Hello Rotary Club of Ventura East. Although we were dark last Thursday, we had a very nice Celebration of Life at the Poinsettia Pavilion on Thursday evening for members and past members that had passed during Covid. While kitchen workers Rich and Harriet helped Master Chief Bruce prepare the food for the evening, Margarida set up a beautiful venue. Not to be outdone, our Bartender Extraordinaire Vance, made sure that everyone had the beverage of their choice. The table was set with a variety of cold cuts, cheeses, crackers, fruits, meatballs, and pasta.
At approximately 6:20, Bruce welcomed all members and guests for a very insightful evening.
First Laura spoke about Bill Crookston, and his influence and hard work in the club. On a personal note, when she met him at his first meeting, she found out that he only lived 3 doors away and became good friends with him and the family. Next, Rich gave us some insight to Bill Klope, and his service to the club and community. Following Rich was Bruce giving an outline on Ron Polito and his service to the club, including his strong influence on the club’s scholarship foundation. We all took a short break and enjoyed some special deserts made by Cynthia Hashbarger.
After the break, Bennet Collins, local Rotaract President, gave a heartfelt report on John Borneman and his personal relationship to this remarkable man. He told a story of when John caught the last known remaining male Condor to save it from extinction, and that every Condor that you now see is likely a descendant of that bird. Next John’s son Robert gave us a heartfelt story of John’s life. Following John, Jeff Burgh told of his connection to the Hashbarger family and Tom’s commitment to the club. Cynthia reminded the club of when Tom and a couple of other Rotarians donated a firetruck to Mexico, stopping by several Rotary clubs along the way. Next, Jeff Hata spoke of his relationship with Bob Lynn. Not only was Bob a great member and Jeweler, but was also an inventor, magician, and entertainer. All in all, it was a very delightful and informative evening.
