Rotarians Doing Good Locally

Last week I shared information about our experience (Rich Stewart, Jeff Burgh & Harriet) helping out through the United Way Day of Caring, Surfrider Foundation Beach Clean-up.  This week I want to give a “hats off” salute to others in our club who also supported community events.
One event supported by Amber Stevens, Chair of the Community Service Committee, was working on fleece blankets to be donated to needy elders in our local communites.  The group of volunteers completed 6 blankets that will be distributed.  She says it was easy and fun!
Bruce McGee, Tobias Hildebrand and Colin Hoag, with his son, Zander Hoag, all worked at the River Haven community in Ventura down near the river and Harbor Boulevard.  River Haven is a self-governing community of formerly homeless people who now live in Geodesic Dome housing, thanks to the work of the Turning Point Foundation, who, 10 years ago, funded the start of River Haven.  Our Rotarians helped out there on the Day of Caring Event.  River Haven is in need of many things, among them personal supplies such as razors, toothpaste, tooth brushes, mouthwash, deodorant, shower gel, shampoo and such.  If you have some of these items to donate, bring them to the club.  We’ll get them there.
Last but never least, Midge Stork took time to visit the Olivas Adobe and prune the roses.  She is an avid gardener with a non-stop green thumb!
We will be doing more locally this year.  Come out and support our Community Service Committee and do some good things to help our neighbors in need.

Stories
Meeting September 21, 2017
Bill Crookston led us in the Flag Salute.

Our Inspirational Message was delivered by Greg Jones.

President Harriet thanked Sharon Daly for greeting and Amber Stevens and Tim Hughes for taking attendance.

Midge Stork announced that our raffle prize was a $50 gift card to Olive Garden donated by Tom Swan.

John Borneman led us in a song.

President Harriet recognized our members who volunteered some of their time last Saturday for United Ways Day of Caring. President Harriet shared a story about a volunteer who took a picture of President Harriet, Rich Stewart and Jeff Burgh and then realized that they were Rotarians. As it turns out the picture taker was a past Rotary Scholarship recipient and said that they could not have gone to college without the scholarship!

Announcements: President Harriet said that we could get either December 27th or December 28th for Rose Parade Float decorating times. There was a clip board going around and based on which day and time slot was most popular that would be the day we go.

The Disitrict Conference is October 6th - 8th. Members will get $50 back from the club if they register.

The reception for District Governor John Weiss will be Monday at the Ventura Yacht Club, 5:00 - 7:00 pm.

October 11th there will be a succulent party at the Pazen's to make raffle prizes for Nightmare on the Hill.

President Harriet has been meeting with the Presidents in our group and our offer for group rates on Nightmare on the Hill tickets have been well received.

Happy $'s: Rich Stewart, Sam Marsh, Jeff Hata and Bill Gray.
News from Rotary International
When we introduced Rotary Club Central in 2012, it revolutionized goal tracking and planning for clubs and districts — no more filling out paper club-planning forms or passing along boxes of historical club information every time a new leader took office. Rotary Club Central offered clubs and districts a quantifiable way to begin measuring local and global impact, specifically membership initiatives, service activities, and Rotary Foundation giving. But as with any technological advancement, in a few short years, Rotary Club Central began to show its age, and Rotarians took notice. They...

At its January 2017 meeting, the Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new zone structure for Rotary clubs. Rotary bylaws require the Board to complete a comprehensive review of the 34 Rotary zones no less often than every eight years to ensure that each zone has an approximately equal number of Rotarians. The Board’s previous review of the zones occurred in 2008. The Board earlier approved the creation of three regional workgroups to develop rezoning proposals for Asia, Europe/Africa, and the Americas. These workgroups comprised one representative (either a current director,...

Through The Rotary Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. We’ve also led the fight to eradicate polio worldwide. As part of our celebration of the Foundation’s centennial, we’re honoring 20 global grant projects with special recognition. Learn more about the projects using our interactive map.

The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends. Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...

When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia. “I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...
