Health education classes taking place at the Nueva Vida Clinic.
The poor of Nicaragua, without the financial resources to provide for a healthy diet and without access to needed stress reducers, suffer from the serious illnesses of Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. This project will provide necessary medications to treat diabetes and high blood pressure at the Nueva Vida Clinic. The clinic currently has 140 patients, both male and female, participating in the chronic care program that provides check-ups, lab work, medication and health education. The 140 participants are divided up into small groups and attend monthly health education classes learning about diet, exercise, taking medications properly, hand-washing, other COVID prevention, and giving each other support. The classes are held in the health education classroom at the Nueva Vida Clinic. The health education classroom was funded in 2019-20 and the medications and classes this year, both through the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Charitable Foundation and Rotary District 5240 Grants.
