Rotary Club of Ventura-East

Elevator Speech

We are a nonpolitical, nonsectarian social organization comprising local business, civic and professional leaders. We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships and through that we are able to solve community and global problems with service projects. Like:

Scholarships at 5 local high schools,
Interact Clubs at 3 local schools.
Support the YMCA, City Center, Ventura Botanical Gardens
Promote literacy and career guidance in schools
Internationally we support a medical project in Ethiopia and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East meets Thursday noon to 1:30 at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Come and learn more about Rotary's humanitarian service, high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will in this community. Use your professional skills and talents to make a difference.

Greetings fellow Rotarians and friends of The Rotary Club of Ventura East.

My Vacation is over, and my wife is getting tired of my hanging around. As most of you know, I tested positive the morning after returning home, and had some side effects. Fortunately, my doctor put me on Paxlovid right away, and am doing much better now. Frankly, I am glad to be home. Dorothy said it best. “There’s No Place Like Home”. I can’t imagine quarantining in a hotel room. A big THANK YOU to those that covered for me in my absence. All that being said, The Step-Down is still on.

Our “Step-Down” Thursday evening June 23^rd, will be held at The Four Brix Winery, located at 2290 Eastman Ave. Social hour begins at 5:30. Plans are being made for an unforgettable evening.

Our plans for working at Pacific High School this weekend have been delayed. A sprinkler system must be installed before we can proceed. Tim Hughes and Joe Bova are working on that part of the plans.

Ronald L. Hertel 4 Way Test Essay Competition

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East recognized four students from Balboa Middle School for their submissions to the 2022 Ronald L. Hertel 4 Way Test Essay competition.

Ronald L. Hertel (1933-2014) was a Charter Member of The Rotary Club of Ventura-East. Ron also served as President of The Rotary Club of Ventura East in 1967- 68. A long time businessman and developer, Ron always championed the Rotary Four Way Test as his standard for doing business and conducting your life.

His commitment to his community was apparent in his service as Vice President of the Board of Trustees for Ventura Community Memorial Hospital. Later he was a Founder and the first Chairman of the Benefactors of Community Memorial Hospital. He was also President of the Ventura Port District Board, and was on the boards of the United Way and Ventura County Community Foundation and a member of the Stanford Major Gifts Committee. He was also a leader in the Ventura County Chamber of Commerce, Ventura County Economic Development Association, and Ventura Building Industry Association, as well as a member of the Board of Directors at Bank of A. Levy.

Ron was the Canoe/Kayak Sports Commissioner for the 1984 Olympics and was responsible for site planning, construction, personnel, and international coordination and competition at Lake Casitas.

Ron's wife Carolyn Hertel and his children and family have continued to support The Rotary Club of Ventura-East and this award.

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East is proud to continue to recognize Ron and his commitment to Rotary and the community through the Ronald L. Hertel Four Way Test Essay competition and awards each year.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
