We are a leadership organization comprising of local business, civic and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical, nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships and through that we are able to get things done in this community. Like:

Scholarships at 5 local high schools,
Interact Clubs at 3 local schools.
Support the YMCA, City Center, Ventura Botanical Gardens
Promote literacy and career guidance in schools

Internationally we support a huge project our club started called GoCare in Nicaragua and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East meets Thursday noon to 1:30 at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Come and learn more about Rotary's humanitarian service, high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will in this community.

People Who Care

Rotarians are people who care! I can tell you this because you are one! Rotary and all its members have good hearts, good intentions and are willing to put their efforts and money behind their beliefs.

This weekend was a “Day of Caring,” an event from United Way. Our club participated in cleanups and other assorted activities on Saturday. Thanks go to Amber Stevens, chair of the Community Service Committee, for getting us all motivated!

One of the best happenings from this experience, at least for me, was the huge number (hundreds) of people from all walks of life, young & old, who volunteered for the Surfrider Foundation Beach Cleanup! We were given buckets or bags for trash, a small bucket for cigarette butts (we found 3), a bright Surfrider vest to wear (we wore “Rotarian at Work” vests) and, best of all, a pick-up stick so we didn’t have to bend over too far! Mother Nature gave us a beautiful warm sunny day. The beach was covered with picker-uppers from Surfer’s Point to as far as you could see in the opposite direction. Hundreds of people, all volunteering for a very good cause and really enjoying themselves.

We (Jeff Burgh, Rich Stewart and I) wanted a photo, so we asked a couple who were busy picking up, if they would take a photo. They saw our Rotary Vests and shared that she had received a Rotary Scholarship for $3000 from the Rotary Club of Port Hueneme! Her take on it was, “Rotary is great!” We agreed and returned the favor and took a photo of them.

Results: A great time in the beautiful ocean air, good exercise walking in the sand, finding all different colors & types of seaweed, meeting fellow volunteers who care about our beaches, and, oh yes, plastic bottles, cups, butts, Styrofoam, miscellaneous plastic bags, one pair of panties, a T shirt and other trash. Best results? Jeff found a baseball!

But the two things, best of all: there was nowhere near the amount of trash on the beach as I had imagined and there were more volunteers giving of themselves that I had expected. MORE PEOPLE WHO CARE! YES!!

Rich Stewart led us in the Flag Salute.

Our Inspirational Message was delivered by Tim Blackwell.

Alison Thompson introduced guests and visiting Rotarians.

Guest of Bill Spellman was Lynn Van Emmerick and guest of Sharon Daly was Kevin Daly.

President Harriet thanked Carolyn Diacos and Amber Landis-Stover for greeting and Margarida Eidson for taking attendance today.

Midge Stork announced that the raffle prize was a gift card to Casa Bella from Kathy McGee.

Bruce McGee gave our joke of the day.

President Harriet thanked Carolyn Diacos, Juan Mendoza, John Masterson, Tom Hashbarger, Margarida Eidson & Bob Noville for volunteering to help review our menu selections and caterers.

Kathy McGee passed around the duty roster sign up sheet.

Bill Spellman asked for the names of potential RYLA students.

Amber Stevens reviewed the United Way's Day of Caring on September 16th.

Judy Hoag spoke about Poinsettia sales and reviewed our upcoming Nicaragua trip.

Jeff Hata let us know that Nightmare on the Hill tickets are available and that we would like for each club member to sell 4 tickets. Jeff also went over what PRLS is and said he would like to see 3 - 4 people taking PRLS this year.

Husam Hishmeh also spoke about Nightmare on the Hill and also said he would match the first $500 in club donations for hurricane relief.

Joe Strohman thanked the club for our donation to Rotaract's upcoming Mexico build and spoke about the Rotaract Fundraiser at Leashless Brewing on October 13th from 6 to close.

Bruce McGee spoke about the fundraiser for the Botanical Gardens on Friday.

Kris Hansen spoke about membership. We have had many quality members come into the club lately and we need to keep inviting potential members.

President Harriet reminded everyone about Trivia Night at Garman's Pub and also D.G. John Weiss's visit on September 28th. If you are on the Board of Directors we will have a meeting with D.G. John Weiss at 11:00 on September 28th.

President Harriet also let us know about a 3 Club Social at the Ventura Yacht Club on September 25 at 5:00.

We are trying to get a slot on September 30th from 8 - 4 to decorate the Rotary Rose Parade Float.

Rotary International Board adopts new zone structure
At its January 2017 meeting, the Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new zone structure for Rotary clubs. Rotary bylaws require the Board to complete a comprehensive review of the 34 Rotary zones no less often than every eight years to ensure that each zone has an approximately equal number of Rotarians.
