Gil Garcia presented a Ukrainian trading flag to the Club, it was given to him at the Rotary International conference in Calgary, Canada by a Rotary Club Ukrainian that now resides in Ottawa, Canada. She participated in the Santa Barbara Open World Program eight years ago and visited our Club, having warm memories of Rotary she joined one.
President Liz Alves from the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise announced the annual Dolphin Derby Festival scheduled for Sunday, July 13 at Chase Palm Park. Encouraging Rotarians to adopt a dolphin for $10.

Tim Hardy, incoming President-Elect and finishing his 14th year as Treasurer gave our club a quick recap of the new dues structure. Our first quarter billing for Rotary year 2025-2026 will include lunches from the fourth quarter-Rotary year 2025-2026 plus Mega Bucks. The dues are “All Inclusive,” meaning your meals will be included in the $100/per month dues or $300/per quarter. The only added amounts will be the $50 Holiday Fundraiser and $25/per quarter Mega Buck. If you are unable to attend a meeting, send a family member or friend, their meal will be paid for.

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE

TIM VOM STEEG, UCSB SOCCER
Tim Vom Steeg is starting his 26th season as the head coach of the UCSB men’s soccer as the winningest soccer coach in UCSB history with 317 Division I wins. He is a 5-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year and a 2-time National Coach of the Year. In 2008 he was inducted into the Junior College Soccer Hall of Fame. In 2014 he was inducted into the UCSB Hall of Fame.Tim attended UCSB and was a 4-year starter for Gaucho soccer. After college, he played two years in the American Professional Soccer League.
Tim began his coaching career at Laguna Blanca and San Marcos High School. Then in 1992, Tim helped launch the men’s and women’s soccer program at Santa Barbara City College. During his seven years as SBCC head coach, he dominated with a 120-18-7 record and won the California
Junior College State Championship in 1996.
He then took over a 2-17-1 UCSB soccer program. Just three years later, the team qualified for their Erst NCAA tournament,
since then, they have made 15 NCAA appearances, being National Finalists in 2004, and winning NCAA Division I
National Championship in 2006.
Tim met his wife Almeria at UCSB. They
have four boys - Justin, Carson, Jared, and Caden - all of whom played for him
at UCSB. Justin and Carson continued to play profession soccer in the MLS and USL. Jared and Caden graduated from UCSB this past June.
Tim started off by saying he could talk about soccer:globally, local and community. But he was going to talk mostly about money in soccer. This sport is the number two sport played by kids in the United States, over 3 million, the first is basketball. An interesting fact is that colleges can now pay their student-athletes directly, a result of the House v. NCAA settlement passed June 2025.The settlement enables schools to share revenue with athletes, with an annual cap initially set at $20.5 million per school. An important note, not all schools are required to participate in revenue sharing. UCSB first-year Manu Duah was recently selected number 1 overall pick in Major League Soccer SuperDraft, by the expansion club San Diego FC. Last year tickets for the Wrexham AFC v. AFC Bournemouth at UCSB Harder Stadium sold out in 2-days at a minimum cost of $75/each.
I found Coach Vom Steeg’s talk very enlightening, especially as a women and person knowing nothing about soccer.
