Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprising of local business, civic and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical, nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships and through that we are able to get things done in this community. Like:

Scholarships at 5 local high schools,
Interact Clubs at 3 local schools.
Support the YMCA, City Center, Ventura Botanical Gardens
Promote literacy and career guidance in schools

Internationally we support a huge project our club started called GoCare in Nicaragua and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East meets Thursday noon to 1:30 at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Come and learn more about Rotary's humanitarian service, high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will in this community.

The Holidays are in full swing now. We had our club Christmas Party last weekend and I want to thank Wendy Pazen for hosting this year and Vance Thompson for organizing the whole affair! I would also like to thank Bruce McGee for setting up the bar and playing the role of "Bar Tender" for most of the event. It was a very pleasant night and it was nice to see so many of our members and their families getting together and getting to know each other just a little bit better!

One of the goals I had for this year was to have more socials and opportunities for members and their families to get to know each other. It's very important that our families know what we are doing in Rotary so that they understand when we have a project that it's to make our community just a little bit better. Sip & Sees are intended to be such an event and it's good to see a few more members and their families at the Sip & Sees as time goes on.

Tonight is another Sip & See which we will be having at Labyrinth Winery in Downtown Ventura. I hope to see many of you attending tonight. Besides delicious wine we will be doing a cookie exchange. If you don't have any cookies, don't worry, please come out anyway. Remember, this is a social and we want our members to come out and socialize and get to know each other just that much better.

Our program this week will be a club assembly directed at membership. I hope that you will come this Thursday and let us know your ideas on membership and help us grow our club. We have a lot to offer our community, we need your ideas on how to spread the message and bring in new members. On January 10th, past member Tim Blackwell, will be speaking about his experiences with the Suicide Prevention Hotline. I think this will be a very interesting program and that Tim has an interesting story to tell us. This could be a program that you would consider inviting a potential member too.

If you have any suggestions on programs you would like to hear and have a speaker idea, please let me know and we will try and get them booked.

NOT SO SILENT CORNER

Growing up I had a favorite aunt, we all do, I think. Aunt Elba was glamorous, educated and she baked all my favorite treats! Pinwheel cookies, almond thumb prints, sugar cookie with icing were staples. Elba even made me a Ginger bread house from scratch! The smell of warm cookies is often found in my house during the holiday and it is a tradition that even today, all gown up, I look forward to the most.

It isn’t December in my opinion unless we bake and share with friends and family. In this tradition, when Jeff said he would be President I thought it would be a great way for us all to share a little of what we love and get to know each other. You don’t have to be a professional baker to bring a treat, just come and join us at Labyrinth Winery on December 12th. Bring two dozen cookies so we can all eat and enjoy some wine as we celebrate the holiday season and newfound friends. I can’t wait to see you all there!

Rich Stewart said that we needed the 4-6 slot filled for Salvation Army Bell Ringing. Kris Hansen will take that slot.

Margarida Eidson showed the wrapped presents that we will be donating to the military families we will be sponsoring this holiday season.

Judy Hoag announced that we will net over $9,000 from Poinsettia sales this year.

Harriet Clune thanked Vance Thompson, Tim Hughes and Rich Stewart for calling past poinsettia buyers and getting more orders at the deadline.

Midge Stork conducted the raffle and the lucky winner was Tim Hughes who promptly donated the $50 back to our club Foundation!
