Cathy Murillo, Candidate for Mayor and Current City Councilwoman
The program speaker this week was Cathy Murillo, Candidate for Mayor and Current City Councilwoman.
Before being a councilmember, Cathy was the UCSB News and Publication Director and was, also, a Los Angeles Times Reporter before that. Many Santa Barbara Residents have already voted in this mail-in ballot format, but phone calling and door knocking may still be appropriate to get out the vote. Cathy would like her campaign to be about responsive and energetic leadership.
Cathy’s main issues, if elected, will be job creation and State Street Store Vacancy Recovery and Homelessness. She would also like to stress Public Health initiatives, the character of our neighborhoods and have a Housing focusing on the State Street to Chapala and State Street to Anacapa areas downtown.
She talked about the closure of State Street to car traffic, but the business owners do not want that. She wants to see the permitting process for new businesses on State Street to be accelerated so we get businesses in the vacant storefronts, easier. Police Chief Lori Ludnow has been encouraged to over hire so we have police available for all the current positions.
To address homelessness, officers have been trained in a Restorative Role with a specialty in police work and social work. She wants to see us support Measure C which is the additional 1 percent increase in Sales Tax Rate. The Police Chief is working on a new Use of Force Policy. Cathy is the Vice Chair of the Homeless Association, C3H. The United Way will have a big part in bringing services to the homeless.
She would like to continue to be involved with Water Issues. She is supported as a candidate by the Democratic Party and the Sierra Club. Beach Habitat, Neighborhoods for Housing and Large Employers asking for more affordable housing possibilities are also very important issues that need to be addressed. She has been campaigning since January 1, 2017.
Club members asked about high density housing, the fact that the City of Santa Barbara supports County Libraries to the tune of $300,000 to $600,000 each year and the question was, “should that be a Santa Barbara expense for Goleta, Carpinteria, Buellton and other county libraries.
She is against Santa Barbara being called a Sanctuary City and does not want to lose the Federal Funding in many areas. She would support an Annual Audit of how the Measure C, Sales Tax Revenue is spent. She was questioned about her initial non-support of the Bicycle Transportation Plan. She has been a strong supporter of a Balance Budget and Building Reserves.
Mayoral Candidate, Cathy Murillo has had many initiatives related to youth in our community while on the Council, also.

Winner of the Marble Drawing was Donna Eyman

Winner of the Fruit Basket was President Ken Oplinger

President Ken ended this Rotary Meeting at 1:30 PM.
