President's Message

I do not really have a topic for this week’s article. To be quite honest, my mind has been elsewhere lately. Oscar, Rosandra’s Father, went to see his doctor last week and it was determined that he needed to have a stress test. Oscar went in to do his stress test the end of last week and it was determined he needed to get an angiogram immediately. So, on Tuesday, he went in for the angiogram and it was determined he needed a double bypass and he had to stay in the hospital until he had the surgery. It was determined that it was too risky to send him home at that point. Lucky for Oscar, there was an open window on Wednesday, and he has had his operation. The doctors are happy and now the rehabilitation starts. So, my take on this is that we need to make sure we get our regular checkups and question our doctors if something doesn’t seem right to us. AND DON’T miss your checkups!

At my last visit with my oncologist my tests were again negative, and my oncologist was very happy with the results. He said to be quite honest, I was a very sick man when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was not experiencing the symptoms that you typically experience and was feeling very healthy. If I did not get diagnosed when I did and received the treatment I did it was the opinion of my oncologist that I would not be here today. So, I am grateful for our medical system and the treatments that are available. And yes, I did skip my regular physical for a couple of years. DON’T miss your checkups!

I want to say if you have time or the opportunity to reach out and give Midge Stork a hand, it would be greatly appreciated. Dave is back in the hospital and Midge and her son Todd are under a lot of stress. Anything we can do to help Midge would be a big help. Midge has meant a lot to our club with everything she has done and now it is our time to help Midge and her family out.

This week’s speaker is Megan Hahn. Megan is due to be inducted into the club and we are taking the opportunity to do her member interview this week. We have three new members in the process of becoming members, beside Megan we have Cal Magro and Mary Jarvis. I’m really looking forward to the new energy these three will bring to us.

Don’t forget we are moving our March 7th meeting to March 6th in the evening. Our speaker will be Sylvia Whitlock, the first woman in Rotary, and this will also be a joint meeting with Rotaract. Please make sure you RSVP for this meeting because seating will be limited.

NOT SO SILENT CORNER

Let me count the ways…

Jeff is an understated romantic. He surprised me on how in tune he is with what I need and how easy it truly is to show Jeff how much he means to me. So, let me count the ways for you…

First, I love the way Jeff coyly asks for help. Nothing more endearing than being asked to participate in a project. “Wouldn’t it be fun to….” are words I have become very keen to listening for because they usually follow with a project he had in mind.  This is the only way I can explain why I bought black trash bags in bulk this month. Don’t tell Jeff but I look forward to these projects. I love Operation Gratitude and walking for 4 hours making care packages for troops. I begrudgingly agreed to clearing my closet for the 40-day challenge too. I simply adore that each time a project comes up, we help together and touch the lives of people that we will never meet.

Second, Jeff shares his friends with me. “ Amber is having a swimming class that I think you will enjoy. It will be fun girl-time for you!” Yes, I get to make friends with some of the most awesome people in Ventura because Jeff suggests I do things with them, but I find also that I have lots in common with them too. I look forward to all the mixers because I get to share recipes with Kathy McGee and hearing about how yummy it all turned out. I love hearing about Harriet Clune’s grandkids and buying Girl Scout cookies form Ashley Pope’s nieces each year.

Third, Jeff helps me see the bigger picture. We are all busy and we all have full plates, but I am always reminded of how we can do a little bit more. You see, if good was good enough, Polio would not be on the brink of eradication. If we have done all we can, then human trafficking would not be an area of focus. The bigger picture is a bit like a Monet for us: stand back and see chaos come into focus and make sense. So, each time Jeff says he enjoyed his Rotary meeting, I know it means I have projects and people to look forward to. Which is exactly the love language we both speak.
