Rotary Club of Ventura-East

Elevator Speech

We are a nonpolitical, nonsectarian social organization comprising local business, civic and professional leaders. We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships and through that we are able to solve community and global problems with service projects. Like:

Scholarships at 5 local high schools,
Interact Clubs at 3 local schools.
Support the YMCA, City Center, Ventura Botanical Gardens
Promote literacy and career guidance in schools
Internationally we support a medical project in Ethiopia and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East meets Thursday noon to 1:30 at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Come and learn more about Rotary's humanitarian service, high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will in this community. Use your professional skills and talents to make a difference.

Thank you, Tim Hughes and Joe Strohman for holding the meeting on June 1^st. So glad we had a full house for the Four Way Essay presentations and the last Nurse Scholarship. Thank you to our club for allowing Carin and I to participate in the 2023 Rotary International Convention in Melbourne, Australia. The Convention was very impressive. We both made many new Rotarian friends and enjoyed all the sessions and breakout presentations. Carin and I came away with many new ideas.

Last week we saw a presentation from Manci Rasmussen from the Turtle Conservancy, quite an interesting program.

Thank you to all Rotarians and family members that volunteered at the Girl Scouts Fundraising event. It was an easy and fun volunteer day.

This week we will have a presentation from the Moorpark Teaching Zoo, bring your cameras (phones) for some great picture time.

Meeting June 8, 2023

Cal Magro led us in the Flag Salute.

Steve Harbison introduced guests and visiting Rotarians.

Nick Unger was a guest of Nancy D’Atillio. Guest of Sharon Daly was Kevin Daly. Guest of the club was Renee Burke and Michelle Zdybowicz.

Thank you Dawn for taking attendance and greeting.

Our opportunity drawing today was a $40 gift card to Target generously donated by President Margarida.

The Step Down sign in sheet was being passed around.

The Downtown club is looking for some help with the Fireworks show on the 4^th of July.

Ashley Pope spoke about the Girl Scout fundraiser that is coming up this Saturday from 4:00 – 7:00 at Camp Arnaz.

President Margarida spoke about the RI Convention. It was a great time and very inspirational. Over 14,000 Rotarians from around the world attended.

President Elect Carin also spoke about the Convention. The friendliness and helpfulness of the people of Melbourne was truly extraordinary. PE Carin was inspired by the quality of the general sessions. PE Carin would highly recommend members try to attend an International Convention if you have the opportunity.

PE Carin spoke about Polio+ and that this would be Rotary’s legacy for eliminating Polio worldwide. In Pakistan there have only been 2 cases in the last year.

Bruce McGee inducted Renee Burke into the club.

The Ronald L. Hertel "4-Way Test and Me" Essay Contest

Today the following students were recognized for their essay submissions to the annual Ronald L. Hertel "4-Way Test and Me Essay Contest.

4th Place - Matthew Zermeno ( 6th Grade, Mrs. Zgliniec )

3rd Place - Michael Melendez ( 6th Grade, Mrs Brady )

2nd Place - Raylan Ortiz ( 6th Grade, Mrs Zgliniec )

1st Place - Nolan Walton ( 8th Grade, Mrs Chiriboga )

2023 Bob Pazen Nursing Scholarship Recipients

On May 11th, Joe Strohman and Derek Eidson presented 9 scholarships to nursing students currently enrolled at Ventura College.

These scholarships are presented in memory of Dr Bob Pazen, President 2006-07.

Student of the Quarter

Ashley Pope presented Melia Brown with a Student of the Quarter Award. Melia is very active in the Buena Interact Club, serving as the Club's President and has been very instrumental in establishing the "Closet" on campus at Buena High School.

District 5240 Getting Energized!

Here's a group shot of our District 5240 delegation that attended the 2023 RI Convention in Melbourne! Somewhere in this picture is President Margarida Eidson and President Elect Carin Kally! We know they will come back from the convention energized and ready to take the club to new heights!

In case you are curious and want to start planning for next year, the convention will be in Singapore! Early bird registration is open now so it's not too early to sign up!
