Our speaker this morning was Robert Williamson from the Hamilton Mountain Heritage Society. Bob was featured in a Hamilton Spectator article 3 years ago: https://www.thespec.com/news-story/6555753-the-battle-of-stoney-creek-reconsidered-history-buff-says-the-old-story-needs-a-refresher/. The theme of Bob’s talk was errors and misinformation in some of our local history. For example, Battlefield Househad not even been built during the war of 1812. The Battle of Stoney Creekwas fought on June 6, 1813.
Other examples of errors or just misinformation that Bob cited were: the story of “scout” Billy Green, the naval battle of Burlington Heights, the location of the Ancaster mill, the Gore park fountain (Gore Park had been dressed up for the visit of Queen Victoria’s son – the Prince of Wales) and the story of George Summers(comedian, actor and theatrical manager in the early 20thcentury).
