Rotary Club of Ventura-East

Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprising of local business, civic and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical, nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships and through that we are able to get things done in this community. Like:

Scholarships at 5 local high schools,
Interact Clubs at 3 local schools.
Support the YMCA, City Center, Ventura Botanical Gardens
Promote literacy and career guidance in schools

Internationally we support a huge project our club started called GoCare in Nicaragua and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East meets Thursday noon to 1:30 at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Come and learn more about Rotary's humanitarian service, high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will in this community.

Wow! We have come "almost" full circle this Rotary year. It seems hard to believe that we have only two weeks left before Jeff Burgh takes the wheel! I know they tell you at PETS to not count down the time and to keep you foot on the pedal until the last day, which is what we are doing, but...

It has been a tough year for membership this year, but we have added some really spectacular members this year with at least one more member to added before the end of this Rotary year. It's not too late to propose a new member and have them brought into the club before the end of this Rotary year, hint, hint... It was great to induct Mary Jarvis from Kaiser Permanente into the club last week. It's been quite a trek getting schedules to line up, but we finally got it done and I know that Mary will make a great addition to our club. I can't wait to induct Adonis Campillo very soon!

Despite the end of the year coming we still have a Sip & See left to do this year. We are going to end the way we started with #RotaryEastRocks Rock Painting. If you remember, we had a great time painting the rocks, but when we put the rocks out in the public we did have some hits on our #RotaryEastRocks hashtag and one of our rocks actually was taken to Buffalo, New York to be rehidden! So come out and paint a rock if you would like or what about getting to know a member of the club just a little better then you did before? The Sip & See will be June 18th at SpiceTopia 6:30 - 8:00.

We have the District Social coming up on June 20th at Dodger Stadium, Dodgers vs Giants! And on June 29th we have our District Step Down for District Governor Sandi Schwartz.

Our Step Down dinner will be on June 21st at Strey Cellars in Oxnard. For you beer drinkers, we will also have beer available from one of my favorite brewery's Poseidon Brewery! I look forward to seeing you at the Step Down and celebrating our year and our successes!

The "Not" So Silent Corner

Sip & See

Twelve months ago I collected rocks with Ashley Pope for our first Sip & See. It was the start of a new year and we were going to start the year with this crazy of idea. Our initial rocks made it across the US and social media let us keep track of them. #RotaryEastRocks you may recall was coined. Originally the idea of painting rocks was not understood but I can share that everyone who participated had a blast. So, we come full circle this month. We end our Sip & See program the way it started. Who wants to paint rocks? I do! Now that people know about the hashtag and the way the rocks got us seen, I’m hoping that the end of the program will mean lots of our friends creating their own #RotaryEastRocks masterpiece. Bring your own rock and leave with a painted masterpiece. Spread the word that #RotaryEastRocks or have a keepsake of a marvelous year of service. The choice is yours but first, you have to join in on the fun!

Inspirational Message was given by John Borneman.

Introduction of guests & visiting Rotarians by Jeff Hata.

Rich Stewart, Harriet Clune and Jim Word recounted the fantastic weekend they had at Bill and Lynn Spellman's wedding in Yosemite. It sounds like the weather gods cooperated and that the weather was beautiful for the ceremony.

Bruce McGee spoke about programs for next year. If you know of someone who has an interesting story to tell, let Kathy McGee know. Programs are all of our responsibility.
