engaged, having been proposed to at a beautiful river in Montana while there enjoying the new vacation home.  John also was happy that the smallest number of polio cases during the 2017-2018 Rotary Year just got reported:  eleven!   (Hugh announced one new case was found.)
Hugh announced he had a good time with his 85 yr old Dad (celebrating his Dad's birthday).
Carola's newest grandson arrived:  7 lbs, 7 oz, 21.5"  Dashiell Joseph   We all applauded the long and lanky addition!

Finallly, announcements:   Judi encouraged anyone who had not yet done so to enroll in Basic PERLS and elicited a recommendation from John Bottari (and Helen agreed, since she had been an instructor for several years).
Stan (back from cataract surgery and looking great!) described several amazing Toronto experiences.  First, 25,000 people needed 2 seatings for the opening session.   Second, at a breakout session, Stan learned the "Power of Asking" and when applied to our Harbor Foundation, suggests we can do more work for more people and have fewer breakfasts...become a SERVICE ABOVE SELF Club!   Also, in most countries, the RI dues are a substantial part of income...and as John Bottari added, we are lucky in the US that we can become Paul Harris ourselves; in most countries, a richer donor must provide Paul Harris money.
Barbara reported a break-out session called "Bridge to Health"  and also mentioned that two international projects were happening soon in case we wanted to volunteer.  H2Open Door in Puerto Rico and in Cuba.
FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT IS OUR HOLIDAY PARTY IS TUESDAY EVENING< DECEMBER 11 at SAN RAFAEL JOES.  (Thanks, Bev!)  Calendar it!
