Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprising of local business, civic and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical, nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships and through that we are able to get things done in this community. Like:

Scholarships at 5 local high schools,
Interact Clubs at 3 local schools.
Support the YMCA, City Center, Ventura Botanical Gardens
Promote literacy and career guidance in schools

Internationally we support a huge project our club started called GoCare in Nicaragua and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East meets Thursday noon to 1:30 at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Come and learn more about Rotary's humanitarian service, high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will in this community.

Opening Our Hearts

Much has been written about the Thomas Fire. Much has been given to aid those in need, by many organizations including Rotary, neighbors helping neighbors and an outpouring of love and support by all the members of our Ventura Community and beyond. Nothing can replace all that was lost.

There was an event this past week, held at the Mission who donated the space. Involved were Totally Local VC, the Ventura Modern Quilt Guild, the Jewish Federation and Food Share.

Quilters from seven countries and 50 states donated beautiful and colorful, hand-made quilts to any families who were victims of the Thomas Fire. Stacks and stacks of quilts. New blankets, sheets and pillows. Kitchen items. Baskets of goodies. All given with love and caring from neighbors to neighbors.

The quilts were amazing. Georganna Hawley, quilter extraordinaire, wife of Tom Swan who is a past president of Rotary Club Ventura East, and all the volunteers did an amazing job distributing the quilts. Each quilt took about 100 hours of labor to complete. And there were more than 400 quilts. Every Saturday in March there is a “Thomas Fire Relief Quilt Sew In.” They still are working on several hundred more quilts for the project! What a wonderful way to give. What a wonderful gift to receive.

Kris Hansen led us in the Flag Salute and also delivered our Inspirational Message.

Tom Hashbarger introduced guests and visiting Rotarians.

Guests of Sharon Daly were Kevin Daly and Lee Merritt and guest of the club was Adrienne Stephens from the Ventura Land Trust.

President Harriet thanked Michelle Cekov for greeting and Tim Hughes for taking attendance.

Steve Harbison presented our joke of the day followed by our song of the day and John Borneman.

Avenue of Service Announcements:

Community Service - Amber Stevens thanked everyone who came out for our tree planting day. It was wet, but it was a lot of fun. April 5th after our club meeting will be our next Community Service meeting and April 21st there will be a blanket making project at the YMCA.

May 17-18 we will be helping with "A Night to Remember." This is a prom for kids with special needs. More information to follow.

Vocational Service - Joe Strohman thanked Sharon Daly and John Borneman for doing Mock Interviews today at Buena High School. The essays have been turned in for the 4 Way Test Essay contest. Over 580 pages of essays to be read and evaluated this year! Sharon Daly has joined our group of judges to evaluate the essays this year.

President Harriet presented Sharon Daly and Lee Merritt with a check for $2,296.00 to further support the ongoing projects of Mossy Foot.

Rotarian at Work t-shirts are in and available for purchase. $10 per shirt.

The Ojai Wine Festival is coming June 10th. Discount tickets are available, please sign the sign up sheet how many tickets you want.

Tom Swan announced a document shredding fundraiser on April 20th. The event will be at Tom's office and each box will be a $5 donation to the club!
