  • Promote literacy and career guidance in schools

Internationally we support a huge project our club started called GoCare in Nicaragua and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

The Rotary year is winding down but we are in the best season of the year! It's scholarship time and our scholarship committee, led by Tim Hughes, is off and running. The committee in interviewing the applicants this week and on May 30th we will be awarding up to $60,000 in scholarships. I look forward to that meeting. Thank you to Tim and his team for getting this done.

In addition to scholarships, we will be presenting Fatima Waqar from Buena High School with the first place prize for her 4 Way Test Essay, also, District Governor Sandi Schwartz will be here to present Fatima with the first place prize for winning the District Competition! It will be a busy meeting on May 30th for sure! I hope everyone can make it to this meeting!

Our Step Down dinner will be on June 21st at Strey Cellars in Oxnard. For  you beer drinkers, we will also have beer available from one of my favorite brewery's Poseidon Brewery! I look forward to seeing you at the Step Down and celebrating our year and our successes!

Does anyone cruise?

So I am late to the game as usual. I have just discovered Cruises and the many ways to relax. I also found that even on a big boat, I find things that help me be grateful and look forward to life in Ventura County. Cruising reminds me of my days in Rotaract. Twice a year we traveled to exotic Tijuana.  When I was President of CLU Rotaract we visited three orphanages in Tijuana and it gave everyone perspective on life in Thousand Oaks as we knew it. We spent most of the time cleaning, playing with the kids and of course working on various project. Then at night, we would hit the town. It was much safer back then and it was a big selling point for the group to travel together and work together.

Wouldn’t a three-day cruise to Ensenada be fun and when we get to Ensenada, we actually hang out with Rotarians there and maybe join in on one of their projects for the day? Afterall, Ensenada has a huge Rotary wheel on the main drag that thanks the Rotarians for their community work. This was one of the projects that just didn’t get any traction this year. Sure, people loved the idea but not so much when it came time to make it a reality. This has been the struggle.

Hearing nothing new is being done or that more social activities need to be planned but no commitment or participation that would get say we are on the right track. I had the same feeling at the recent Sip and See. Painting with spices and making art is not really my thing but getting to chat with people like Roy Valdez made it worthwhile.  The Sip & See idea is basic; easy and fun with a splash of camaraderie. There is genius in the idea of just getting together for something other than a half day project. If you haven’t yet made it out to an activity, there is still time! We have two more Sip and See before the end of the year. Come and meet new people or connect with old friends. It may not be a cruise but maybe you will have fun and there is no passport required!
