Local third grade students receive new dictionaries!

The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise distributed more than 535 dictionaries to local third grade students in the Santa Barbara and Hope School Districts. Participating schools include: Adams, Franklin, Harding, Hope, Monroe, Monte Vista, Peabody Charter, Roosevelt, Vieja Valley and Washington Schools.

Because third grade is when learning to use a dictionary is part of the standard curriculum, teachers love having every student owning the same dictionary making the lessons consistent. A physical dictionary continues to be preferred to an Internet search.

This program began in 2008 with then Rotary President Dennis Johns. The club board decided in lieu of giving gifts to the weekly speakers to use those funds to help purchase dictionaries. Each speaker who visits Rotary has their name in 30 dictionaries provided to local third graders. To date, we have distributed more than 10,000 dictionaries to the local schools. This project has been well received by the students and teachers.

Dennis continues to lead this club project and funding is provided by the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Charitable Foundation.
