Rotary Club of Ventura-East

Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprising of local business, civic and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical, nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships and through that we are able to get things done in this community. Like:

Scholarships at 5 local high schools,
Interact Clubs at 3 local schools.
Support the YMCA, City Center, Ventura Botanical Gardens
Promote literacy and career guidance in schools

Internationally we support a huge project our club started called GoCare in Nicaragua and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East meets Thursday noon to 1:30 at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Come and learn more about Rotary's humanitarian service, high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will in this community.

Thank you to everyone who came out for the social at the Ultimate Escape Rooms! We had one group manage to escape with 8 minutes to spare, but unfortunately we lost our other group. Fortunately we found them and had a great time hanging out at Margarita Villa after. It was the first time I've experienced the escape room and I found it to be pretty fun. One things for sure, I was using parts of my brain that I haven't used in a while so, I'm not sure how much of a help or hindrance I was to my team, but it was a lot of fun!

We have the District Social coming up on June 20th at Dodger Stadium, Dodgers vs Giants! And on June 29th we have our District Step Down for District Governor Sandi Schwartz.

Our Step Down dinner will be on June 21st at Strey Cellars in Oxnard. For you beer drinkers, we will also have beer available from one of my favorite brewery's Poseidon Brewery! I look forward to seeing you at the Step Down and celebrating our year and our successes!

If you want something you've never had, you'll have to do something you've never done.

The "Not" So Silent Corner

A new start is fast approaching

Two. Two weeks until Jeff’s step down. Two weeks before the last Sip & See. Two weeks before a new start for Ventura Rotary East. My favorite teacher when I attended Bell High school was my AP Physics teacher, Mr. Niebuhr. He was a disciplined black belt and his enthusiasm for physics made us all want to be physicists, long before Sheldon Cooper and the Bing Bang Theory made it popular. Mr. Niebuhr changed the way I saw the world. He reminded me of a contemporary Edgar Allan Poe and some of the things he said were just as creepy. Every Friday Mr. Niebuhr would stand at the front of the room and taunt us as we took our exams, “Time will pass. Will you?” Time. Time will pass. What was he talking about? There was time to do everything and time to say all I had to say. I was not a slave to time. Not until I realized that I could not control time did I truly appreciate Mr. Niebuhr and his sense of humor.

You see, time marches on, even if we are not ready for it to do so. Like sands through the hourglass, minute by minute, time slips by. No one can stop time, and no one can barter for more time. Our choice is to either act or not. Remember this. Remember this two weeks from now when this crazy article no longer is part of the newsletter. Remember this each time a new activity is proposed. Remember that inaction is still action and as such, the time to make a difference is now. If you have not been to a Sip & See or you haven’t invited a friend to a meeting, there is no time like today. 25 years later and Mr. Niebuhr is still teaching me about time, and he is still changing how I view the world. So, we know time will pass. I guess the question is, will it pass you by?

Joe Strohman and Kathy McGee introduced our club's High School 4 Way Test Essay contest winner Fatima Waqar. Kathy presented Fatima with the First Place trophy and a check for $250.00. District Governor Sandi Schwartz then presented Fatima with the First Place Award from the District and a check for $300.00! Congratulations Fatima.

Tim Hughes and the scholarship committee (Ken Kagan, Kathy McGee, Bruce McGee & Amber Stevens) presented scholarships totaling $60,000 to our very deserving scholarship recipients.

Margarida Eidson conducted the raffle and our lucky winner was Daniel Perez, one of our scholarship recipients!
