Elevator Speech

We are a leadership organization comprising of local business, civic and professional leaders.

We are a nonpolitical, nonsectarian service club.

We meet regularly to get to know each other, form friendships and through that we are able to get things done in this community. Like:

Scholarships at 5 local high schools,
Interact Clubs at 3 local schools.
Support the YMCA, City Center, Ventura Botanical Gardens
Promote literacy and career guidance in schools

Internationally we support a huge project our club started called GoCare in Nicaragua and contribute to eliminating Polio worldwide.

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East meets Thursday noon to 1:30 at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Come and learn more about Rotary's humanitarian service, high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will in this community.

So, it is a new year. A fresh start…maybe. Do we make resolutions that we suspect we will never be able to keep? Do we look back on the old year and decide to make this a better one? And how will we do that?

I wish I had the answer… but I do have a few ideas that I will try to apply to my actions this year.

1. Stick to the 4-Way Test. Think about it often, not just in passing.

Go for the truth.
Go for closer and more caring friendships; reach out to those in need of a hug or encouragement or just a willing and attentive listener.
Be a friend. What is the old saying? To have a friend requires you to step forward and BE a friend.
Go for words, actions, thoughts and behaviors that will benefit everyone with whom you come into contact in your daily life. Do a random act of kindness every day. Pay a compliment to someone. Say something nice. Say something hopeful and positive.

2. Abraham Lincoln once said something to the effect of, “Those who look for the bad in people will surely find it.” So, let’s look for and encourage the good we find.

3. Pollyanna is a character in a children’s book published in 1913 by Eleanor H. Porter. She was an optimist to the ultimate level. A quote:

“…the game was to find out something about everything to be glad about no matter

what ‘twas…you see when you’re hunting for the good things, you sort of forget the

other kind.”

So be glad…we have a brand new year ahead of us. Use the past as a lesson and guide for the future. We all have unknown strength to face our difficulties, but we can all use a pat on the back, a kind word of encouragement and a few very good friends to bring us love and support. Happy New Year!

Kris Hansen led us in the Flag Salute.

Jeff Hata gave our Inspirational Message.

Guests today were Karen Campbell and Kevin Daly.

President Harriet thanked Laura Shannon for greeting and Todd Juvonen for taking attendance.

Our raffle prize today was donated by Jeff Hata, a bottle of Labyrinth Tempranillo and a bottle Eberle Sauvignon Gris.

John Borneman gave our Joke of the Day and then led us in our song.

Joe Strohman reported that our Club Foundation is up to $2.7 million. We need to elect 2 directors to the Foundation Board for a 2 year term beginning July 1, 2018. If you are interested, please let Joe know.

Joe also reported that Diana Davis who helped us with our Veteran's program will be here next week and the 4 Way Test Essay contest has begun. Carolyn Hertel will be donating $1,000 for awards again this year.

Amber Stevens reported that our Community Service meeting will be after our meeting next week.

Margarida Eidson let us know that there is free sand and sand bags available at the Poinsettia Pavilion for anyone that may need them.

President Harriet let us know that the Friends of the Library will need help on January 18th to load books to move to the Hill St library.

Midge Stork conducted the raffle and our lucky winner was Tom Swan, who had to leave early, so the wine was awarded to Bruce & Kathy McGee who lost their wine collection to the fires.
