The Not So Silent Corner

Hello friends! A new Rotary year has begun, and I am very excited to be Jeff’s not so-silent partner on his journey. I must share that when Jeff was asked to be President, I was terrified. After attending PETS and the International Conference in Toronto, I am fully on board to act as host and help in any way I can. This includes, giving you the behind the scene look at what it takes to be the support for the President and hopefully inspire each of you to come join us for some fun activities.

Little known fact about me, I was CLU’s Rotoract President 95-96. It was rewarding and I loved serving but all these years I have been silently helping Jeff with his project. Well, this year, I want to have a few fun projects that I will need your help to launch! Come to the Sip & See and we will chat about them!

  • Promote literacy and career guidance in schools

Internationally we support a huge project our club started called GoCare in Nicaragua and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

President's Message

The year has definitely started off with a bang or should I say we are off and running? The Push-em Pull-em parade, one social down - #RotaryEastRocks, our District Governor Sandi Schwartz has already made her official visit to the club, our club assembly this Thursday, our first community service project this weekend - Make Someone Smile and another social at Wendy Pazen's home this Saturday! I love it!

One of my goals was to keep our club busy this year and we have managed to do that, so far. I can say that the people I have spoken to have had a good time, so let's keep it up.

On the topic of #RotaryEastRocks...If you look on our club FaceBook page, a random person visiting Ventura found one of the #RotaryEastRocks hidden by Ashley Pope and is taking the rock home with them to Buffalo, New York and will be hiding the rock in Buffalo when they get home. Mission accomplished! The goal of #RotaryEastRocks was to get people to find the rocks, look at them, find the hashtag and then search it on FaceBook or Instagram. The fact that this person is now taking the rock and hiding it all the way across the country takes this project to the next level. It's all about getting people to see our page and see what we do and then if all goes well get interested and get involved with us.

We have our club assembly this week which is typically not a highly attended meeting, but I encourage you to come to the meeting and help us plan events for the year ahead. August 2nd we will be interviewing one of our new members, Roy Valdez. I've had a "little" time to talk with Roy and his wife Jess and have found them to be very motivated to be active in our community and give back and then on August 9th we will have our new Sheriff Elect Bill Ayub speaking. Make sure to spread the word and invite people you think would make good Rotarians. If you do plan on having a guest, please send Jeff Burgh an email so we can be sure to notify our caterer.

I love the energy and I love the ideas that are being presented. Let's keep it up and have fun too!

  • Social with all 3 Ventura Clubs next Thursday at the Ventura Yacht Club. 5:30 - ??? This will be a pot luck so bring a side dish, salad or desert.
  • The Ventura Chamber has offered us a "Gold" level sponsorship if we can sell at least 40 tickets to their Taste Event on August 30th. The tickets will be $25/ticket. That’s $15 off the member price.
Ashley spoke about Sip & See next Tuesday at SpiceTopia.

Michelle Cekov & Jeanette, GoCare spoke about our projects in Nicaragua. Jeanette reported that the projects are doing well despite the unrest in the country. They are under a dusk - dawn curfew and it's pretty unnerving to hear the random gunfire throughout the city. The number of youth utilizing our projects is up and it's been determined the reason is our facilities are a safe place to go to get away from the violence that's occurring in the country. That was definitely some good news to hear!
