President's Message
Jeff Hata

This Rotary week was a little bittersweet to me. As I announced at last week's meeting Rafael "Rafa" Canton submitted his resignation from the club. When I first joined the club we had LeRoy Andrews, Pete Gallagher, Rafa, John Borneman and Andy Corliss who all sat at the same table, right in front of the lecturn. Slowly as time goes on we have lost LeRoy and Andy and now Pete and Rafa are no longer able to attend meetings and have resigned from the club. I am happy that our club recognizes the contributions that Pete and Rafa have made to the club and have given them Honorary Member Status, but yet, time marches on and we need to recognize those who have given so much to our club and appreciate them while we can. Pete and Rafa, we thank you for everything you have given to the club over all these years and know that we do recognize the work you put into making the Rotary Club of Ventura-East what we are today.

On another note, Jessica Castaneda, Interact Faculty Advisor, and Carly Hansen, Interact President, have set the date for the first Interact meeting for this school year. That meeting will be on September 24th at 12:36 pm in Room 31 at Buena High School. We are looking for at least 2 club members to be on the Interact Committee with Kris Hansen so that we can make sure we have a club member at every meeting. The students are eager to get started and I would like to make sure we give them the best start we can. If you are interested, please contact Kris Hansen.

We did our third Sip & See last night at the Ventura Family YMCA and what a great project it was! Thank you to Roy & Jess Valdez, Bruce & Kathy McGee, Margarida Eidson, Rosandra, Carmen & Oscar Esquivel and of course Amber Stevens for making the evening such a great success. We assembled 11 blankets to donate to City Center, Tender Life and any other non-profit who works with homeless or financially disadvantaged parents with infants or young children! Again thank you to everyone who came out and made the evening such a huge success! Fact is, we could have probably put together a few more blankets, but we ran out of fabric!

Our next Sip & See is being moved up a few weeks because we will be making succulent wreaths and planters for raffle prizes for Nightmare on the Hill. Mark your calendars for Wednesday October 3rd from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. We will be meeting at the Poinsettia Pavilion for this Sip & See.

Our speaker this week will be David Deutsch from NAMI. Our club has put together a team to participate in the NAMI Walks event on October 13th. I would like to see a few of us out on that day supporting our President Elect, Jeff Burgh, and NAMI. Next week, September 27th, we will hear from Dave Creswell, Ventura Unified School District Superintendent.

NOT SO SILENT CORNER

Join the fun and Volunteer with us!

Do the little things we do really make a difference? My grandpa used to say to me, “It’s the little things we do and say, that mean so much as we go our way. A friendly deed can lift the load of weary shoulders on the road.” I had no clue what he was saying but he said it each time we were volunteering for something together. You see, I’ve come to understand that it isn’t the act but who it affects, that matters. I’ve been to several of your meetings and each time there is a volunteer roster going around. Opportunities are plenty! Who wants to help set up chairs or break them down? Who wants to blend tea? Who likes to make blankets? Who wants to walk in circles for the backpack project? We do! As a service group, we just get together we have loads of fun.  Jeff and I do as much as we can although we invite friends and family to join us, we’d love to do these things with you! Don’t let the chance pass you by to have fun with us!

RCVE NAMI Walks

We are putting together a NAMI Walks team this year to support our President Elect Jeff Burgh. Please take the time to click on the link and register as a walker. You don't have to do the walk, you can come that morning and just be there for support, but please do take the time to register and ask your friends and family to please donate to NAMI.
