What a GREAT Saturday it was to be a Rotarian in Ventura! The dedication of Rotary Plaza at the Ventura Botanical Gardens was FANTASTIC! There were many Rotarians present for the dedication as well as friends from the Ventura Chamber of Commerce who helped us celebrate by doing a ribbon cutting to memorialize the dedication. Then it was off to help the Rotary Club of Ventura (Downtown) celebrate their 100th Anniversary! It was fun being there with them and enjoying their celebration! Only 44 more years until our 100th, who will be there for the celebration???

One of the things I thought about at Downtown's celebration was all the things Rotary does in our community and all the people we affect with our projects, collaborations with other service clubs and organizations. I know that's what makes me proud and feel good about being a Rotarian. At the end of the day, we make a difference and that's what's important. That not only goes for Rotary, but any service club. All service clubs have their area of focus and without all of us out doing what we do, I feel, our world would be in a much different place and not for the better. So thank you to all the Rotarians, Lions, Kiwanis, Optomists, Soroptomists and all the other service club members out there. We are all a force to be reckoned with and we do make a difference!

Our scholarship committee is off and running and will be conducting interviews with potential scholarship recipients. We have $60,000 available to give this year and I look forward to awarding these gifts to some very deserving students. I know in the years that I participated on the scholarship committee that the decision on who would receive a scholarship and how much they should receive was heart wrenching at times. All the applicants were deserving and had a need, it was up to us who had the greatest need and that wasn't an easy decision. I know our committee will do the best job possible and will award the scholarships based on merit and need. Thank you in advance for all the hard work.

This week our meeting will be about the 1928 St Francis Dam disaster presented by John Nichols, Santa Paula Rotarian. I know this will be a very interesting program and I look forward to this presentation. Next week our program will be Joe Strohman interviewing our new member Cal Magro. I know Cal has an interesting story to tell!

The "Not" So Silent Corner

100 years of Service

When I lived in Rome, I learned to appreciate time and space. There I was walking the same roads that Julius Caesar had and drinking from Grottos that quenched the thirst of so many in between him and me. I was transported to a time and place that I would never live and yet, I felt very connected to. Then I was in awe of everything that had been accomplished since that time and wondered what was yet to come.  The Rotary Club of Ventura celebrates 100 years of Service this month and the same feeling I had in Rome, I have in Ventura. The streets we walk and the places we live in have seen many things but just think, 100 years of Service from a club in our own very backyard!

100 years from now, the things and people I hold the dearest will be gone. I hope that our family will still be a part of Ventura and that our names evoke smiles. Who was that outspoken lady who had an article in the newsletter? Why was important to write about Rotary and encourage people to participate in programs and events? What difference will it make and who’s lives have we touched? Jeff and I always remind each other that the community service we do will often help many we will never meet. The Rotary Club of Ventura though has served in our community and they have made a difference in all our lives even if we don’t know it.  I didn’t know for many years that Ventura has three Rotary Clubs. In fact, many of the important services providers in my life, such as my optometrist and jeweler, belonged to the same Rotary club. When Jeff wanted me to meet his Rotary family, I was so happy to see so many familiar faces.

Silent ambassadors of good will are being celebrated this year, for 100 years of services.  I can only feel humbled to be present as they mark this milestone. I keep wondering though, how much more will be accomplished and by how many in the next 100 years of service.
