Greetings

As the Rotary District Conference 2016 passed, hats off to District Governor Nick Frankle and the organizing committee on a job well done.  It was a great gathering of friends, coming together to inspire one anther, whether it is a new or old project, to Polio eradication, to the most important project of all World Peace.

As we join Rotary we start to realize we are stronger as a group (club) than individual, then coming to Rotary conventions and conferences that we are part of a organization that is bigger than any army, that really care about humanity and want to improve quality of life.

As a Rotarian we can change the world by bringing people together to show we are all the same, we want to live healthy and happy with no diseases or wars, building bridges of better understanding and inspire others to greatness.

"The foundation upon which Rotary is built is friendship; on no less firm foundation could it have stood"
                                                                                                                                                         -Paul P. Harris-

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much"
                                                                                      Helen Keller

Stories
Meeting October 20, 2016
Kathy McGee led us in the Flag Salute.

Our guest today was a skeleton that Kathy McGee picked up at a Halloween store in honor of our fundraiser Nightmare on the Hill. On that note, Kathy is collecting decorations for Nightmare on the Hill and asked that anybody donating decorations bring them to our meeting next week.

Midge Stork announced that our raffle prize was a $50 gift card to Lure donated by Carol Marquez-Olson.

John Borneman led us in a song.

We sang Happy Birthday to Ken Kagan.

Michelle Cekov told us about her adventures at Old 'Chella last weekend.

A reminder to board members and new members who need their Blue Badges, the next board meeting will be in 2 weeks.

Jeff Hata spoke about Nightmare on the Hill. The good news is that we are in the black before we even have the event. We need to work on ticket sales, raffle prizes and decorations from now until the event.

Alison Thompson gave our joke of the day.

Judy Hoag spoke about Poinsettia sales. We need to sell. Large orders are preferred because we can drop ship orders 10 cases or more.

Bruce McGee read off the list of members who have enough points to give a Paul Harris Fellow award. We will be having a meeting about membership the first meeting in December and P.D.G. Wade Nomura will be attending. It would be a great thing to award a few Paul Harris Fellows that day.

Joe Strohman is looking for Employee of the Quarter nominees.

Midge Stork conducted the raffle and our lucky winner was Laura Shannon!!!

Nope...it's remember the WaytoGO!

Ventura East Rotary is celebrating "Rotary in Ventura County" with a "funtastic" Star Princess 4-day cruise featuring all day visits to Catalina island's hideaway, Avalon and Mexico's charming Ensenada.  The best part is it will be with your favorite friends and Rotary Club members.

Organized by 53 year Ventura Club member, John Masterson (aka Capt'n Cruise),  this will have the fun, food and fraternization (remember the Love Boat?) of a normal Princess Cruise with the added Rotary elements such as cocktail parties, unique scavenger hunt and an uproarious joint, all club meeting, held by our 2016-2017 leader and world traveler, Husam Hismeh.  Even transportation to San Pedro is included.

While the fight to eradicate polio suffered a blow this year when the virus re-emerged in Nigeria, Rotary leaders and top health experts focused Monday on the big picture: the global presence of the paralyzing disease has never been smaller. The headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, served as the site of Rotary’s fourth annual World Polio Day event. Some of the biggest names in the polio eradication campaign were there to reflect on the year’s progress and discuss what’s needed to end the disease for good. More than 200 people...

At this year’s World Polio Day celebration in Atlanta, Rotary is harnessing the power of virtual reality technology to build empathy and inspire action in our fight to eradicate polio. Rotary, with support from the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, produced a virtual reality film that tells the story of Alokita, a young adult who suffered paralysis from polio as a child growing up in India, which has been polio-free since 2011. “When you open your eyes and see a different environment around you, you relate to the subject on a visceral, personal level,” says Vincent Vernet, direct of digital and...

From the United Nations’ earliest days in the aftermath of World War II, the organization’s humanitarian mission has always dovetailed with Rotary’s efforts to administer aid and build peace. This year’s Rotary Day at the United Nations, 12 November, will highlight the role businesses can play in that collaboration as we work toward a more just and equitable world. The theme of this year’s gathering at UN headquarters in New York City, “Responsible Business, Resilient Societies,” recognizes Rotary’s role at the intersection of commerce and cause. As leaders in their professions and...

Today marked the start of the battle to take control of Mosul back from the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. The city is the group's last major stronghold in Iraq. But humanitarian aid agencies have known about the military offensive, giving them an unusual opportunity to prepare for the crisis. "It is rare for the world to get early warning of a vast human catastrophe," says Chris Warham, chief executive of ShelterBox. "The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees issued a paper in July saying this would likely be the biggest humanitarian crisis of the year — and we better get...
