I don’t Understand Halloween

 

I was the odd child that didn’t like Halloween growing up. I confess that I got nothing out of the opportunity to stay out and eat candy handed to me by strangers. Why was I begging for candy and why did I have to wear a costume? My poor parents got stuck with a stubborn kid who just would not buy into the notion of this loved day. I understand their pain and struggle now, all too well. You see, my cup fills each time I am able to make a difference in someone’s world and I don’t understand why others don’t join in on the fun. Rotarians know what I am talking about. That rush you get when a child smiles after getting a toy from Rotaract at Christmas, that tingling feeling of pride you get when you hear you have been part of eradicating Polio, not to leave out the happy warm feeling that overcomes you when you serve. How do I explain to others how great the opportunities are that Rotary offers and how do I get them to join in on the fun? How do I reach the people who say they understand what service is but don’t sign up or do anything outside of a meeting? I see Jeff reaching out and talking to his membership and I see his Board working hard to give everyone a great year. I see my parents’ struggle. Halloween has been transformed in my world as symbol of missed opportunities. I missed years of fun just because I would not participate. Don’t be the person that misses out, just because you don’t understand what is being offered. Join the fun, especially because we are almost halfway through this Rotary year.
