Oscar Zavala and Tom Heath honored by President Liz for leading impactful service projects
Congratulations to our October Rotarian of the Month Tom Heath and our November Rotarian of the Month Oscar Zavala!
Both Tom and Oscar recently led significant service projects for our club, and they demonstrate there's more than one way to have a meaningful impact.
Tom, a 33-year member of our club, led our Camp Whittier Work Day, identifying projects to make the youth camp more beautiful and functional, securing the resources to fund materials, and coordinating volunteers to tackle the tasks in one day. With Camp Whittier--as "well" as our water and health projects in Nicaragua--Tom is one of our leaders who helps maintain ongoing relationships with service partners. We build, sometimes literally, on past successes and can see our contributions over time. Tom personally gives generously to this project, including sharing his wisdom and experience as a general contractor.
While Tom was honored for a local project with a 28-year history, Oscar was recognized for activating Rotarians for a new project benefiting families on the other side of the world. Oscar, a 6-year member of our club, proposed that the eight local Rotary clubs join together to fund and staff a meal-packing event with Rise Against Hunger. He took it from idea to implementation on November 1, rallying 90 volunteers to assemble 15,336 meals. Oscar's infectious enthusiasm and tireless coordination produced one of the most memorable and meaningful events of our year.
Tom and Oscar, thank you for the time, talent, treasure, and heart that you bring to our club!
Liz Alves
